It was funny, initially the group left Kansas in the hopes to find any kind of shelter in the outside world, and here she was coming back with no place to go. A home that was ruined by the presence of walkers everywhere, but it was still her home. Her thought process was that if the group got separated they would want to meet up somewhere familiar. What was more familiar than home? June could only hope the theory would hold up. If she had any hope left when all was said and done.
June walked through a cornfield, not the best place to be out in the open as you never knew when something might pop out at you. The brunette came out of the cornfield and saw an old, beaten down farm up ahead. Maybe there was something she could use inside, or at least a means of shelter. There was a fence around the place. That was always helpful. June jumped the fence and hoped that if anyone was still here she wouldn't get shot on sight. So far, there appeared to be no one.
June walked up to the front door and knocked on it. Some habit died hard even in the apocalypse. She looked through the window trying to tell if anyone was inside, but it was too dark to see. June tried the doorknob and to her surprise it was unlocked. She entered the farm house and crossed the threshold, closing the door behind her and locking it this time just to be on the safe side. Last thing she needed was a walker coming through. June didn't expect anyone to be here if the front door was still unlocked.
The house was empty for the most part, some dry blood on the carpet and furniture was knocked over. June went into the kitchen to see if the water worked, and as one would expect, nothing. The next place she checked was the fridge and the cabinets. Still nothing. June's stomach growled. She couldn't remember the last time she had anything to eat. June exit through the back door and went over to a red barn sitting across from the house. She opened up the barn's doors to find the stables and blocks of hay. Her eyes looked up to see a mountain of it on the shelf above where a ladder was needed to reach it. The smell of horse crap flared up her nostrils as she looked through the stables. In her search she found a rake and picked it up.
“Can I eat it?”
June had a feeling it would be pretty stale and crunchy. Wait, she was debating eating a rake.
“I must be really hungry.”
Just then, June heard a noise coming from outside. Her heart skipped a beat, and she slowly went over to the barn doors, opening them just a little bit to peek outside. What she saw on the other side was...
