"Alright," Kara said, setting aside the Clif bar for the time being as another of the group introduced himself to her. "I'm Jack, the medic in this neck of the woods. Drake's our construction worker, fixing up the walls and messes with other things around here. Victoria over there is our cook. She can make just about anything taste good, and considering the circumstances it's a fantastic thing. Jeff knows anything and everything there is to know about weapons."
"Nice to meet you, Jack," Kara replied, shaking Jack's hand as he spoke; almost as soon as she spoke, Victoria offered her a warm - very warm by the appearance of it - bowl of ramen noodles, which Kara accepted without hesitation. Digging in, she realized that she must've been hungrier than she had earlier thought; as she ate, she tried not to show it, instead quietly sitting and listening to the sounds of everyone around her talking. Whatever happens, she quietly thought to herself, if asked to stay, I'll accept, adding, its' time I settled down somewhere, even if it is in the middle of a nightmarish world...
Victoria sat down next to Kara and smiled, "I hope I don't seem weird. There aren't many women here. It's just 4 women against 6 men, it's a little tiring."
She looked over at Drake and Jack talking about the trip for more food. Drake was suggesting they check the Kroger closer to the main street. It was in a more biter populated area but that meant there was a higher probability of products they can use.
"I hope you don't mind me asking," Victoria asked without looking at Kara, "What did you do before this all started. I was a 4-star chef, but now all of that doesn't mean much. All I can offer is food that just barely has a good taste."
Felix watched the walkers pushing against the fence. "Dammit. Mia!" Felix called and spun his fire axe to the spike at the end of it. Swinging the spike through a spot in the fence jamming it into a walkers skull he knew he'd need something more. Jumping onto the ladder climbing up to the lookout he gave a smile to the group. "Hey no rush or anything but we got biters."
Victoria sat down next to Kara and smiled, "I hope I don't seem weird. There aren't many women here. It's just 4 women against 6 men, it's a little tiring."
"No, you don't seem weird," Kara replied as she continued eating, thinking, she seems friendly enough. "Weirdness is just a state of mind; to one person, it might seem weird...to another, not so much." Finishing the bowl of ramen, she was about to add something when Victoria spoke once more...
"I hope you don't mind me asking," Victoria asked without looking at Kara, "What did you do before this all started. I was a 4-star chef, but now all of that doesn't mean much. All I can offer is food that just barely has a good taste."
Leaning back in her chair, Kara folded her arms across her chest and thought about her life before the gnarlies arrived. "I don't mind, Victoria. I was a sheriff's deputy back in North Carolina; most of my days, I'd either be driving around, pulling over speeders and the occasional drunk, or I'd be working in the jail, watching over inmates and making sure you made it through your shift every day." Catching the last bit, she added, "Hey, don't beat yourself up like that...we're all alive, that has to count for something," leaning over to put a friendly hand on the girl's shoulder, adding, "and with the way things are now, every day you're living is another day to the good. I mean, we could all be gnarling around out there instead of cherishing the fact that we're still alive...I guess that's how I look at it...
"I mean, I was a just a redneck girl from a 3-stoplight;- no, wait, 4-stoplight - little town in the North Carolina mountains...now I'm in Kentucky. Did I ever imagine that would happen?" smiling as she continued.
Victoria smiled, "I didn't expect it either. I was on a plane headed to New York for a show, you might have heard of it, Chopped. When the biters attacked we were told to stay in the air but we were suppose to stop to re-fuel in this area. So the pilots just circled until they had to land. If it wasn't for Amelia and Felix, I'd probably still be at the airport or dead."
Amelia looked down at Felix, "Those guys are the least of our worries!"
Tarren and Lex looked over at the fencing along the other side of the highway where her finger was pointing, they saw a small horde pushing up against the fence.
"Felix we should send a small party over there to take it out before it gets bigger! Tarren and Lex can take care of the fence here, I'll keep guard!"

"Yeah, I think I might've heard of that show," Kara said as her and Victoria sat inside the theatre. Leaning forward, Kara held her head in her hands for a few moments. "The day when it happened, I was working in the county jail supervising meal service to the inmates. We were about finished when we started hearing a commotion out in the visitors area; me and another deputy got up there and saw a bunch of people attacking a jail visitor," pausing to grimly chuckle, "more like chewing on that visitor, come to think of it...
"While a bunch of other deputies went up front to see if they could stop whatever was going on, I kept watch on the other deputies and jail trustees...but even I could tell we weren't going to stop them. So I told the other deputies to start opening the cells, let the inmates out. One of them looked at me and asked, 'What, are you fucking nuts, Kara?' I told him - no, yelled at him, "Frank, better these inmates have a chance to defend themselves rather than die of starvation in these cells!
"So, we started opening every cell in the jail that we could get to...eventually, we got all the cells opened and one of the back sally ports opened, telling the inmates and staff, 'get out of the building!' Nothing else, just get out of the damned building...at least we got all of them out. What happened to them afterwards, that wasn't my concern; I just didn't want them to starve if we left the jail before hand.
"After that, I barely managed to get out of there myself...drove back to my trailer, grabbed a few things and just decided to leave, take an apocalyptic world tour or something," chuckling once more. After a few moments, she added, "and after a long, long travail, I'm here."
"Well, we're glad you found us. Just wait, when Felix and Amelia get back I'm sure they'll offer to let you stay. They always do," Victoria smiled at Kara.
Drake walked over having finished his discussion with what appeared to be disgruntled Jack, "What have I missed?"
Victoria looked over at Jack confused, "What was that about?"
"Oh he's just grumpy," Drake said with a smile, "You know how full of himself he is, don't worry about it Vicky."
Victoria punched his arm with half of her strength, obviously holding back. "What did I say about calling me Vicky," she fumed.
Before Kara could reply, both Drake and Jack re-entered the dining area. Watching the back-and-forth between Victoria and Drake, Kara chuckled as she watch Victoria lightfully give Drake a punch to the shoulder. "Forget that," she deadpanned, opening her backpack up and removing a small, collapsible nightstick and setting it on the table, "just hit him with that. He'll stop," smiling as she sat back in her chair.
Watching Drake back up, Kara said, "Go get him, Victoria," adding without missing a humorous beat, "Next time he calls you...what was it, Vicky, I think? Next time he says that, cuff him to a chair and then use that nightstick on him," laughing as the thought passed through her mind. "I'll keep an eye on things and look the other way then," finishing with a bemused look and saying, "Yeah, Drake, why are you backing up there?"
Victoria chases Drake off with the nightstick, both of them laughing like little kids. Off to the other side of the room Jack just shook his head and went inside the armory, leaving the two alone to be stupid together.
As she watched Victoria chase off after Drake, Kara leaned forward and relaxed, resting her head in her hands, feeling relieved and thankful that, as screwed up as the world was now, there could still be moments of frivolity. Setting her pistol on the table, she dug around inside her backpack, looking for her trusty little gun kit. Where is that sonuva..ahh, there it is! she whispered, setting it and a couple of small cloths next to it; after a few moments, she began disassembling her pistol and set about cleaning it so that it'd be ready if necessary...
Jack peeked his head out the armory door, seeing Kara working on his gun he came back over to where she was sitting. "Would you like to see the armory?"
Continuing to work on her pistol, Kara was all-but-finished when she heard Jack's voice from around the Armory door. "Would you like to see the armory?"
"Sure," Kara said after a moment's hesitation. Putting her gun-clearning gear back in her backpack, she walked over and joined him. "So," she added, "this is the armory, huh? Nice," looking around. "So what do we have here?"
He looked around him and shrugged, "I'm not good with the mumbo jumbo that comes with guns and other weapons but I know we've got a lot. This town had quite a large group of gun owners, not to mention we're near the police station. We collect what we find and keep most of it here, of course everyone has a favorite."
He sat down at the table in the middle of the room and began cleaning his own piece, a Glock 17. "I'm showing you this room because I figured you'd like to take a look. Also Jeff will be miffed that he didn't get to show it off himself." He looked up and smiled at Kara, "I aim to make him annoyed when I can."
He looked around him and shrugged, "I'm not good with the mumbo jumbo that comes with guns and other weapons but I know we've got a lot. This town had quite a large group of gun owners, not to mention we're near the police station. We collect what we find and keep most of it here, of course everyone has a favorite."
"Neither am I," Kara said, whistling silently at the arsenal in sight. "We had one deputy back home who seemed to know everything there was about weapons, but we'd always joke that either he was very touched in the head or was compensation for something, if you know what I mean." Sitting down, she thought about the second part and added laconically, "Now why, oh why, would you do that?" chuckling at the thought.
