Chris smiled as Jason said he wasn’t crazy and he was happy Jason didn’t think he was crazy. He watched Jason slowly walk away as he stood next to Alex. But Chris couldn’t get it out of his system why Jason didn’t want them to follow.
“Hey Alex, I know it’s wrong but don’t you think we should follow him?” Chris asked softly. “We are friends, we should keep each other safe, share things, you know?” he added. Then his eyes got that worried look in them. “His tone was so weird, what if there is someone in his cabin, you know someone that is sort of keeping him hostage?” Chris said slowly panicking. “I think we should find out.” He added as he looked at Alex.
Alex really wasn't sure what to think. She pulled her brothers jacket tighter on her chest and lowered her hands to her sides. She reached and placed one hand on the handle of her bone collector and began to tap the barrel with one of her fingers. "I do think he is hiding something but i think we all are in this world. We all have a dark past now. There isn't that single person that is dark and brooding because of a mysterious past where they did something terrible.. No. We've all done the terrible things that most of us never thought ourselves capable of. We have fired an endless amount of bullets into walking corpses. We've stolen things, we've hurt people whether we meant to or not. I think that gives us the right to have a secret or two." She cleared her throat a little. "That being said.. We should probably follow him." She didn't really want to be following one of the only two other humans she knew existed right now. She knew they had a group but she hadn't seen them with her own eyes so that didn't matter as much right now.
"Maybe he just wants to be alone for a while though. So we can follow him. I'll go where ever you go because im not sleeping alone tonight. Not now that i finally know there is someone else." She looked to chris and took a deep breath. Truth be told she just wanted to collapse and fall asleep but she would see this through first. Whatever was going to happen would unfold before she gave shutting her eyes a try.
It was hard for Jason to just leave the other two people he trusted dearly, almost lying to them at one point. He didn’t want to lie to them. He just wanted to get them away so they wouldn’t have to witness how much of a mess he truly was. This almost hurt as bad as going back there every night and crying his eyes out. Almost, though. Nothing hurt worse than solitude. Jason knew that first hand. Being on his own for two full years with very minimal human contact took it’s toll. He became accustomed to handling everything on his own. Never once since his parents died did he think he’d ever have to rely on someone else to live. Oddly enough, that’s the one thing his parents always warned him about. His grandparents, too. Despite his horrific past, his family DID care about him. Right now, they’d probably be shaking their heads because of how foolish he was acting.
Jason trudged down the street, making sure to keep himself in the shadows of the palm trees, holding the strap to his backpack tightly against his shoulder. Gripped in his right hand was his trench knife. A knife his father had, and his father before him. It was sort of just a ‘family heirloom’ type of object. Never in a million years did Jason think he’d be using it to.. kill people. No, not people. Things. Kill THINGS. That’s not what it was meant for. It was a gift passed down to him with the intention of love and care. Not death. Either way, it was one of the only melee weapons he had when it all broke down. He figured if he was going down, he’s gonna go down using this to kill as many of the Dead-Heads as possible.
It wasn’t long before he reached the edge of town, cutting through a small path on the outskirt of the jungle. This was the path that lead to the cabin he’s been staying at for the past two years. It was fairly nice. Two floors, a basement, even a balcony. He tried his best to keep it nice and clean, and for the most part, he did. Everything except the vegetation. He just couldn’t handle it all by himself. He had to worry more about his survival than chopping down vines and leaves every week or so.
Fortunately, Walkers didn’t wander this far. If they did, it was only a measly one or two, which Jason could patently handle. The cabin was just how he left it. His 1980 red Dodge Ram sitting idly next to the establishment. This was home. When he arrived on the front porch, he quickly scoped the surrounding brush before entering. When the door shut, he released a huge breath. It felt so good to be back home. This cabin, despite the memories within, made him feel safe. Sometimes, it even made him forget about the outside world.
Jason lowered his pack to the floor with a gentle touch, approaching the void fireplace. He reached into his pants pocket, pulling out a small, folded piece of paper. Tears filled his eyes as he began to unfold what was now apparently a picture. A picture of his family (adoptive), The Rikkert’s, on the day of the outbreak. It was the one and only picture he had of the entire family together. He placed the picture on the top of the fireplace so that it was propped up, facing him. With a very soft whimper, Jason fell to his knees, his shoulders bobbing up and down as he sobbed. Tears streamed down his rosy cheeks like rivers of sorrow, splashing on the wooden floorboards below. “I-.. I’m sorry..”

Chris listened as Alexandria spoke. She told him that she also noticed he was hiding something, followed by a speech how all the people in this sick World did things that weren’t all that good. For a brief moment Chris thought she wouldn’t agree on following him. But mere seconds later she said it they should follow him. Chris smiled, he hoped they would find out what was Jason was hiding, he hoped they could help him with whatever was going on.
He smiled as she said, she would go wherever he went since she didn’t want to sleep alone. “Alright, and no worries I’ll keep you safe.” Chris said with a wink. Like he said earlier he cared for her, both Alexandria and Jason seemed so fragile, but yet had a hard shell and he could relate, since that was exactly how he was. “Ok we should hurry, he is nearly out of sight, move like the wind, softly but quick.” Chris said to her. “Wow that sounded a bit like Master Yoda.” Chris said jokingly. Then he started to walk, slowly and carefully following Jason.
Jason made sure to keep himself in the shadow, which was good cause the sun was damn hot, but because he kept himself in the shadow, Chris and Alex could do the same. “You alright?” Chris asked as he looked at Alex. “Just making sure you can keep up, you look a bit tired.” He said friendly while slowly continuing to follow Jason. Chris himself was tired too, but he wouldn’t sleep if he wasn’t sure Jason was ok. Chris wasn’t noisy, but he lost too much in the past and he wanted to do thing different now. “Sorry if I don’t talk a lot now, just don’t want to make too much noise.” Chris added.
After awhile they reached the end of town and followed a path into the jungle. Chris saw Jason enter a beautiful cabin, it looked so peacefully and clean. He figured the walkers didn’t find this place yet. Hell if they hadn’t followed Jason, they would never found this, it was pretty well hidden. “Come on.” Chris softly whispered as he sneaked to the window of the cabin, while he was down there he grabbed his gun, Chris was ready to help Jason when needed, if he was being held hostage, it would come to an end now. But when he peeked inside his heart sort of broke, he saw Jason on his knees crying while watching at something, he looked closer and it was a picture. It was as if Chris felt his pain too, he knew god damn well what it felt like to lose loved ones. He softly got up and walked to the door. “He needs us.” He softly said as he looked at Alex with sadness in his eyes. Chris quietly opened the door, he did it very soft, he didn’t want to scare Jason.
Once inside he walked closer to Jason and placed his hand on Jason his shoulder. “Don’t freak, it’s just me.” Chris spoke softly. “Sorry Alex and I thought something was wrong with your tone, we followed you and wanted to make sure you were ok, don't be angry.” Chris spoke softly. “But this is one of those moments you need friends, we all have pain and you shouldn’t go through this alone.” He added. “We are here for you.” He said slowly crouched next to Jason, keeping his hand on Jason his shoulder.
Playing this little following game only made her all the more tired but she tried her best to remain aware and quiet as the wind the whole way there. She just gave a small nod or two to Chris and followed closely behind him. At one point she reached from her gun to her jacket. She grabbed the zipper on the leather jacket and began to play with it as she walked. All she could do was hope that there wasn't something to terribly wrong with Jason. She didn't want to be the girl that had just met two people and one of them captured and skinned bodies, or collected heads. She really hoped that these guys would turn out to be pretty normal considering their situation.
When Jason finally got where he was going and went inside. They were not far behind. Alex stayed back and let Chris have a look. She heard him say that Jason needed them so she watched Chris as he went inside to Jason. Alex took a few steps forward. She looked around a bit to make sure there was nothing else that they needed to know about. It actually seemed like it was a nice place. "I learned a long time ago that pain isn't meant to be dealt with alone. That's what friends and family are for. Or in this case people you barely know because it's all we've got." She brought her eyes back to Jason and Chris. She finally came all the way up to them and brought her eyes over to Jason.
"We are alive in a time where we have to stick together no matter what we do. We aren't gonna judge you, man. I highly doubt you could do anything at all that would surprise me or shock me after what i've seen and you sure as hell don't have to hide tears. Everyone cries now. We use to live in a dangerous world but now we live in a time and place where each second could be our last. We don't wake up and worry about jobs and bills anymore. We wake up and survivor. That's it. So cry if you want. Cry about what you lost, what you miss.. Cry about what you want.. You won't find either of us saying anything about it." Alex knelt down and then went to a seated position. She leaned back against the wall and continued to play with the zipper on the jacket she was wearing.
Completely distraught, Jason didn’t even flinch when he heard the door open. For all he knew, that could’ve been a Dead-Head waltzing right into rip him to shreds. At that point in time, he didn’t care anymore. He just wanted things to be over with. Life had been so shitty for the past two years. There was not one morning he woke up happy. There was nothing to be happy about. Waking up every morning to an empty bed. An empty bed. An empty world. At least, up until now it had been an empty world. Waking up and surviving. That’s all life was about, and it sucked. Of course, things like bills and grocery shopping you didn’t have to worry about. But at least doing bills you couldn’t die. You couldn’t have your flesh torn apart. You didn’t risk turning into a.. monster.
He had stopped sobbing as Chris rested beside him. Although both of them had some very meaningful words, and if Jason wasn’t in such a horrible state of mind, he would have greatly appreciated it. That right there was a point towards him being able to call them his family. Family wasn’t a word he threw around easily, and it wasn’t a word he liked to use. “I didn’t.. want to kill them.” His hands balled themselves into fists. The only word to describe him right now was upset. Anger, depression, regret, all of those feelings ran through his mind. He missed his family. He hated himself for not being able to save them. He hated that he had to have been left in the world alone for the past two years.
“I had to.. They asked me to.. I didn’t want to kill them. I just.. There was nothing I could do.. I miss them so much..” Jason couldn’t control his mouth. Words upon words just kept pouring out. “I tried so many times to forget it.. I.. I tried to end it all. I put the gun in my mouth.. but I couldn’t pull the trigger. I was so scared.. I just wanted it to be all over…” His entire body shook, and suddenly, he stopped sobbing. Tears slowly faded from his eyes. “I didn’t mean for this to happen.. I didn’t want to put a bullet through their head. But.. But.. I couldn’t let them turn. I-.. I never thought I’d have to kill my own parents…”

Chris was joined by Alexandria, who also told Jason he didn’t need to go through this alone. “She’s right Jason, like I said we are here for you.” Chris replied. He was still crouched next to him. Then Jason started talking. He spoke how he didn’t want to kill them, how he was sorry and how he wanted to end his own life. Chris felt his eyes getting watery, he normally wouldn’t be so emotional, but from what Jason said he knew Jason had to kill his own parents. When he told them that, he started to stop sobbing and his tears also stopped. But Chris still felt his tears coming up, he could relate since his brother also ordered him to leave him behind. By thinking of that and by seeing Jason so emotional his tears came rolling down.
Once more he placed his hand on Jason his shoulder. “I can relate to your pain, I really can, but we are here to support you, we’ll drag you through this.” Chris spoke as a tear ran down his face, but on the same time Chris tried to keep his voice from sounding sad. “This is not something you need to do on your own.” He added. “It’s good to talk about it, that’s part of the healing.” He said as he wiped off his tears.
