Dinah shrugged and nodded, "Couldn't hurt to look. I'll go with you to the science building, and the guys will go to the health center. Oh, and guys...rubbing alcohol is not for drinking." They gave her a dirty look before breaking out in smiles. They'd grown close spending two years with each other, and they actually liked her teasing these days, though it had been a long road to get to this point. They got the directions from Jonathon and headed off.
Dinah exited the kitchen, "Is the science building connected to the cafeteria, or are we going back outside again?"
"They could try the rubbing alcohol if they don't value their vision." Jonathon said rather dead pan to the whole team, smirking a bit. He watched as the rest of the team left leaving him with Dinah. "Unfortunately we will have to leave the building, it's still not much of a walk. I would usually grab lunch before running over to my general ed science class and was typically pretty slow about it." He said, moving back outside the building. He looked around and noticed the campus was still quiet. "We're in the clear, come on." He said, pulling out his knife just in case and jogged over to the science building. "Be careful, I think I remember hearing mention of a cadaver lab in here, who knows what we might run into inside. What exactly are you looking for?"
Dinah stepped outside with Jonathon and jogged behind him to the science building, shiny meat cleaver ready in her hand. Her eyes constantly scanned the nooks and crannies of the campus. It was very quiet here, and luckily both she and Jonathon were light on their feet. Only once did she turn to see her guys moving off in the distance toward the clinic, and then she continued behind Jonathon.
Catching up to him, she lifted her shoulders in a shrug. "I have no idea, really. You just never know what useful item could be hiding in there. Iodine tablets to purify water, batteries, acid, soap. I don't know. Worth looking into though, don't you think?" She paused when he mentioned cadavers, and she blinked. "You're kidding, right? Are we about to walk into a zombie zoo?"
"I doubt they'd have many corpses down there. Plus they'd be kept in some sort of cold storage in order to keep them from rotting. I'd bet that they would have gone forgotten when everyone panicked and fled the campus. When the power went out, they would have thawed and rotted. Depending on how this thing works, they might be in there." Jonathon said, breaking the door open. "Just giving you a heads up in case there's one or two shambling around in here. Most of what we want is on the higher floors too. Chem department's on the second floor, physics is third I think." He held the door open for her, looking for anything on the rest of campus. "I'll be right behind you the whole way, you call the shots on what we grab and when we move."
Dinah nibbled her lower lip nervously when she stepped past Jonathon and into the building. Her flashlight slowly tracked its way around and up and down the entrance before she ventured forward. "And why are you behind me and wanting me in charge? I know I'm a natural leader, but you appear to be the same."
Finding the stairs, Dinah swiftly jogged up to the third. "I say we start at the top and work our way down." Upon reaching the third floor entrance, she paused and peeked around the side listening and looking for all she as worth. Silence. Hm. "And what, exactly, is physics?" Walking to a lab, she shone the flashlight inside.
"It's your team I'm joining." Jonathon said, following closely behind her. "You seem to have them pretty under control and I'd rather not impose on the group you've got going. I don't know their needs or what you're looking for." He looked down a hall way, checking for movements or signs of anything. When she asked about physics he stopped and stared at her for a minute. "You're kidding, right? You're some sort of gymnast and you don't know what physics is? Really? Physics is probably 80% of what you do." As he moved through the lab he picked up a physics text book and tucked it away. "I'll explain it better later." He continued to walk around the lab, grabbing a few things. "Most of the stuff we'll want to grab is in the chem lab. Physics equipment is typically less useful in real life situations, unless you want to play a game of marbles." He chuckled, picking up a bag that clearly was supposed to be used for some sort of experiment. "Unless you see anything else you want, i say we move to chemistry."
Dinah's shoulders lifted defensively at Jonathon's words and tone. "It's not as if I went to college or had a normal academic childhood. I was home-schooled while following my dreams by learning to back-flip double-twist off the balance beam while my peers were following theirs in high school doing labs and writing college application essays." She huffed softly. The attitude came from being embarrassed. Dinah obviously didn't take embarrassment well. Clearing her throat, she headed back down the stairs. "Chemistry it is." She opened the door to that floor and peeked inside. All was quiet except for a bit of shuffling in the distant hallway. "Sounds like a dead one down that way. We should probably be good to avoid it by going into a lab." And she did just that. Turning the opposite direction from the shuffling sound, she tiptoed into the darkness, peeking into windows until she found a lab and opened the door.
Jonathon chuckled at Dinah's reaction. "Don't get so mad about it. It's ok that you didn't have a normal education. You seem like a smart enough girl with a good head on your shoulder. You hear the stories about kids caught up in stuff since birth being massive divas and never amounting to much once they hit a growth spurt or get to old to be adorable. You don't seem like one of those though, you seem like a real person." Jonathon followed her and heard the shuffling as well. He thought about going and handling it himself, but chose to rather stay close to Dinah in case there was more. Going into the chem lab he pointed his light switch towards a door with lots of warning stickers on it. "All the good stuff will be back there, unless you want glass ware or some other simple stuff. Any smart chemistry professor would keep all the chemicals in the back." He went to the front desk and started poking around. "Ha! Nice big box of matches." He checked to find that it was only about half full. He kept digging around till he found a key. "This should open that closet." Thankfully it did. "Help yourself to whatever looks useful." He said, grabbing some vials. "Ooh, That'll be fun." He grabbed some jars of various powdered substances and a small container of metal strips. "Ever heard of thermite?"
Dinah's shoulders relaxed as Jonathon assured her. He was the first nice person she'd met since the group had fallen apart, and she wanted to keep him. The more the merrier...and the safer. "Thanks. Sorry about that." She smiled sheepishly and followed him through the room to the cabinet. "I used to be teased about it from public and private school kids, but I guess none of that matters anymore these days. Old habits and feelings die hard, though."
Slender fingers stroked over the names of the some of the bottles until she found a few vials of iodine tablets which were dropped into the backpack. "Not only do I not know what thermite is, I have no idea what most of these chemicals are." There was a bag of disposable scalpels she scavenged as well as a pair of tongs, funnel, and mortar and pestle. "I don't suppose you could teach me a little something, smarty-pants?" She sent him a winning smile.
"Well, for those who do not know, thermite is a very interesting compound." He unscrewed the jars of powdered metal he had, finding an empty container. "It's also very particular to make, however, if I'm doing it right like I think I am, it can be very effective. To most, it looks just like sand and if you hold a match to it, nothing will happen. However, with a bit of magnesium..." He pulled out one of the thin metal strips and one of the matches, striking the match and holding it to the metal. There was a soft crackle as it lit, letting off a very bright but small light before burning out. "You can light it. Were I to demonstrate with this, it'd be a brighter light, lots of noise, and this powder would turn into molten metal that could cut through a car, at least, they did it on Mythbusters." Jonathon said, smirking at the girl. He tightly attached the cap and tucked it away. He returned to the cabinet and came out with a couple metal canisters and a few other things. "And here we have the ever useful propane, along with a few blowtorch nozzles and sparkers for lighting them." He found a duffle bag that was in the back room to put the propane in. "Anything else that you can think of to grab?"
Dinah cocked her hip against the counter and watched Jonathon work. Being an athlete, Dinah found interesting what talents others had, especially in academia. "That looks veeeeery handy." She was glad he was so useful and knowledgeable. She flashed a grin at him when he mentioned Mythbusters. "I sued to love that show. I miss TV so much. So anyway, were you a chem major?"
Sashaying to the teacher's desk, she opened drawer after drawer and pulled out a hand held pencil sharpener, three pencils, which she promptly sharpened, a notebook half full with paper, and what appeared to be probably a confiscated laser pointer. Dinah pressed the button and the bright red dot shone on the desk. That looked helpful. "Okay, I think I'm ready to go when you are."
"Not really, I was a history major." Jonathon said, chuckling a bit. "I took AP Chem though, and they required everyone takes at least one science class, even if they aren't in the department. I did some extra work around the lab for the professor, I wound up being top of that class." He slung the duffle bag of propane and things over his shoulder and moved towards the door. "There isn't a whole lot left we could steal, unless you want some little pigs soaked in formaldehyde or whatever it is they keep in the bio department, never went there much." He put a hand on the door, listening outside for anything. He heard a shuffling sound, close enough to be concerning. "I think there's a walker in the hall. Stay close, just in case there's more then one." He said as he slowly opened the door, pulling his knife out.
Dinah perched on the desk, swinging one leg back and forth. Pulling the ponytail holder out of her golden hair, she repositioned her ponytail and tightened it before hopping down. "You're a super smart guy, Jonathon. What did you want to do when you graduated?" She smiled up at him when she walked over. Glancing at the soaking pigs, she wrinkled her nose. "Ew. No thanks."
The smile vanished when the walker was mentioned, and Dinah's fingers firmly grasped the handle of her dagger until her knuckles were white. She gave a nod that she understood, and bent her knees in readiness.
Jonathon quietly moved into the hall way, knife at the ready. He saw his prey and snuck up behind it, stabbing the creature in the back of the head. He pried the knife out and caught the walker before it could drop, setting it down gently. He used his shirt to wipe off his knife before turning back to Dinah. "I wanted to be a teacher." He said, rather nonchalantly. "And what about you, did you have a back up plan, or was gymnastics the only thing for you?"
Dinah watched impassively as Jonathon quickly and efficiently dispatched the lone walker in the hallway. He was good. Very good. Idly, Dinah thought back to when she had been rather squeamish at the sight of blood and gore. Now, it was just an every day occurrence. Strange.
She was brought back to the present when Jonathon turned back toward her, and she blinked back to reality. Dinah, she thought to herself, it's dangerous to daydream. Carefully skirting her way around the cadaver, she took the lead once more, tiptoeing past the spot where the walkers were simply standing with their backs to the hallway in the darkness. Once they were in the stairwell and the door softly closed behind them, she answered his question. "I had hoped to become a coach for the USA team when I retired from gymnastics. If that didn't work out, I kinda wanted to be a motivational speaker and go to schools around the country talking about work ethic and intrinsic motivation." Her thin shoulders rose in a shrug as if she was slightly embarrassed about her future goals. "What kind of teacher did you want to be? History? High school?"
"Close, junior high." Jonathon said, glancing back at the handful of walkers. "I say we leave them, they aren't doing any harm and won't be getting out." He opened another door and moved into another hall way. "Now we just need to meet up with the rest of your team and then we can head out of here. The sooner we can get out of the city the better I say." He stepped out of the building, looking around and seeing things still seemed to be quiet. "And motivational speaker you say." He looked back at Dinah and smiled. "I guess I could see that, from what I know of you so far."
"Junior high?!" Dinah gaped at Jonathon. "Maybe you should be the motivational speaker, J. I can't imagine being around hormonal teenagers every single day. You just keep on impressing me." Brushing by him as they stepped outside, she too gave a cursory look around. "Let's head to the infirmary. They may be on their way back or may have run into trouble." She wasn't really all that worried about them, though. They had been the strongest of the first group she'd been with, and had proven resilient every step of the way.
Suddenly there was a shout up ahead followed by a scream of pain and a gun shot. Three of her men came staggering out of the infirmary supporting a fourth between them. "Oh my God..." she whispered and took off at a run to catch up with them. She was halfway there when walkers began pouring out of the infirmary drawn by the shouts, gunfire, and the scent of the blood pouring from Bobby's leg trailing on the ground behind him.
"Yeah, thanks." Jonathon said, smirking a bit at Dinah's complement towards him. He casually followed behind her, glancing around, then he heard the shout. Then he saw the group of men. Then he saw Dinah run. "Dinah wait!" He started to run after her, this was bad. As the horde of walkers came out Jonathon swore and pulled out his rifle. He took a few shots, knocking some down, as he caught up to Dinah. "We have to get out of here, now!" He said, throwing his rifle back over his shoulder, drawing his pistol and grabbing her arm. "There's too many of them, we're screwed if we stay here." He fired off a few more shots and tried to drag her. "Come on Dinah, we need to get moving."
Dinah heard Jonathon's shout behind her as she took off running toward her friends. There was no time to waste, though. She was halfway there, blade out and clutched in her white-fisted hand when a walker caught Champ in the neck with its teeth. He was dragged down pulling the injured Bobby with him. Antonio let go and began to run but was overtaken in a heartbeat. Dinah froze, hands raising to clutch her hair at both sides of her head. "No, no, no..." she whimpered on a sob. Antonio took one shot and threw a canvas bag with a red cross on it toward her. It landed a few feet away. Before she could gauge what to do, Jonathon had her arm in his strong hand. She was dragged a few steps before she shook him off, ran forward and snatched the bag up by the straps then swiftly turned and ran back toward Jonathon, grabbing his hand with her free one. Most of the walkers had stopped to feed on the three men, but more followed, catching the scent of fresh prey on the air.
"Don't stop." Jonathon said to her, shoving Dinah to be in front of him. He fired randomly into the crowd, dropping a few walkers in the process. "I'll be right behind you." He emptied the clip and swore, holstering the pistol and focusing on getting away. He kept running until they were well off campus, seeing a door that was slightly ajar he grabbed Dinah and pulled her in, shutting the door behind them. It looked like he'd found some sort of convenience store, grabbing a shelf he dragged it over to be in front of the door. "I'm sorry we couldn't save them. I'm sorry Dinah."
