"I'm not sure how far I've been. I tried to stay close to this area. Part of me is hoping some of my dad's old hunting buddies are alive and around." She said, climbing into the back of the truck. "The only times I've been out of state it was too these remote locations, I usually slept in the ride there so I could be awake for the actual hunting. Sorry I'm not much help." Most of her life all she'd really known was wooded areas from tree stands, waiting for an animal to cross her path. Even her home was rather secluded, so signs of civilization were and oddity to her.
Dicey listened to the girl talk to Phillip. She was quiet at first," well, I came from Georgia, east isn't much better than west , probably." She fiddled with the strap of her pack.," the river sounds like a good plan, hunting and fishing should be pretty good, but I doubt we are the only ones thinking of that.' She glanced at Phillip," the more people, the more it's gonna attract the bad people, like those ones that came to our farm."
Dicey grew quiet again, and leaned her pack against the door. She propped her head on it." I just don't wanna have to shoot anymore living people if I don't have to." She spoke softly and stared out the windshield.
"Well, let's just head east and see where that gets us. Maybe we'll find some others like us or maybe we'll be on our own. Either way I think if we can get into the mountains in Tennessee we'll be okay."
Or so he thought. Nothing was okay anymore and nothing was safe. He had no idea if he was taking them to safety or leading them into the hands of death. It was better then sitting around and waiting to die. He started up the engine, shut the door and slowly rolled out with the crunch of gravel beneath the truck wheels. He passed his own broken down truck that had no use to it, looking at it as he rolled past, heading down the long, endless road that he hoped would be better then what they had here. There were a few lone walkers here and there, but nothing for them to be at all concerned about.
"Hunting buddies you say? I'm a hunter too. You girls know how to hunt big game?"
"Depends on what you called big game. My dad took me bear hunting once. It wasn't too exciting because they're pretty slow. I didn't break any records, but I did have the biggest bear of the day." Lydia said, not gloating, just telling a story. "We hunted elk once, that was interesting. Really cold though. What about you, what sort of things have you hunted...besides walkers."
Dicey drew her legs up in the seat. She listened to them talk. Seemed these two were hitting it off. She chuckled to herself. She was gonna be a third wheel. She sat there quietly. They were talking hunting. She could join in, but it seemed these two had found some common ground, so she kept her mouth shut, besides, why should she build anything with them. She would just end up hurt and alone again soon enough. People died. This new world was harsh, and it was made to break you. Dicey wasn't going to break so easy, so she kept her distance.
She glanced over at Phillip a few times, and the girl in the review mirror. Maybe she should get some sleep, but she wasn't sure. She stared out the windshield , and blinked a few times. Her eyes were playing tricks, had to be. She was over tired. She could have swore she saw her brother on the side of the road. Couldn't have been. The road slipped past them, as Phillip drove, "did you see that?" she spoke softly?" a kid, standing near the road, back there?" She leaned up and turned in her seat a bit, trying to see. God she sounded crazy, she knew she did.
Phillip seemed impressed by the big game Lydia bagged. He liked to hunt, but smaller game were more his thing. "I've hunted deer and wild hog before. Squirrel and duck too. I really like fishing though. Something about being out on a quiet lake before the sun rises that really calms the nerves."
He looked over at Dicey, who seemed incredibly withdrawn. Maybe she didn't like the conversation about hunting or maybe she just didn't have anything to contribute to it. He continued east, hoping to get closer to Tennessee by nightfall when Dicey sat up and pressed herself against the window.
"What? I didn't see anything." Slowly he stopped the truck and flipped the gear into reverse as they rolled back. There was someone on the side of the road and it looked to be a kid. But this kid didn't need a ride. He needed a meal. It was a walker that was roaming now closer to their truck.
Lydia sat in the back seat of the car, staring out the opposite window. When the truck stopped she looked at the two people in the front seat confused. As they backed up, she looked out through the back window and saw the walker. As Phil pulled to a stop and started to get unhooked, Lydia cracked open the back window. "Don't worry, I got this one." She pulled her silenced pistol from it's holster and took aim through the window. There was a faint pift sound as the bullet traveled through the air followed by the thud of the walker hitting the ground. She closed the window again and put the gun away. "Ok, we're good to go now...right?"
Dicey just stared in horror at the dead kid. It wasn't her brother after all, but in life they could have been related. They looked so similar. She swallowed as she watched it drop. The casual way the girl spoke of killing it. Deep down it upset her. She did what she had to do to survive, but it always bothered her. Each dead walking had been a person, and putting them down was just a price to living now. The fact that this girl did it so easily unnerved her , a lot. She glanced at her, then shifted back to stare out the windshield. " I thought," she looked at Phillip," he looked like my kid brother, sorry" she sat still, and looked out the window.
Phillip sat there for a moment as Lydia took care of the walker. It was a good shot, nice and quiet, but he also knew those bullets wouldn't last forever. He would have preferred a knife shot to a wasted bullet. But like everything, all good things must come to an end. He sat there with the engine idling for a minute as he looked over at a clearly shaken Dicey. Why would she see her brother all the way out here? It was a coincidence that was an impossibility.
"Look, Dicey, I get your loss. Hell, I have no idea if my parents are alive or dead. Sometimes wanting things so badly makes you see things that don't really exist. If you want, you can go and check to make sure, but I would bet that wasn't your brother."
He felt sorry for her in that respect but it also made him wonder if she was going to be able to hold it together. Was every person she saw going to be a problem for them?
Lydia looked at the two in the front seat and listened to Phillip doing his best to console Dicey. She wanted to say something to try to help her, but wasn't sure if anything she said would be the best for her. After all, Lydia had been responsible for killing the only family she'd ever known after he turned. The way she saw walkers is that they were just another animal, a pest really. Too many of them and that meant it was open season on them, just like anything else that gets over populated. That's how she coped with it, walkers weren't people, they were a nuisance.
Dicey stared out the window," I'm just tired. I haven't gotten much sleep lately. Being alone." She glanced at the rear view and looked at Lydia. She wanted to explain her mistake with the dead kid." Raiders attacked our farm, they killed all of my family and a lot of those gathered there, but my youngest brother they took with them. I've been hoping to find them and him, alive." She stared out the windshield, then glanced at Phillip," I'm not losing it, just tired and I made a mistake."
"It's okay. Why don't you get some sleep. It's a long drive and we've got a way to go." He looked in the rear view mirror to Lydia who seemed to be oddly quiet. She looked like she was going to say something, but decided to just keep it to herself. Probably for the better. If Dicey was tired and on edge, the last thing he needed was a fight in the truck.
He reached into the glove box, looking for a map or anything that could give him some sense of direction. When nothing was found, he pulled down the sun visor and a map just fell right into his lap. It was more a regional map, but still, it could help.
"You should grab some sleep too Lydia. It's going to be a while until we get to Tennessee."
The day grew long and the sun started to set as they headed east. It would take hours but by the time it got dark, they were at the border and south of Memphis.
