"Pretty eyes? You think I'm pretty? Like a princess?" He grinned as he continued to verbally poke her like this, watching as her face turned as red as a lobster. She was getting more and more worked up as she went back into the office, sitting down on the couch and pouting.
He followed her in there and wrapped an arm around her shoulders as he came in really close.
"Oh come on now. I don't think you're a slut. I don't know shit about you. Even if you were, I wouldn't care. You shouldn't worry what other people think about you. You're still alive and that's all that matters."
Dicey felt him sit down beside her and when he wrapped his arm around her, she stiffened. He spoke kinda nice, but as her head turned towards him, her eyes just stared at him," you're right, you don't know me, so what makes you think you can touch me?" Her face was so close to his he could feel her breath as she spoke. She raised a brow," where I come from, a boy needs to get permission before he touches you." Her voice was low, soft so she didn't wake up Lydia.
" I wasn't trying to see you, I just went to investigate the noise I heard. God, your dick is the last thing on my mind." She smirked at him and eased away a little bit from him. " still your watch, can I have my bed back?" She smiled at him, as she asked that.
Phillip slowly pulled his arm back and shook his head, laughing a bit. He got up off the couch as she railed him for touching her. She seemed to hold on to many things from her past which, in his opinion, was a deadly thing to do.
"Where you come from? You realize where you come from is probably all gone, right? It's nice to have memories, but you can't live in them Dicey. You can't see things that aren't there or you're gonna get yourself killed."
He checked the knife at his side and decided to go exploring a little bit. He would let the girls sleep until they decided to get up and he hoped he could find something for them to eat without dwindling their supplies. Maybe there was a personal kitchen in one of the hangers. Rich people loved their snacks after all.
"Go to sleep. I'll lock you in and go clear some of the other hangars."
While this had been going on Lydia had, for the most part, been asleep. All the moving about and totally not flirting that was going on made it difficult to stay that way for a while. She stretched and yawned in her chair just as Phil was about to leave. "If you two want to share the room, I can take a watch shift." She said, standing up and grabbing her rifle. "It'll be a while before I can get back to sleep anyway. Waking up usually makes it hard to fall asleep again for a while." She walked over to the office door. "Go ahead, have some fun, I can take watch."
Dicey sat there on the couch and when the kid woke up and basically told her and Philip to hook up , she felt her jaw drop. She was speechless. What could she say? She realized how it had looked and sighed, resting her face in her hands.
She glanced up and felt the heat on her cheeks. She wasn't wanting to sleep with the guy, it had truly been an accident. She saw the girl leaving to take a watch, and she stared at Philip. Her expression was one of those, can you believe her, kind of faces. Dicey curled up in the corner of the couch. Knees drawn up , she didn't know what to say or do," how many times do I have to explain, it was an accident." She mumbled, it was easy to see she was embarrassed about this whole thing.
Phillip laughed as Lydia made her suggestion. Poor Dicey. He felt a little sorry for her, but not really. She could have laughed it off and played along. She could have flirted and joked back with him. Hell, she could have ribbed him right back. Instead, she chose to clam up and get more and more twisted up in it all.
He laid a hand on her shoulder and gave her a wink.
"Sleep tight Sleeping Beauty. I'll get back on watch with Lydia."
He got up from the couch and moved out, shutting the office door behind him to leave it nice and dark for her. As Lydia marched out he caught up with her, laughing a little.
"I don't think Dicey liked our jokes too much. She's kind of wound up."
He pointed towards the three hangars that were outside, all neatly built in a row for the little airport.
"You wanna take the second one and I'll go for the third? If you need help, just yell."
Lydia stopped when she heard Phil coming up behind him. "Alright then." She said, pulling out and checking over her pistol. "I must have just woken up at an awkward time because it sounded like the two of you were flirting." She looked over to the building that Phil had pointed out and nodded. "And if you need help, do the same." She said, making her way towards the hanger. Clearly whoever owned it had been in a hurry to try to escape, the door was open, and there were a handful of walkers meandering about the empty space. Lydia sighed and began to quietly take them out one at a time until the space was clear. She reloaded her pistol, tucking the empty clip away for later if they found bullets to put into it, and moved into the hanger. Her assumption of a hasty exit was accentuated by the sign of a couple suitcases and tipped over gas cans. Lydia made a note to bring Phil over here later to check it out. She was too focused on the potential loot that when a hand grabbed her shoulder she was surprised for the first time in recent memory. Letting out a scream she turned and opened fire at whatever had grabbed her.
"Flirting? Maybe. At least I was trying. She didn't seem to be in a mood to do that. I'm not sure she knows how." He chuckled and left Lydia to her hangar while he went to the last one. The sun was shining and it was so quiet. It reminded him of hunting alone in the woods with not a soul nearby. It had an eerie peacefulness to it.
He went to one of the doors that seemed to be locked up tight. Instead of just charging in, he decided to slap his hand against the metal shell of the building to see what he could attract inside. Still nothing. He moved down the length of the hangar, brushing his hand against the hot metal until he got to the end where he was met by a man. But he was no ordinary man. It was a large fellow wearing a mechanics jumper and he was certainly not alive. The guy was twice his size and it looked like he had only recently turned. There was a chunk taken out of his throat and he could only assume the man had been hiding in the hangar until his ultimate death. It didn't take long for the walker to come after him and he could either fight or run. Eventually they would have to dispatch this guy before he tore through one of the walls like the Kool Aid guy.
He pulled out a hatchet that was in a belt loop and readied himself.
He told her to get some sleep. Dicey sat on the couch for a few seconds, legs drawn up, head resting on her knees. Why had he done that? Cause she was available and not jailbait. Lydia , she acted pissed off, or was she joking? It had been so long since she was around people , she wasn't sure.
Dicey looked at the office door. Philip reminded her of most of the men she had ever known growing up. She wiped a few years that had spilled down her cheeks. Sleeping Beauty, her Dad had called her that. She had always said she wasn't a princess, but he said it had something to do with some old song he knew. God, she was crying and knew she wouldn't be able to sleep. She was angry with herself for crying, and not being more personable. Had she changed so much that she couldn't relate to other people? The thought scared her.
She wiped her eyes and got up. Dicey grabbed her gun, but didn't bother to put on her shoes. She went after Philip and Lydia. Once outside , she stood and looked around. Time to eat crow, if she could find them. Where did they go? Then she heard a bang from one of the hangers, like someone slapped it. She started off in that direction and came to the end in time to see Philip going at some dead man . The man was huge! Dicey lifted her rifle, aiming to take a shot.
One of her shots hit the walker that had grabbed her in the head but it still collapsed on her, sending her to the ground and she felt her head smack against the pavement. It stung, but she was still conscious and aware. Shoving the walker out of her she carefully stood up, trying to not make any sudden movements with a head injury. Her front was covered with walker blood and she could feel her own blood start tricking down her back. She made her wait of the the hanger, her whole body shaken with fear, she hadn't felt this way since the apocalypse started. She fell to her knees outside the hanger and started to cry.
The large walker was going to be a challenge. The axe may not even make it deep into his thick, hillbilly skull. He whispered under his breath, unaware that Dicey was behind him with a shotgun. "Fuck."
When the walker was close enough, he tried to land the axe between the eyes, but the walker's body was still strong enough to stave him off. The beast lunged at him looking to take a bite out of his exposed forearm, but thankfully he caught a bite of wood from the axe handle instead. Several teeth popped out and landed on the ground and it made him wonder if this guy had ever been to the dentist. He hadn't seen teeth pop out that easily when all this first started. He stumbled back a foot or two before the walker was on him again, trying to grasp him in a tight bear hug. He fought back, ripping the axe through his arm and chopping, but not completely severing it off. Gnashing teeth were too close to his ear and he stumbled back again, this time tripping on his own boots and landing on his ass in front of the large fellow. He was the kind of guy whose ego did not supercede the need for help.
"Lydia!" Certainly thinking Dicey was dead asleep, he called out for a little help even though Lydia was a crying mess herself right now.
Dicey struggled to get a clear shot as he fought with what once had been a huge man. She thought about taking it anyway, but didn't want to risk hitting Philip. A few seconds seemed like enternity, until Philip went down on his ass and yelled for Lydia. The girl, Dicey had lost track. Where was she, she thought as she took the shot. A clean shot to the head and one loud sound from the rifle. She lowered it and looked around,"where's the kid?" She moved a step or two and then saw her. Dicey ran, barefoot , and skidded to a vault. She dropped in front of the girl," are you bitten?" Dicey started to check her for wounds, bite marks." What happened?" She forgot about Philip for a moment. " that's it, we go as a team from now on, no splitting up ," she said as she spotted blood on Lydia's neck.
Lydia heard Dicey's shot go off but didn't react. When she ran over to her Lydia could feel herself starting to cry a bit more. "No...No I didn't get bit...I'm ok, just scared." She put a hand to the back of her head and felt her blood. "I hit my head when it fell on me. I killed it but it was coming at me so it landed on me. I hit my head on the ground..." Lydia just kept staring at the ground as she talked. This was the first time she'd felt like this in a long time.
Phillip went down as the shot was taken and the beast of a walker landed on top of him. Good thing he had already taken a piss before this, otherwise his bladder would have just let lose. He struggled to push the dead undead off him and when he finally did, he heard Dicey screaming about being bit. That alarmed him even more and instead of going back to the hangar he was going to check, he went back to where Lydia was. He skidded to a stop as he saw blood on her neck and tears streaming down her cheeks. He moved past Lydia, who was looming over the girl and bent down on one knee.
"Hey kiddo, it's okay. We're okay. No one is bit and that's what matters."
He looked up at Dicey who stood there with the rifle in hand. "Thanks for the shot. He was a little ..large."
Dicey stared at the back of Lydia's head, and glanced at the hanger. She saw Philip approach and how he was trying to comfort the kid," we need to get her inside and cleaned up." She wanted to say more, but didn't want to scare Lydia.
Dicey kept glancing around, making sure they weren't taken off guard. She bent down and tapped Philip's shoulder," let's get back inside, get her secure and then we can come check out the other hangers."
Lydia looked up and nodded at the two. "I...I can walk." She said, standing up, her legs shaky. "I can make it. This hanger looked pretty empty, not much interesting. It just got the jump on me." She grabbed her rifle from over her shoulder and used it as a makeshift cane to hold herself up. "I can make it back to the office, keep scouting the place." She said as she made her way back to the hanger they'd set up in. Flopping down in the big office chair she let her rifle fall to the floor and curled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
Phillip looked at Dicey as she spoke about continuing to clear the place and he shook his head. "I thought you were sleeping?" Either way, it seemed that both girls needed a little more then what they actually took.
"Dicey, go grab some sleep. Take Lydia back to the hangar to get it together. Lydia, you see if you can find some supplies in here. I'll keep taking care of the biters out here. Just yell if you need some help. I'm going to try and get us something to eat and start a fire."
There was plenty of jet fuel to get an easy fire started behind the hangar and he was pretty sure he could hunt something down, either a raccoon, rabbit or some sort of bird. When he looked up, he saw a flock of birds shoot up into the sky, which only meant one thing. There was something coming.
"Hurry up and get in. I'll take care of whatever that is."
Dicey didn't like the idea of the kid being on her own. She stood there and looked at Philip, but he seemed to feel the same. He told her to go with her, get some sleep. Sure, like that was gonna happen. She started to do what he wanted, trying to remember what things she had learned about a head injury. Dicey remembered that she shouldn't let the kid fall asleep, and that was about it.
She stopped and turned as she saw a group of birds . She glanced at Philip. He said to go get inside, he would handle it," like you handles that big sonofabitch?" She pointed at the walker she had shot," just be damned careful," Dicey stared at him for another moment, then headed inside. She ran to check on Lydia," you need to clean that up and let me take a look, but Philip is still outside, something out there in the treeline, spooked some birds." Dicey took up a spot at the door. She had it open enough for her to see and for her to fire from," I don't want to leave him without back up." She hoped the kid would understand. There was only one of her and they both needed her at the same time," talk to me, you shouldn't fall asleep."
She stared at the floor between her feet. She didn't want to sleep, she didn't want to do anything at all. Lydia just wanted to be alone and wanted everyone and everything else to go away. She didn't even notice it when Dicey came back in, not until Dicey put a hand on her. "I'm not sleeping. Please. Go away. Go help him. I'll be fine... Just...go..." She started to cry, tears streaked through the dirt and gore on her face. "go..."
Phillip went to edge of the treeline as the birds flapped away. When Dicey gave her little barb, he just looked over his shoulder and squinted his eyes at her. Sure the walker was big and he was having a hard time putting it down, but he would have gotten the job done. Dicey just made it a little easier.
All was quiet, oddly quiet although he heard some shuffling in the forest. The leaves were falling and branches were snapping as he heard what he believed to be a few walkers breaking through the forest. It must have been the gunshot that attracted them and he was well prepared to take a few shots from a safe distance. However, what he saw alarmed him. It wasn't one or two. It was about three dozen that were shuffling through the forest and as they got closer, they caught wind of the living.
"Shit!" He knew he did not have enough ammo to handle this and his only option was to turn tail and get back to the hangar to lock them in. Now he was running as the got back to Dicey and Lydia, motioning for them to get inside.
"Get in! Get in! There's a big mess of them coming!"
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
