Thad shut the door to the old, red, pickup truck. He was around back of the cathedral, the stone walked fence keeping out the outside. He could see the barrel of Riley's sniper up above him in the watch tower, there only safety right now.
The back of the cathedral had a shed, where they now stored weapons of all kinds, from melee to guns. Thad and Garret required everyone carry a melee and pistol on them at all time, it kept them safe that way. The shed was inside a stoned fence area, big enough to park two cars and hold some supplies. A solid iron gate was the access in and out.
He admitted this wouldn't be his first choose of shelter, but he had to keep these people safe. They made the call, they had to reacue them. Thad hadn't even learned all there named. Most were young kids, college to highschool seniors. There was an older nurse, and a farmer wife. He also made note of the technition, pretty sure his name was Dane. Then there was Carter, the priest who let them all in. He kept to himself mostly, the priest, in his study. Thad rarely saw him, often wondered what he was up to.
Thad opened the back door to the cathedral and stepped in. Cory was off to the side, talking up Sadie. The other car wasn't back yet, that meant Garret and two others hadn't returned. They would have to be back soon, their supply route wasn't far.
Thad and the other officers, Garret and Riley had secured the cathedral. They armed the members, kept them fed and safe. No one was to leave besides those on a run. They were running low on supplies, the large city starting to become picked clean. It was now almost to dangerous to leave the walls, they suffered risks each time. But they had to keep scavenging, at least until Amber sent help.
He walked up to the big board in the main room. The cathedral had two rooms, an office, the main room, and the hallway which led to the ladder up the tower. The main room had mostly been cleared, where once date pyres now sat tables set up for food, tables for guns and supplies, and sleeping bags on the ground. It wasn't the best, and Carter was angry when they started taring it up, but at least it functioned. The pyres were now being used for a barrier at the front door, sharpened to stop the dead.
Thad studied the board, each person's name was written on it, beside that a task of what they would be doing that day. Once completed they could check it off and were free to do as they wish, or help others. It was usually the same, changing for the odd run or odd job they needed that week. He spotted Memphis, the bike courier's, name, it had beside it fix vehicles. He would be working with Dane, repairing what they could on the truck.
Thad walked to find the pair. He found them by the tools, gathering what they needed to fix anything broken with the truck. "Wheel is getting flat, the patch job is fading," he said to them, "I don't know if we have more patches, may need a new tire." The pair nodded and Thad turned to walk off, towards where a few of the members were to be watching the front.
