By the time they crossed the bridge at the edge of the river, they ended up in Southaven. He was trying to drive a little closer to Memphis, but he veered off course a bit. He had gone due east on 79 and went through plenty of woods and farm land to get into the town. It was getting too late to continue and he could see packs of walkers moving towards the road. He knew he had to stop and up ahead was a small airport that looked like it housed private jets and planes. He saw some parked on the runways with abandoned cars and this seemed like a good enough place to top off for the night.
Lydia yawned and stretched in the back seat. She had no idea when she'd fallen asleep, but now she was waking up in a different state. Clearly Phil was a good man, or else she would be no where near as comfortable as she currently was. "Shouldn't you get some rest too?" She asked their driver, realizing that while him and Dicey had slept, he'd been up this whole time. She was hoping they'd stop soon so that she could get out and stretch her legs again. Car rides were never something she enjoyed, even though they were a necessary evil.
Dicey leaned up. She had slept and God did that feel good. She sat up straight and looked around as she pushed her hair back away from her face. She could hear the girl talking to Philip and she was right , he needed to sleep too.
Dicey stared out the windshield and saw what looked like a runway and a few planes." Where are we?" She shifted and looked out the other windows in the truck." Dang, how long did you drive? How long did you let me sleep?" She stared at him," thank you, Philip." She reached down and pulled her rifle into her lap," so what's the plan? We staying here for a bit , or just a refuel ?" She looked at Lydia and it was pretty obvious she had slept too. Dicey smiled at her, then looked back at Philip. She figured he was worth trusting. He got them here and hadn't done anything to hurt either one of them.
Phillip stopped the truck and looked down at the fuel gauge. They were nearly empty and he really didn't want to take the chance of getting abandoned in a place they couldn't handle. This place certainly had it's creepy factor, but at least they could find some shelter. Ahead he saw some storm clouds and lightning that were not too far off.
"We need to stay here for the night. I'll get some rest when we've found a safe place to sleep."
Maybe there were some offices or hell, even a plane they could sleep in. Rich people usually parked their luxury jets in a place like this and he actually thought it could be kind of fun to crash in some soft leather seats.
"Come on gals, grab your weapons and let's see what we have." He grabbed his rifle out of the back of the truck, leaving the boxes Dicey packed up behind. Until they knew what they were dealing with he felt the weight of all their things were an unnecessary risk. He moved closer to the first hanger and pressed his ear against the large double doors, listening for any movement inside.
"Stick close." He slapped his hand against the door, sending an echoing wave through the building. If there was anything inside, they would be drawn to that sound like a moth to a flame.
Lydia stretched a bit more, realizing she slept on her arm and it was pretty numb. She yawned a bit as she climbed out of the truck, grabbing her rifle and putting it over her shoulder. She took her pistol out from it's holster and checked it's silencer, making sure it was still properly attached. When Phil slammed on the door she just sighed a bit. "Great, now they'll know we're coming." She muttered, preparing herself for what was to come as she heard the shuffling of walkers moving inside the hanger. "Who's taking point?" She said, looking back and forth between the two adults.
Dicey winced as he made noise. Stick close, yea, she was gonna be on him like a cheap suit. She lifted the rifle and took a deep breath, then glanced at Lydia. She wanted to know who was going first," got a light? Keep it behind me, so you don't blind me." She hadn't heard any noise, no moans or anything that would make her think dead were inside. Slowly she eased forward, then glanced at Philip," cover our back" she moved into the darkness, one solid step at a time. She swept the rifle , right, then left and moved on. Nothing but her own heartbeat thundered in her ears. Dang, get it together.
As she moved forward she heard a sound. Like a thumping. Dicey moved slow and steady, inching towards it. As her eyes adjusted she could see what looked like a window. It was some sort of office and inside was a dead man. He was clawing and thumping himself against the glass. Obviously the noise had awoken his hunger. He seemed shut up inside. She wasn't about to open the door.
Phillip looked back at the girl who was talking about taking point. What the hell did that mean anyways? "Taking point? We're not cops or military. It's just three of us. You see walker, you take it down."
He heard some noises inside and when the man threw himself against the window, he waited for a few minutes to see if any others would join. He heard a few more groans and he also knew they had to stop somewhere for the night. Being on the road, in the open was way too dangerous.
He pulled the handle of the hangar door and pushed it open. There, they saw four more walkers shuffling towards them. He wondered how long they had been in there, but immediately he stepped back and fired off one shot, clipping one in the neck, before finally making contact with the head. It was a sloppy shot, but he was more of a long distance shooter anyways.
"Dicey, take the one of the left, Lydia, take out that woman on the right."
He moved forward, pulling out his hunting knife and burying it in the middle of the forehead of someone who looked to be dressed in mechanic's overalls. After he stabbed the man in the head, he heard a loud clang as the wrench in his pocket fell out. Another weapon and tool they could steal away.
Lydia nodded as he followed Phil inside, pistol raised and at the ready. She noticed her mark and took careful aim before taking the shot. The silent whif was followed by the sound of bullet passing through skull and the thud of the walker hitting the floor. It had been a fairly clean shot, just off center to the right. She lowered her pistol and turned to look at Phil, seeing what he planned to do next.
Dicey stopped when he gave her a target. She stood very still and took aim. Fired the rifle , and blew a hole in the side of the head. She lowered the rifle and glanced at Lydia and Philip. The sound of her shot resounded in the metal hangar. She felt her eyes dart around, looking for more dead coming for them. As she stood very still, she held her breath, waiting.
A moment passed, then another, and no more came for them. She exhaled, and stepped further inside. "We should double check and set a watch, then rest. Daylight we should scavenge what we can and get out of here."
Phillip got both the girls inside the hangar while he dragged the dead walkers out by the ankles. One by one he brought the boxes of supplies inside so no one would steal them and once it was all cleared, he shut the hangar door and flipped the heavy metal shaft to lock them inside. There were no lights, but with a flip of a switch on his flashlight, the area illuminated with the LED glow.
There was an office, a couple of planes and several storage closets they could raid and figure out what to take.
"I don't know about you gals, but this could be a good home. I mean really, who would come sniffing around an airport?"
He went to the office and saw an old leather couch that looked like it was worn from plenty of use. He didn't care. He laid down, propped his feet up and grinned to the girls.
"I suppose so." Lydia said, looking around their new shelter. "If only we could get one of those planes started, then maybe we could fly away to someplace safe. It'd beat having to walk everywhere." She entered the office and saw Phil claim the couch. Noticing a large office chair at the desk she took a seat in in, propping her legs up on the table. "I think I could probably sleep like this."
Dicey followed behind them, and once Philip claimed the couch and the girl claimed the chair, she shook her head. Fine. Odd man out. She saw how it was going to be.
Dicey stared at them for a moment," alright, I'll take first watch. Look around this place and see what I can find that might be useful." She held her rifle propped in her arm, and turned around. She got a flashlight from one of the boxes and started scouting the hanger. It had work tables against the walls. She started there first. On one wall was a map of the airfield. All the hangers and runway was mapped out. It wasn't a huge airport like the cities, but it seemed the town had a lot of amateur pilots that kept planes here and the place offered lessons. Maybe Philip had been on to something coming here. She leafed through some papers. They looked like part invoices. Dicey glanced over to a small pile of boxes on a desk. Well, she would go through those later. She figured she would let the. Relax for a few hours an then trade out.
Phillip closed his eyes although he was still awake, hearing Lydia. "Fly a plane out of here? Where is there anywhere safe to go? Even if we could figure out how to get up and down, I wouldn't have any idea where any safe places are. Maybe an island or two, but hell, then you're trapped on a damn island. Of course the fishing is probably good."
He opened his eyes as Dicey moved off to take first watch. He would let her have the couch when he got a few hours in and continue to let Lydia sleep. They had both gotten plenty of rest on the drive from Arkansas and he found himself feeling suddenly exhausted.
"Besides, I'd probably drive you both crazy if we were on some deserted island. Or you two would drive me nuts, one of the two." He laughed as he said that, hearing Dicey shifting through items.
"Dicey, wake me up in a couple of hours and you can have the couch. I'll take watch after that."
Dicey was ruffling through papers, and lifted her head as he spoke to her, "uhuh, sure." She wasn't gonna say it, but she would rather let him and the girl sleep, give her time to herself. She wasn't good with people, not anymore. Hell , she used to be. She loved football games and hanging out in the diner in town, meeting new people, but now, she just wanted to be left alone. She scanned through the invoices, and realized she didn't understand half of what was on it.
Alright, easy fix, go through all the boxes. She headed over and found a box cutter laying on one of the tables. She set her rifle down and started opening boxes. She made two piles. Things she thought they could use and things they couldn't. Unfortunately the couldn;t pile was larger, after a few hours and many boxes later. She sat on the floor and stared. This sucked. She felt like she ahd waisted her time. Dicey got up and spotted some lockers. She went over and found only a few she could open. She did find a couple jump suits, like mechanics wear, and boots. Those could be good, and she came across and old radio, wonder if she could find a way to use it for something. She had gone through the while open area of the hanger before she went to wake Philip, more than 5 hours had passed and she was getting tired again. She crept over to him, so she didn't wake Lydia, and ran a hand over his hair, as she bent to his ear, "Wake up, your turn."
Phillip slowly woke up as Dicey's hands ran through his hair. He took in a long, deep breath and sighed with a lazy whine. "I don't want to go to school today, mom." Was it a few hours already? His body had gotten used to sleeping just a little bit in uncomfortable places but this couch was quite cozy. It was his turn to get up and let someone else sleep.
Lydia was still asleep in her chair as he got up slowly, allowing Dicey to sit down and take over the couch, practically pushing him off with her feet. He chuckled as she took it all over rather quickly and he stretched.
"Find anything good?"
He had heard her rustling around before drifting off and in a few hours, the sun would be up to let him search around a little more. First, he had to take a massive piss though. He felt bad for the girls. It was a little more complicated for them to use the bathroom in the woods then it was for the guys. Of course, he would be a lookout for them if they wanted when they woke up.
Dicey crawled up on the couch, her feet pressed against his legs before he got up and stretched She smirked a bit as she watched him. Her body relaxed as she stretched out her legs. She whispered softly," yea, laid it all out on some of the tables in there, didn't find a toilet , but I didn't leave the man room either. " she yawned and smiled sleepily at him," found some boots and some coveralls, and your cute when you're half asleep." She chuckled and rolled over, putting her back to him as she faced the back of the couch. She wasn't used to sleeping like this. She caught naps as she could but never was one for getting too comfy. She was afraid to sleep too deeply. She listened to him moving around. He must have gone to check out what she had found. She had kicked off her shoes while she woke him up and didn't bother putting them back on as she sat up. It had only been a few minutes but she had stopped hearing him. It worried her. She crept out of the office and listened, before she followed what sounded like water running. She stopped as she saw him and froze, realiIng what she had heard. She felt the heat rise up over her face as she blushed and backed away , meaning to creep back to that couch as quiet as she could.
Phillip patted her on the head, tousling her hair a bit as he got up off the couch, giving her the full length of it while he took watch and tried to find something they could use. It didn't sound like she found much of anything, but then again it was dark and she probably didn't have many options to go through too much with just a flashlight. He moved towards a side door and stepped out with first light coming up over the horizon.
He unzipped the zipper and started to relieve himself. It was a good long while and liquid he had been holding in for far too long. He heard the footsteps behind him and it could only be one of the girls or a walker. Walkers usually made more noise though. He looked over his shoulder and saw Dicey standing there, although he couldn't see her blushing furiously.
"Come out to help?" He couldn't turn around or else he would urinate all over the floor and he preferred to keep it in the grass as much as possible. "I can manage, unless you really, really want to see how it all works."
He laughed as he said that, finishing up and shaking once before zipping back up and turning back to her. She had been caught and there was no getting out of it. He just wondered how far he could push her.
Dicey froze hearing his voice. She slowly turned back around to face him." No, I , " she was trying to speak and stammering a bit. She backed up a bit. Then realized he was making fun of her. " I heard water and thought," she ran a hand through her hair," hell, I didn't know what it was so I came to check it out." She stared at him," and I know how it works, I ain't dumb." She folded her arms across her waist.
Dicey felt like he was teasing her and poking fun and having a good laugh at her awkwardness. She moved closer to him," and if you think you need to show me how to use it, I've been showed before." She smirked at him and then turned around to go back to the office And the couch.
Phillip couldn't help but laugh as she stumbled along with her words, seemingly making things worse.
"You wanted to check me out? Wow Dicey, you move fast." Of course he was only ribbing her as he came back inside and she moved towards the couch to blatantly announce that she knew how the male plumbing worked. She got real close now and real defensive on her knowledge of all that.
"Just once, or like a few times? Just curious."
He was curious though. He wondered what kind of guy turned Dicey on. What was she like before all this and how had she become so feral? He could picture her working in a man's world and having to put up with all their bullshit. That's probably why she was so tough.
Dicey was doing her best to just ignore him. Let him have his fun. Hell, she should be used to it. Her father and brother used to rib her all the time over stuff.
It was the last part that halted her. And made her turn around." What, you think I'm some kinda slut? Well, I ain't, just once and with a guy I dated all through high school, alright?" She had blushed, but it would be hard to tell if it was embarrassment or anger causing it." Look, I ain't some silly girl, I can pull my weight, and I won't be gettin all weak in the knees just cause you grin at me like that and your pretty eyes, so don't even think about it, plenty guys tried but I don't just give it away if that's what you think." She turned around and wiped her cheek. She hadn't realized her eyes had filled up, but it didn't matter. She would t cry. She marched back in to the office and sat down on the couch.
