Lola gave a nod in gratitude for the woman's kind words. Alive, it was such a conundrum. The concept of keeping it and not letting someone take life away from you. It was always a riddle for Lola, especially she she always struggled with the concept of life and death. But her thoughts quickly left her as the car stopped and Victoria hopped out of the car. Lola did the same, quietly and quickly. She moved to the back seat and rummaged through her bags. Yes the pain was still there, but it was subsiding only a little. The meds were working quicker than anticipated, mostly because there was nothing in her stomach.
With an axe in each hand, the younger woman hopped out of the car and tried to move her arms a little. Pain shot up through her chest, but she didn't let it show. Being brave was always something her brother taught her. Lola gave another nod, allowing the woman to feel at ease. If anything, Lola wouldn't mind being a sacrifice for these two. They were do-gooders and deserved to continue on with their quest for life.
"I'll bring up the rear, we'll put the little on in the middle?" Lola said as she threw an axe in the dirt. Throwing didn't hurt too much, but then again it wasn't into a skull only half decomposed. "I'll do what I need to do to keep everyone safe, don't you worry about that." And she meant it. She decided to follow Victoria's lead and walk backwards, only to keep a sharp eye out for any rustlers or stragglers lurking about. The axes were perfect because they were silent and very deadly, and over the year or so Lola became very proficient in using the silver and black duo.
She personally didn't like bringing Vanessa with her on these runs, but the last time she had left Vanessa alone in the car, she almost lost her daughter and with another helping hand made things alittle bit more easier and safer. That sounds good. She said, placing the shot gun over her should and grabbed the book bag.
She merely nodded to Lola's promise to keep them safe before heading down the road. Once they made it to the town, she took cover behind the first building and looked around, she saw only a couple of walkers and they didn't seem to have picked up on the scent of three people nearby. She looked back to Lola, holding up two fingers as a signal that there were two walkers that she could see.
She took out her brass knuckle knife and motioned for them to stay put as she left her cover and simply walked up behind the first walker, stabbing it in the head. The second turned around, growling at her as it stumbled its way over to its potential meal. After finishing the second one off, she motioned for the two to come out.
Lola moved swiftly behind the two and made sure to keep an eye on the little one while mom took care of business. Carefully and quietly, she placed her hand on the little girl and guided her forward. "Just stay with me for a little bit so we can make sure it's safe." Not that Lola didn't trust Victoria's judgement but it was always better to be safer than sorry. As they made their way around the back of the store, Vanessa clung onto her mom tightly. A few moans and knocks were coming from behind the metal back door.
"I'll check through a window, stay here." Lola said. She was quick and the most quiet. Plus it would allow Vanessa to feel safe with her mother. Even though Lola only knew very little about the twosome and didn't really care for them all that much, she didn't want to keep them separated.
Her head poked around the corner, as she kept her back to the white cement brick wall. It seemed like a general store of some sort. Lola always found stores down south so interesting, mainly because these "general" stores sold such random items. Food to weapons to car parts. Almost everything. She stopped suddenly when a few branches stirred across the way. Ducking down slowly, not making very fast movements, Lola kept crouched but making her way towards the window.
Finally she reached the window and peered into the cleanest pane. She didn't notice any walkers lurking about but the moans didn't get louder. But Lola did notice an echo. Which meant two things, small amount of walkers in a relatively empty space. Two things she considered to be positive. When she turned around the rustling in the branches ended up being a, what looked like pretty old and decomposed, walker. He wobbled slowly towards Lola, not able to make too much noise without a jaw.
She tightened her grip on each axe. Unsure how things were going to pan out with her current condition. With her back against the wall, Lola took a small step forward and hurled the first axe towards the jawless walker. Miss. With a deep breath, as deep as she could, and one more step the other axe flew through the air. Due to the fact that the walker was significantly closer, her axe tore right through his soft skull. "God damn." Pain shot through her side as she gathered her weapons and leaned against the closest tree, taking a moment to breath.
Vanessa practically clung to her mother when it was finally clear to come out. She didn't hear any walkers that were roaming the streets so that was good. She did hear a slight echo coming from one of the stores and wondered where Lola was at. Maybe the woman ran off? She wasn't going to chase after her if that was the case but heard what sounded like a walker being taken down.
She headed over to where she heard the sound coming from and saw Lola had taken down a walker with her back against a tree. Sounds like their are walkers inside the store. She said, peering inside but didn't see any movement in the store. They could be stuck in a backroom. She added, looking back to Lola.
He didn't get you did he? She asked curiously. She didn't see any bite marks on Lola and it could just be her ribs acting up.
"Nah, I'm clean." She said pushing herself off the tree, trying to not look so weak. "So what's the plan? We head inside, divide and conquer?" Lola knew that she wasn't in the best condition, and so did the doctor. It was just a matter of time before she would seriously need to sit down and rest. But for now she had some kind of strength to keep going, adrenaline or whatever it was. Running would probably end up being the last thing she did before passing out completely. Might as well save all her strength for that, just in case they needed to run.
She started to walk towards the front end of the store, keeping close to the building for cover and a reference point. "Go up ahead. I'll protect her back here." Allowing the doctor to go in front of her, Lola looked down the street once more, keeping an eye out for pesky walkers. Trying to keep absolutely quiet was key, no need to alert a horde with such a small group. Especially when that group was a woman, a little girl and an at half health twenty-something.
Once they got to the next intersection, Lola waited for Victoria's direction. It was too risky the run wouldn't probably be worth it. But if Lola was a full health, she'd be in and out of the store with no questions asked. Fucking animals. She thought about the group of men who jumped her and put her in the position she was in right now. It was people like that who made Lola beg for walkers instead of survivors. At least walkers she can deal with in a pinch, survivors were a whole different story.
