Nate followed closely, holding the axe. If they found an animal he's have to change quickly, but it was better against the dead than the guns. He could opperate quicker and smoother. He was here more for pretection than to actually shoot something. Not that he wouldn't shoot, just the cpuldnt have both of them armed just with guns. The had a strap he could use to hang off him, until then he just followed.
Once they came out on the other side he looked at Hykeem, "those small creatures weren't worth gettig? A meals a meal," he said calmly, "hopefully they run into Veran's traps." He swung the axe in a circle and walked up to the side of the old farmhouse. He touched the side of it and leaned the axe against it. Nate stretched out and picked the axe back up. "Let's clear this out," he said with a smile, "I'll go in first you check for followers."
Nate went around front of the door and knocked the axe handle against it. He knocked again trying to alert any of the growlers inside, "anyone in here," he called out, "come and get it." He saw one, a single growler stumble out. Nate pulled the door open and it charged at him. It tripped on the door and fell. Nate quickly brought his axe down on its head, splitting the skull. He ripped it out and listened for more.
"Got another one," he said, "must be trapped in a room."
Hykeem watched his friend Nate as he brought the axe down on the walkers head splitting the skull. The smell was disgusting but Hykeem had been getting used to it. He walked slowly around the the room he had entered after Nate killed the walker looking around when his friend alerted him that there was another walker trapped in a room. "Things aren't as smart as you'd think" Hykeem spoke bending over and lifting an rusted but sharpened piece of steel from the floor before examining it.
"This'll work" Hykeem said aloud before walking over to the entrance to the room the walker was in. Lucky for him in the middle of the door was a window. He shook his head before knocking on the door drawing the attention of the walker. He could hear the low and desperate growls of the hungry beast inside of the room as it got closer and closer to where the door was until it's face was against the glass.
The walker had done exactly what Hykeem intended and now it would be easier for Hykeem to kill it. He lifted up the blade he had collected in the room before sliding his finger down the edge of it before he placed it on the glass centering it on the beast's forehead. He slowly took a few steps back looking back quickly to make sure he didn't bump into anything and the bam. Hykeem had pulled the blade back and forced it through the window and the walker's skull killing the creature of hell without endangering himself or his friend.
After the walkers again dead body fell down unto the floor releasing a hard smack and a soft splatter Hykeem reached his arm through the door unlocking it and then opening it from the inside. "Let's see if we can find anything worthwhile." With those words he entered the small room and began scavenging for anything he thought was useful.
"Think I saw a kitchen," Nate said after watching his friend kill the Walker and enter the room, "you check this one, and the other rooms beside it. I'll cover the main room and the kitchen." He swung his axe around and moved toward the kitchen. Once there he set his axe on the island and began opening cupboards and pulling out items.
He managed to find some expired cereal, cans of peaches, few paper plates, and a tub of what lokked like juice. He set it all beaide the axe and opened the fridge. After a whiff of whatever was inside he quickly shut it and leaned up against it. "Every thing's rotten in there," he said to himself. He opened some lower cupboards, finding some detergent and other cleaning supplies.
Standing up her looked around. The cabin, or small farm house, was a dump. There was furniture everywhere, boards on the floor were rotten. Walls were written on, holes in the ceiling. It looked like it would fall apart at any second. There was paint missing on every wall as every item. Window were dirty and stained. The worse part of it all, by the time of decay on all the furniture and floors, it was like this before the end.
Nate moved to the living room, carrying his axe. He saw couches upturned, stuffing missing. Matches and cigerete buts covered the floor. A broken TV sat in the far corner, old with rabbit ears still on top. There were pictures of animals and hunting memorabilia all over the walls. Seems this place was used as a huntig cabin for the woods nearby, seems they got lucky, if they found anything. Outside he didn't see any oter buildig, no farm equipment, or barn, or shed. There wasn't even a car. He did see a few trees, rotten fruit beneath them.
Across from where he stood was a message, burned into the wall. It read:
"Max, Lester and I wen't North. Gonna go to Washington, get us in an army Bunker. Buck."
Nate stsred at it and read it outloud. "Hykeem, come look at this," he called to his friend, "the owners left a note for some one."
Hykeem had been searching under a kings size bed in what he figured was the owners bedroom. He didn't find anything of sheer importance so when Nate called for his he quickly jumped uup from the ground and walked to where his friend stood observing the wall.
He quickly read over the short message before slowly going over it again. "Well if whoever this was intended for didn't make there way back then I don't know what to tell you." Hykeem looked over at his Nate. "what are you thinking?"
As Hykeem waited for Nates reply he scavenged around the small room finding afew cases of ammo and an unopened box.
"I don't know what to make of it," Nate said, "if someone did make it back then where are they? The Walker wasn't decayed enough for it to be the person the note was for. But if you did come back and saw that note, would you leave all that ammo and food," he asked, "I sure as hell wouldn't. Way I see it is that, either the guy didn't make it back and is still out there not knowing where his brother is. That's a little depressing. Or the guy did come back, but this isn't his stuff. Some one else was here after him. They were the one who left the food and the bullets. It could have even been the Walker behind the door. But if he died, then what killed him."
He looked at his friend, "what I'm saying is we should keep our eyes open. Sonething had to turn the Walker behind the door. He didn't kill himself, cause he wasn't hanging, and didn't put a bullet in his head. So what the hell killed him and wasn't in there with him in the locked room. The Walker in the room was fresh, barely decayed. So all this happened recently."
"What in the box," he said pointing it out. "You know if these houses had a cellar or not?"
Veran listened to the two other guys talking. He heard them talk about thinking that Hykeen had seen the most. It may be true but Hykeen had stayed in the camp longer then he had himself. It had only been a couple of days from when he got there to when they left and it was almost the longest he had ever spent in one spot. He had traveled all over this shitty world. He had even been out on the ocean of a while and even out there you would run into the occasional walker. Or floater in that case.
His scientific mind analyzed their later discussion of whether they would ever defeat these things and he was sure they would. Though it appeared to be slow the walkers had to be starving. Even those that ate regularly at the beggining wouldn't be doing so now, assuming that they even had a way of processing the food that they had been eating. Eventually they would starve to death. He was sure of that. If they could create strongholds, secure some of their culture, then eventually humanity would come back. He wanted to make sure that when it did that they were better then they had been before. They needed to learn from the past so that they didn't repeat it.
The traps hadn't take long to set but he doubted they would catch anything before they left. It would take some time. It was odd to actually have a trap set for more then a night.
When Nate mentioned guarding the truck he nodded to the other man.
Hykeem nodded his head as Nate finished speaking. "what I'm saying is we should keep our eyes open. Sonething had to turn the Walker behind the door. He didn't kill himself, cause he wasn't hanging, and didn't put a bullet in his head. So what the hell killed him and wasn't in there with him in the locked room. The Walker in the room was fresh, barely decayed. So all this happened recently." The man had been right. Something had to have killed the walker and hopefully whatever it was it wasn't anywhere nearby.
Hykeem stepped back opening the small box to reavel nothing more than an snow globe when Nate asked what was in it. "Just this." Hykeem spoke annoyed as he tossed the snow globe to his friend as he made his way towards the exit of the house. " Well should we continue searching or move on?"
"I'll put the food in my bag and we can move on," Nate said walking back to the kitchen. He heard a sound outside and rushed for his axe. Swinging it up Nate walked back to Hykeem. "Think we have company, I heard movement outside." Nate walked to window to look out it, "I don't see anything. No people, Walkers, or animal. I don't even hear anything anymore."
Nate moved back and started shoving the items they found into his pack. Once in he zipped it up and slung it back on. "We should get out of here," Nate said picking up the rifel, "we have a little bit of food, let's call it a win and head back." He looked out the window again, but still heard nothing.
Then he heard it. A gunshot rang out and came through the window. It broke the glas and went over Nates shoulder. Hitting the wall behind him. It splintered as it went through and Nate ducked behind the counter.
"Get down," he yelled, "I didn't see where it came from. I don't know how many are out there. There could be more than one."
Hykeem ducked down behind a small counter covering his head as a bullet eased through one of the rooms windows and barely past his friends shoulder. "Damn who was that" Hykeem spoke with a little laugh trying to catch his breath. "I didn't see where it came from. I don't know how many are out there. There could be more than one." More than one Hykeem thought to himself well he picked a great day to go hunting. Hopefully his only kill wouldn't be him taking the life of another survivor but who would know.
Once the first round of gunfire stopped Hykeem stood a little only revealing his eyes trying to scout out his attackers. It took him a little while but when he spotted the first one he lifted his scoped rifle placing a warning shot to the side of the mans head. Hopefully that would be the only shot he needed to take.
Nate watched his friend duck down as he kept low along the counters. Hykeem popped up and fired a shot, Nate didn't see at who, or if his friend even hit him.
After the shot rang out Nate moved towards his friends side. "Did you get him," he asked, "how many did you see?" Nate peered up and qucikly ducked back down.
Antoher shot went out and the another from another side. Shot after shot came through windows and walls, leaving only minutes between shots.
"Crap what have we go ourselves in to," Nate aske as he looked towards the door.
He watched as a bottle sailed through the window in the living room. It had a rag in it, lit on fire. As the bottle hit the ground fire erupted aroud it. The floor and walls caught fire, followed by the furniture.
Nate moved farther away to the other cabinets. He clutched his rifel, could already feel the heat as more shots rang out.
Hykeem looked back at Nate as his first warning shot hit the tree."Did you get him, how many did you see?" Hykeen lowered his gun wiping his face before he replied to his pal. "I took a warning shot at the first one." Hykeem paused for a short moment thinking about how to answer the next question while bullets flew into the room.
He lifted his gun up behind him blind firing right before he answered. "I only spotted one but by the look of how many bullets their firin there's more than one." As Hykeem spoke a sloppy molotov flew through the window lighting the small building on fire. "Damnmit." Hykeem paused to see if there was another way out. Not spotting one he looked over at Nate. "We've got to go out this way hands up and hopefully they won't shoot. Hopefully they haven't found the pirate. If they haven't then maybe he'll have heard whats going onand will come to save us."
Hykeem walked slowly to the room indow before yelling out to the people outside of the building. "Were coming out hands up. Don't shoot." Hykeem had never been surrounded like this before nor had he ever begged for his life like this although if it came to it. He would let them take his life before Nate's. Nate had something worth living for and Hykeem something worth dieing for if need be.After yelling to the people Hykeem walked out of the burning the building his hands up and rifle to his side.
Nate nodded at his friend and watched the fire crawl towards them. He could feel the heat, causing him to sweat. He pressed himself against the counter as more bullets came through. The shooting would attract the dead, so what evere their plan was they best hurry. Nate listened to his friend explain what the were going to do and nodded in agreement.
"Alright. So out there, hands up, got it," Nate said as he slowly stood, "if I get an oppourtunity I'll distract them and you run. I can't run on my leg, but you're fast. You get out of here, grab the truck and go back. Gather Dannie and Sterling and come back here. I'll leave a trail I they move me someplace. If not then we'll be here. Now let's just hope they let us go."
Nate didn't give his friend time to answer instead stepped out with his hands up. He eyed his friend and stood before the burning house. It was silent, no movement, no shots, nothing. Instead just birds chirping and the wind picking up. Nate stood there in the opening, hands in the air. His Axe was on the holder in his back, his rifel inside. He was defenseless for their one being.
From the clearing in front of them five men stepped out. They all looked young, younger than Nate. All had hoodies and a mask covering their mouths. The on in the centre stepped forward, he wore red while the others black.
"Alright don't move," the ring leader said, "we have three more men in the trees, they won't hesitate to kill you. Now hand over everything you have, and you can leave. We won't shoot you, and we get your supplies, win win."
By the looks of it both Hykeem and Nate were fucked. The men had them surrounded with no chance of escape. Hykeem listened as the only man in red or who he figured was the leader stepped forward and began to talk. Hykeem listened to the man who had suddenly began demanding a lot. Words that would most likely get him and his friend killed popping into his mind. "Where's that damn Pirate when you need him?" The man mumbled to himself hesitating to through he favorite Rifle into the pile of demaned goods.
As Hykeem did what was asked he began thinking silently and to himself. Maybe someone in the group would notice the smoke from the burning building or Veran would have at least heard the gun shots. There had been more than one and Hykeem would surely not allow random fird like that if the two where hunting. As Hykeem thought he looked up into the trees spotting the three scouts who where on the side of the enemy. Hykeem wasn't going to try anything stupid but he wanted to know where the bullets would come from if the men begwn once again firing.
Nate complied to the people, slinking off his pack and setting it before him. The straps and snaps buckled as he threw it down. Shortly after he pulled off his axe and tossed it on the pile. Slowly Nate looked at the raiders, the guns from the four closest and three in the trees still on them. Nate hear Hykeem throw off his supplies and turned to look at him. His friend mumbled somethig, but he couldn't hear what.
"Axe holster too," Ring leader said, crossing his arms, "come on, all of it. You too shifty. Any knives in your boots, ammo, all of it."
Nate undid his holster and placed it on the pile. Two men in black rushed forward and picked up the supplies. One took the rifel and the packs, the other Nate's axe.
"Pretty boy where's your gun," Ring leader spoke again behind his mask.
"It was inside, the fire. Extra ammo was in the pack," Nate said pointing down to it.
"Okay, next step. Belts, boots, jackets, and hats. Outer shirts and any chains, gloves and glasses," the Ring leader ordered.
Nate looked to his friend and pulled off his belt along with his knife holster Attached to it. He then kicked off his boots and pulled off his cap. When he was done Nate remors his sweater and turned to Hykeem. They were going to die, he knew it.
"Would you like me to hand over my dead mother's corspe also?" Hykeem asked the ringleader or the group as he demanded grabbgive up everything they had. Hykeem looked over at his friend watching as he slipped of his belt before pulling off his boots and cap. Why hadn't Nate been hesitant Hykeem thought to himself. Shit he surely would be. The young man wasn't one for being forced to do anything and now he was being forced to give up the only valuables he had. This was surely something new.
After Nate finished Hykeem slipped off his belt and boots and threw them into the pile before throwing in the knife he grabbed earlier. Once ffinished with that the lad took off his leather jacket and a black beanie throwing hem both in the pile. "Sorry I don't wear jewelry! " With that Hykeem stood silently waiting for the leaders next demand.
The leader watched them, a determined look in his eyes. When Nate had listneed it Hykeem was hesitant he glared. The ring leader just let out a sigh, his hand on his hips, "yeah, if you have your dead mothes corpse we'll take that too," he sneered. "We didn't want trouble, Gave you a warning shot. Now, well now we are angry. You see. We only want what we don't have, what we can use. Shoes get holes, you boots should fit someone. Belt's are useful. These jackets." The ring leader pulled on the leather jacket, "they add protection and warmth at night. Your caps on the other hand, just for fun. I've always liked beanies and caps. Who doesn't?"
Nate didn't want to just give up, but the few items didn't out weigh their lives. They could spare them, find more. These raiders, they were serious. If they didn't listen then they would die. The ringleader had a look on him, determined, crazy. It was clear they had done this before, all the other raiders clothing a size to big or to small. Nate looked at all of them, and then his friend.
"What now," Nate asked turning his attention back to the ringleader.
The ringleader spoke, clearing his throat. "Now, now we kill you." The others all raised their guns, aiming down at them. "On three," the ringleader spoke.
Jacob dragged his hip axe across the neck of the last man in the trees, then stuck it in his head. He let him fall, blood pooling around the body as it hit the ground. Three in the trees, five in the field. Two guys being held hostage, seemed down on their luck. He watched as the other five all raised their rifles, aiming down at the other men.
"Should we help them," he asked looking to the empty save next to him.
He then turned the other way, "I think we should. They would be useful later. They may have more with them. We get to kill the punk raiders anyway," he answered himself.
"Good then, let's do it."
Jacob readied his rifel, aiming it at the five assailants. He watched the one in red, counting down. Then he pulled the trigger. A shot went out and hit the ringleader in the head. The man dropped before he even got to three, blood leaking from his head. The other four scampered back, and Jacob squeezed the trigger four more times, dropping each one as he had the first.
Slowly he stepped out from the clearing, his blue shirt blowing behind him as he ran up to the two young men. "Don't shoot, I'm on your side," he said calmly, "you should get dressed, get ready to leave." He threw down a bundle from his back, three guns wrapped in a blanket. "These were the weapons of the ones in the trees. Grab all you can and let's go. I can take us someplace safe if you don't have one."
Before Hykeem could carry out a small plan he had formed in his mind as the ringleader counted down the last seconds till what would be the lads death a shot rang loud from not far from where Hykeem and Nate stood startling the group. The men each stepping back postioning themselves for death. Before a bullet crashed through each of their heads before the motionless bodies fell to the ground.
After each of the men were dead a man walked from within the woods a sack and rifle in his hands. "you should get dressed, get ready to leave." Hykeem listened to the man who imdeiatly began giving orders before dropping the sack of rifles he carried with him. "These were the weapons of the ones in the trees. Grab all you can and let's go. I can take us someplace safe if you don't have one." Hykeem placed on his gear picking up his own rifle before looking the man in the eyes. "Thanks for saving us and all but were good on a safe place. " With that Hykeem looked at Nate hoping he would agree.
Nate hear the shot and watched the ring leader fall. Then he heard four more, taking down the other men and women. Nate ducked down, expecting shots to come from the ones in the trees, but there were none.
A lone man stepped out and spoke to them. He dropped down rifles and told them to get dressed. Nate listened, pulling back on his boots, belt and jacket. He grabbed his axe and strap, and along with his cap gathered all his gear. When he was done he grabbed two rifles, one from the pile, another from one of the other Raiders who died before them.
"Thank you," Nate spoke looking at the man, "we have a safe place already. Let us repay you. Give you a meal. You don't have to stay but it's the least I can do. We have to make it up to you, you saved our lives."
Jacob waited for the two men to gather up all there belongings and get ready. Once they were he wrapped up the remaining rifels in his bundle and picked it up under his arm. He looked at the men, leaving the dead bodies be, only removing all the weapons and ammo. Both men said they had a safe place, but only the younger looking one suggested he go back with them.
"We can go with them?"
"Of course we can."
He looked at the two men, a small smile. "Thank you. I'm honoured." He said looking them once over. "I couldn't let you two get hurt. I'm sorry if I startled you. If you're group will have me, I'll stay."
The younger man nodded and then set off back to the road. Jacob followed, assuming the other man was behind them. When they reached the truck the younger man spoke. "Alright, let's get going. Throw all out bags in the back and everybody in. We need to leave, walkers would have heard the shot, they will be coming. If they had more men we need to be gone."
Jacob climbed in the back after the other three men, looking at the pirate and the other man. The younger man climbed into the truck last and started it. He set off down the road, heading away from the Fire.
