Cade hooked one end of his bow on the roof and flipped on to the ladder. From there he climbed down, his boots clunking on the steel frame. He reached the bottom with a thud, the dirt settling around him.
He kicked a small rock and it knocked into the building he was just upon. Spinning his bow around he tucked it on his back, the bow nestling in with his arrows. He whiped his gloved hands on his blue jeans and walked forward.
He could see Collete coming his way. Folding my his arms he smiled at her.
"So how did it go," he asked in a light tone, almost jokingly like. He knew how the two acted together. It was always an interesting experience when Collette and Ace were in the same are together.
He looked down at where the woman just came from. "So tell me about our new friends down there? You think they will be a problem?"
College returned to her truck parked down the alley and as she approached she saw Cade. He stood there smiling at her which caused her to chuckle," really? You asking how it went. That man makes my skin crawl, you know that and they way he flirts with me." She shivered visibly. She moved closer to him and pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
" yea, I think all hell is gonna break loose. He sent a spy in. Desi said some guy approached the new people as she was heading back, guarantee it was one of his now." She inhaled and exhaled," they are a large group, I told him he should leave it alone , let the chips fall where they will, but he won't. " she took a another drag from her smoke and looked at Cade,"it's gonna get messy, so, come on, what do you think we should do?" She knew he had an opinion or he would t have asked.
"Tell me why we just don't kill him again? He's a monster, I heard the screams coming from there. And what he does to the girls up on that third floor, makes my skin crawl," Cade said looking down at them and watching Collete light her smoke. "You saw the little girl with him right? What is she like ten or eleven? His home is no place for a little girl."
She talked about the people down there and asked his opinion. "What if we got to them first. Acer want's trouble, theese people could be allies, or neighbours at the least. Before Acer can get his wrinkly old mitts on them we should intervene. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, that kind stuff. If they are a big group there might be someone you like."
He looked at her, "I agree just let it ride out, by Acer won't let that happen. I say beating him to it is the only way. Mess with him and his savages a little."
Colette chuckled as she finished her smoke and listened to him," Cade, we can't survive a war with those animals, we don't have the numbers, believe me, I know about the girl and it drives me crazy. I don't think he does all the damage, it's his men, the ones he has in his service." She looked over at him and smirked," you know that's what I am going to do, I flat out told him to back off, or I would let them know all about him, the good and most definitely the bad." Colette leaned over and patted his arm," no worries, first thing tomorrow I am gonna drive down to the apartments and have a look see, maybe even sit down and chat with their leader, or leaders." She moved past him and tossed him the keys," you drive." She wanted to get back to the bar, before Acer decided she was a real threat.
"You think we don't even have the number with the help of those in the apartment," he asked as he stepped away from the truck, "seemed like a lot of bodies down there. Maybe we should have someone set up watch in the apartments across the street, so Acer doesn't act first." He smirked a bit, "I know how he loves to act, his whole leader charade. If he didn't offer savages what they wanted he would be dead, to bad he has to stoop to the level to get it."
Cade caught the keys and went around to the driver side door. "I actually heard he lost five men from one guy. Some lunatic he let in went crazy and started killing off Acer's men from the inside. They then gunned him down, but still this was one man taking out five, imagine what you or I could do." He climed in and dtarte the truck.
"I like the plan though, sit down and talk. Maybe offer something from the bar as a gift, some schnapps or maybe some of our food. Make us seem really good. I'm sure we have way more to offer than Acer, we should play to that." He waited for her to get in an pulled off, turning the truck back toward the bar. "It's all about timing right now."
Colette was listening , but she was thinking too." If he sent a spy in, I want to wait til daylight. Honestly, I would hold up and make sure that no one was getting in that place, and showing up in the middle of the night might put us off on the wrong foot." She glanced over at him," though. A peace offering is a good idea." She shifted and looked at him, " are you volunteering? You wanna go and smooth talk the ladies?"
She shook her head and sighed," you might be a smooth talker, love, but political negotiations may not be your strong suit• " Colette leaned over and kissed his cheek," but you can come with me." His words about them all working together would be big enough of a group to take out Acer," he's dangerous, more than you think." She ran a hand through her hair, she just wanted to get back and go to her room. She needed to think about all this. She knew this time would come sooner or later. The question was if she was ready for it.
"I was meaning more material supplies, something they'd actually want," Cade said smirking as he looked at her, "but if you want me to go smooth talk them, I certainly can." He felt listened to her comment and felt the kiss on his cheek. "You don't think I could woo all of them to be on our side. I think I could. I could persuade them."
He turned the coner onto the next street. "You're right I'll come with you. You can show me how it's done, if you don't think I can do it." He bit his lip and kept driving. "How many did you see out there, give me a rough number. So you know what to bring as an offering. I mean if they have twenty people a can of spinach won't cut it. I wasn't keeping court of the bodies going in and out."
Colette smirked at him as she rolled the window down a bit and lot another cigarette. She smoked more when she was on edge and this whole business made her worry. She glanced at him as she listened to him and saw him bite his lip," what is it?" She inhaled and exhaled and flicked ash out the window," you're holding back, so tell me what you're thinking, lip biter." She knew him better than most and knew what that little gesture meant." You go with me almost everywhere, you, I trust to have my back and I trust your judgement."
She flicked more ash," I was thinking of a basket , an assortment of things, not just a can, and maybe ten or so, we will know more when Desi gets back and reports."
"It's nothing. I was just stopping myself from saying something I would regret. A certain comment or two that didn't need to be said. Have to keep up my gentlemen appearance," Cade said looking at her, "it was nothing, I would have said it if it mattered."
He pulled in front of the bar. "A gift basket would be good, you majored in basket weaving in college right," he asked with a little smirk, teasing her. "Let's hope Desi finds sonething we can use. We still need to move fast." He stepped out, "can't let Acer get the upper hand."
Colette rolled the window up before he stopped. She got out and crushed the smoke on the sidewalk as she rounded the vehicle. She got right up in his face," never knew you to be a gentleman, love." She canted her head a bit," be careful Cade, don't piss me off." She smiled at him and rose up and nipped his bottom lip," remember , we are a family." She patted his chest and turned to go inside to find Desi.
She wasn't in the mood to joke and tease, and especially not for him to be cryptic. She found Desi in the bar office and sat down behind her desk."Alright, tell me what we know about the newcomers."
Collette said not to piss her off and he just smiled. "Now you know why I held my tongue." He flet her nip his lip. "I know we are family, and I apuld never insult family. Well besides mild teasing. See a gentlemen." He smirked and shut the door. "If I do tease you know I don't mean it right? I do that for everyone. Don't take it to heart."
Cade followed her in and leaned on the walls as sher talked to Desi. He wanted to know about them too, everything she learned. Strangers were always interesting, it could grow boring here with the same people everyday. "Are the Acer people, or are they us people. That's the main question Des."
Desiree sat across from Colette, she shook her head," honestly, not sure. They had company show up, some guy in a truck stopped cause the fallen tree there, they seemed to take him in. But it looks like the groups split or something. Most went in the same building, but this one couple went to the other building. You know the second building across from the one they went into. Don't know what's up with that. Saw that lights flickered for a minute so one of them must be handy and got the gennie on the roof working." She glanced at Cade," they seem to be friendly, maybe. I think we should check them out in the morning."
"So they are handy then, if they got the old generators running. Make a note we should drain some around, keep out gas up, the truck is a guzzler," Cade said to them both. "You get a rough idea on numbers. Or a rough size of how big the group is." He moved to the desk, sitting on a corner. He crossed his arms and looked at them.
"We should definetly reach them frist. Collete, what do you think?"
Desiree shrugged, " with the new guy, I'd say around 12 or so, largest group I've seen in a long time, traveling together." She shook her head," I wonder if some of them are related, like a group of families that ended up banding together or something." She looked at Colette waiting for her plan.
Colette sat quietly listening and then took a bottle out of her desk drawer. She poured a little into the glass sitting on her desk." Seems like we should make friends, warn them about Acers crew and see what all we can learn." She closed the bottle and put it away, then took a sip from the glass savoring it." I want the truck ready in the morning and a crew to get that tree outta the road, while Cade and I take a welcome basket to our new neighbors. Does that work for everyone?" She looked at each of them and waited for their thoughts.
"That it big," Cade said looking at Des, "how much do we have now, I keep loosing count." He paused, "what about Acer, seemed there's more savages each time I go by or meet my contact. They have to have more than twelve by now, his canon foldder guards alone meet that number. Hopefully this group is famalies, we might be able to play to that."
Collette spoke and he listened. When she was done he spoke. "Sounds like a plan. I'll get a saw ready and a few axes to move the tree. The truck will be ready to haul it away. Des and you can prepare the welcome basket. You will know more about peace offerings than I will. Though be careful about our stocks, we don't want to give to much away, just enough to feed twelve people."
Colette nodded at them," first light, I don't want to let Acer get a jump on is, these people need to be warned." She sighed and ran a hand through her hair," Desi, can you handle the basket, you are better at gifts than I am." She glanced at Cade," you go and get your end taken care of, I gonna go and check in with Angel, she took your place, right Des?" She lifted the glass and finished it then grabbed a gun from a rack behind her as she stood up," won't be long, just wanna know what we are walking into in the morning." The girls had set up on a nearby rooftop and had swapped out on watch duty.
"First light got it," Cade said looking at them both, "guess that means early to be tonight." He smiled and turned to leave. "I'll let you ladies be, the equipment will be ready. You wanting your truck to haul it away, or should I find something bigger." He waited for a reply and once it was answered left out the door.
He walked out in front of the bar and to one of the buildings they were using for storage. Once there he made his way to the weapons and picked off two fire axes from a shelf. He swung them around and set them aside. As he moved farther down the shelving units he found a chainsaw, pulling it out. It was stained red and the blade blemished.
Setting it on a table he checked the gas levels. It wasn't full, but would be enough to cut the tree along with the axes. Picking the axes back up in one hand, and the saw in the other he walked out to Collette's truck. He placed them in the back and kept moving. Going back in he grabbed a couple hand saws and a crowbar to get the tree apart. Movig further into the supplies he found some rope and a hook, which they'd need to haul the tree out of there.
Paulie set out to bring Leigh to Colette's place in hopes of getting her in place to figure out what the woman and her group were going to do with the new group that moved in a short ways away. They were going in the opposite direction of where the new group was, but it didn't matter. Acer wanted what he wanted and their best chance was going to be getting Leigh on the inside. As he walked with her, the sun was settling down and it was getting dark. The only thing that was lighting their path was the moon and he wanted to make sure she stuck close. If she was lost to walkers, he was as good as dead.
"Just a little ways. It's not far." He didn't really want to get to know her that well. He didn't really care. He just wanted to make sure she was alive when she showed up. About four blocks away, they would see torches lit outside the brick building which was the safe house where she needed to go. He saw a walker coming up towards them, slowly limping with a broken ankle. He pulled out a hunting knife and approached, downing it with one quick jab to the head as he motioned Leigh to hurry up.
"I'll follow you to the third block, then you're on your own. I'll wait in case she doesn't let you in. But talk your way in, kid. I don't want to bring you back to Acer."
Leigh had seen Paulie around Acer's, but they'd never really met before now. He seemed to be one of the more decent guys, he never even said anything that mean to Leigh. Maybe he just didn't care. Any attempt at conversation during their walk had been cut off quickly by his one-word answers and obvious lack of interest. That was fine, Leigh just wanted the walk to go faster. She recoiled as his knife made contact with the walker skull and the walker fell to the ground, but she said nothing.
She needed to talk her way in, and that usually wasn't too difficult. Most people would let a single child inside. Leigh hadn't brought any weapons this time. If she encountered trouble, she was done, unless Paulie decided to be a hero, but that seemed unlikely. "Get inside, you go back alone. Got it." Leigh was speaking in hushed tone in case any walkers were nearby.
After a long, deep inhale, Leigh began walking towards the large brick building. She'd done this many times, but this was different. She didn't want to disappoint Acer. She was afraid to. Before she knew it, she was at the door. She briefly looked back to try and find Paulie, but she saw nothing but darkness. Was he still there? It didn't matter. She shouldn't consider him a safety net. If they started firing, he'd run. Without further hesitation, she knocked on the door.

The guards radioed in about a kid approaching the building. Colette heard it from the radio in her office. She stood up and went towards the front of the bar. She knew Cade would be on his way too. All the main people had radios. She moved towards the front door of the bar, two guards were already there.
One female opened the door, while the second covered her with a gun." What do we do with a kid?" Asked the one with the gun. Colette approached carefully. A kid? One brow rose," let her in and check her for Bites and weapons." She stood watching, waiting.
