Annette was catching her breath as she looked back at Blade. Jesus it was hot as hell on the rooftop. With her adrenaline running high and her heart pounding in her chest she took her chances and climbed down to the balcony and moved towards the railing. It was a precarious balance that she knew could either result in death or success.
"Okay then old man, just a few more rooftops."
She could jump down to the top of the next building since it was a full floor shorter. It was convenient and flat, covered with river rock. When she jumped down, her feet landed hard against the roof, forcing her knees to buckle. The thump was hard and she rolled to her side wincing from the pain of the impact on her knees. She knew that sound would probably catch the attention of walkers below and when the pain subsided, she crawled on hands and knees towards the front edge of the building. She looked down and saw several walkers turning towards the sound which meant if they saw Blade jump across, they would swarm this building also. She motioned for him to hold off while she pulled out her gun.
With a sigh, wasting more bullets, she shot off the last two she had towards the building across the street and one block down. The shattering glass was the needed distraction. Walkers started to swarm towards the sound of the windows that were breaking apart, giving Blade the opportunity he needed to get across.
She whispered, although she wasn't even sure he would hear. "We need to hurry." She hoped the hardware store still had a supply of ammo and that it hadn't already been picked dry.
