Dannie and Sterling left the cabin, heading down the driveway that led back towards the barn that she had found before. She made sure he was armed, as was she, before the left. She didn't want to use her gun and it seemed likely that she would use it against the living before she used it against the biters anymore. They were slow and it was easy to pick them off. Learning to kill them was the hardest part of learning to survive, but once you had it down to a skill it was like squishing spiders.
She moved at the pace that was comfortable for Sterling, saying nothing as they started towards a tree lined path that looked like it was cut out by ATVs. It appeared to be a hiking path and she had no idea where it went. She would have to assess how to protect this perimeter they were going to create and in an unfamiliar place, they would have to be careful. She was, after all, a city girl.
"So, what's with you and the nurse? I mean, I get that you can be attracted to other women, but do you think it's because she took care of you? And what happens if you two have a falling out? I can't send that girl out on her own if things go south between you both, you know."
"I wouldn't ask you to Dannie, if things go south then we handle it like grown adults. Does it have something to do with the fact that she took care of me? Honestly I'm not sure, it has just been coming so naturally. I haven't really taken the time to sit down and try and figure out why."
Sterling kept his eyes alert and was constantly scanning the area. It would be far to easy for something to go wrong in this unknown area, especially if they didn't stay aware of what was going on around them. He couldn't have picked a better companion for the perimeter search though. He knew Dannie well, and that included knowledge of her skills and abilities. It also helped that he trusted her with his life. He knew that if something happened she would help him.
"I guess I am just kind of letting things happen. I was such a mess after my wife died, and I was convinced that she was it for me... but now, I don't know. Liz seems kind, and she makes me feel alive. In this world, the way it is, that is almost all you can ask for. You should find yourself a distraction here. It is amazing to not have every thought be about where the next threat is coming from."
"Yea, well, just be careful. Don't let this be a rebound thing, partner."
She started to move across some large boulders that were firmly planted in the ground. She could see the roots of the trees building and growing around it and thought this could be a good lookout spot. She could see down the road towards the driveway and it was a good spot to see danger coming from that way. Maybe they could chop some of the trees down and make sharpened fence posts that could skewer some walkers if they approached. However, as she said that, she turned to hear shuffling in the leaves.
"Well, at least you have something to look forward to. In this new life, I'm pretty sure it's not so easy to find someone you can care about like that."
She crouched down on the rock and looked at the two walkers that were coming their way. She raised a brow as she looked at them moving slowly, lethargically and stumbling towards the trees. One even ran into a tree before orienting and coming back for them. "What do you think, partner? You want to try and take one out?"
"You kidding? I've been aching for some action since I got shot. I hate feeling so useless."
He pulled the knife out of it's sheath and felt the weight of it in his hand. It felt nice to have it at the ready like this again. He whistled softly to get their attention and make sure that there were no others in the area that they would need to take out. The last thing that they needed was to run into a situation that they couldn't handle. If they were caught off guard it could easily end up that way.
Dannie wasn't about to let Sterling get hurt. Not again. She wanted to watch his back and see what he could do with the healing injury still plaguing him. He said he was ready for some action, but was he truly ready? She wanted to make sure if she was going to keep this cabin safe from walkers.
"Alright, but you know I can't let anything happen to you. Don't be an ass and take on more then you can chew."
The thought of those words made her chuckle a little.
"Or let something chew you instead."
She started to flank left around the boulder to take care of one of the walkers, but she wanted to see what Sterling could do first. She would be able to hold off her walker to pay attention to what he was doing. As she watched, moving to keep the walker to the left near to her, she saw the walker to the right slowly lunge towards Sterling mouth open and agape as it snapped jaws at him. It made her cringe as watched the creature lunge towards him. But Sterling was a good cop and she knew he was also a good shot.
"Come on now, when have you known me to be stupid, oh wait." He chuckled a little and then moved into action.
He was being deliberately slow, not wanting to put himself in a situation that he couldn't handle. It shouldn't be difficult really. It didn't take much effort to get a knife through one of these things heads. As it lunged towards him he took a small chance, but ultimately one that should put him in a much safer place to handle it. He sidestepped and grabbed it by the back of the head and with a snap threw it to the ground. It didn't have enough time to attempt to latch onto him. He followed through by leaning a knee on the walker and stabbing it in the back of the head. He rose to his feet. There was a small amount of pain but nothing he couldn't handle. He looked over to Dannie and waited to see her take care of her walker.
When she could no longer wait to kill her walker, she turned, pulled out a knife and stabbed it right between the eyes. The walker fell and when she turned back she nodded to Sterling as she approached.
"Well, looks like you still have it in you, partner."
She smiled at him and started to walk a little closer when she heard a loud crashing noise coming from the barn that she had scoped out earlier in the morning. She snapped her head sideways to see what was going on when she heard a sudden scream coming. That's where Finn went to try and get supplies.
"Shit. Come on."
She knew Sterling couldn't run too fast right now, but he could catch up when he could. She ran down the driveway and across the street to the over sized barn. The door was already opened from when Finn went in and when she looked in, she saw Finn trapped beneath some paint cans and chains with two walkers on top of him. There was another door that was open and the only thing she could assume is that either a trap was set or they were hiding and Finn made a fatal mistake. It was too late for him. The walkers were already on him, tearing at his flesh and organs as they dined without concern for anyone or anything else.
She didn't see the walker that had come around the back of the barn, right up behind her as she spoke.
Nate had walked the perimeter, first going the wrong way and having to back track. He continued to search for Dannie and Sterling, thinking with the man's wounds they couldn't have gotten far. He walked along the trees and heard the acream from the barn. Finn had gone there, if Dannie ad Sterling were close they'd have gone there too.
He ran the best he could, limping along and scraping his foot along the ground. He held the axe in his hand and as he came into the back of the barn he saw the commotion. Finn had been pinned, dead, and there were biters. Nate saw the Walker behind Dannie, she wasn't even looking at it. He ran up an brought the axe down on its head, splitting it open.
"You two get the others," he said as he ripped his axe out, "I came to bring you back, everyone else is back, we need to set up a watch."
Sterling hadn't been fast enough. If it hadn't been for Nate Dannie would probably be walker chow and he wouldn't have gotten there in time to stop her from being bitten and therefore turning. Damn his bum leg. He moved as quickly as he could to catch up and moved forward. He was angry and though he probably was pushing himself too hard now he needed to keep going. There were still walkers around. He saw only a couple of them so he stabbed the first one quickly and moved on.
By the time he got to his second one he could hear the other had been taken care of and he snapped. He slammed his shoulder into the things chest, sending it sprawling to the ground. He then sprung at it and stabbed it in the skull. It wasn't enough for him though. His anger was riled and he had slipped into one of his blind rages. He stabbed the thing over and over again until it's face had sunken in and nothing was left but a giant hole where it's face used to be. He then moved on to it's body, though it was completely useless, the thing was already put down, he stabbed again and again into it's chest.
As he stabbed the walker a deep, guttural, scream erupted from his mouth.
"Fuck you, you stupid fucking dead bastard."
He eventually stopped but by the time he had the walker barely resembled the human it had once been and he could barely breath.
"Holy shit!" She turned and cried out as Nate took down the walker that was shuffling up behind her without warning. She could kick herself for not even hearing the damn thing from the rattle of the paint cans that seemed to echo as they rolled around from Finn's flailing and eventual demise. She backed up with the knife in hand, looking to see if Sterling was in the barn yet.
"Thanks ..Nate, right? Thanks."
She heard Sterling cry out as he screamed the walker. She looked at Nate, then back to the door as she saw the newly bloody Sterling on top of the creature. The thing was long dead and Sterling was on a rampage over it. She was about to pull him off it, but she stopped herself. He needed to get this out. From being shot and being held hostage as a prisoner inside a camp, he needed this power. "Let him get this out then we can go."
She watched as the stabbing continued, sending slivers of flesh flying and brain matter oozing across the ground. His breath was ragged when he finally stopped and when he was kneeling over it panting having exposed his rage about everything, she approached. She gently put her hands on his shoulder, pulling him back as she spoke.
"Come on, Sterling. We have to get back to the house. We have to go. Liz needs you." Even if Liz didn't he would certainly be swayed by her words.
