She heard Luca in her room, although he was at a distance. He was hesitant to come in and as much as she could appreciate that, she wondered why. Out of everyone, he was the one she had gotten the closest to, mentally and physically. She had revealed thing about herself and he seemed to know why she did the things she did, without question. She kept looking at the ring as she slipped it on her middle finger while talking to him.
"My mamma gave it to me. It has an elephant on it. For good luck."
She finally tore her gaze away from the ring and looked over to him. "Maybe things will change now. "
But she remembered something in her room, something she wanted to find without hesitation. Beside her bed was a wooden nightstand with a faux tiffany lamp on top. Out of habit, she tried the little pullstring although nothing happened. There were a few candles on top they could use when the sun went down, but what she was looking for was in a drawer. When the drawer slid open, she found what she was looking for. The album was a little dusty, but since it was kept in the drawer, it was still in pretty good shape. She pulled it out and sat on the bed, looking at Luca as she opened it up. There was a small bump felt between the pages as she opened the cover.
"This is who I was."
If Luca wanted to come take a look at the pictures, she certainly wouldn't deny him a seat on the bed. She was doing this to open up a little more. He was already in her house and she figured he may as well gain insight about the life she once lived. The first set of pictures were pretty standard. PIctures of her as a kid, vacationing with the family, different fashions at different times, some holiday pictures. But when she turned a few pages in, there was a chain and two rings attached. On these pages were pictures of her with groups of people and several in particular with a dark haired girl. They had their hair and makeup done, dresses on and big smiles to make the rounds. She picked up the chain that had two golden wedding rings on it. She couldn't help but laugh as the memory of those rings came back to her. Her fingers gently touched against the picture of the dark haired girl as she recalled her friendship.
"That's Lily. That's the one Adolphus killed in cold blood. Me and her were best friends."
She could feel Luca's eyes on the rings already judging what the hell it was about. It would definitely call for an explanation.
"See this picture here? We were drunk as hell." She pointed to the picture of the both of them with large glasses filled with a reddish drink. They were both sipping out of straws and grinning ear to ear.
"We both took off early from work and started at happy hour. I remember, although barely, getting smashed and we both decided to head over to a jewelry store. We got in there and decided to buy these wedding rings. The poor clerk, she was probably as old as dirt, thought were we lesbians getting married on the fly. Now, weird shit happens in New Orleans all the time, so I don't know why she was being so judgemental, although I bet the surveillance video showed us acting like idiots."
She shook her head and laughed as she set the rings on the edge of the bed.
"So, we made this promise to each other. If we didn't get married by the time we was thirty, we would start wearing these rings and pretending like we were. Lily, she was going to meet a world renowned cardiologist surgeon who saved the lives of countless people by doing the most intricate surgeries known to man. She was a nurse at the hospital and that's where they would have met. He was going to build her a big mansion and they were going to have five kids. Hell, she even worked it out that when he died, she would convert the house into an old folks home and take care of people."
She paused for a second as she reached out for the rings, wrapping her fingers around them as she spoke about herself.
"Me? I was gonna marry a photographer. One of them National Geographic ones that traveled the world and went to exotic places. I would go with him. Fiji, Austria, Sweden, New York, Bejing, Brazil....everywhere. Then, when we were old and retired, we were gonna settle in Mexico and live out our days on a Mexican beach. Grow old together."
She paused for a long, quiet moment as she let go of the rings. They slipped off the comforter and fell on the floor as she closed the photo album.
"We were drunk hopeless romantics that night."
She looked up at Luca finally. There was sadness in her gaze, but also a sense of satisfaction as she remembered her friend. He probably didn't give two craps about these pictures and had no idea who these people were, so there was nothing for him to eulogize.
"What about you? You ever find someone you wanted to marry?"
