Mia stood there in the main room as everyone fanned out and went their own ways. Her arm still in the make shift sling, she felt almost useless. She walked to the door and stared out as Nate and Hy unloaded stuff from the truck. She stepped out next to Veran on the porch. She glanced at him and raised a brow,"rough night?" She smirked at him, then looked at Nate and Hy," hey , you two, before you run off, mind taking these two boxes into the cabin and placing them on the table for me? I think these two are some of the med supplies I've found and took from the lake." She grinned at Nate," less you want me lifting it myself." She knew he would not want her doing that.
She would separate the stuff and go through it for Liz to take up into the loft.
When Nate came close , she smiled and kissed him," you all be careful, don't come back and make me have to use any of this,ok?" She glanced at Hy," hey you guys come across any hand size, smooth rocks down near the river, bring it back, ok?" Liz wanted a pestle and mortar, maybe they could make one.
Hykeem smiled as Mia looked at him. He would do anything for her and Nate as much as they had sacrificed. He walked over to one of the boxes lifting it up and pushing it against his chest. It was a bit heavier than he thought it would be but he carried it with no problem. He walked up the stairs and into the cabin and to the table where he placed the box. After putting the box down he gave his arms a little wiggle and flexed his muscles. He didnt want to look weak in front of the people who just proclaimed him leader of the hunt.
What would that make him look like? He walked back outside grabbing the other box before Nate. He didn't want his friend to have to continue putting a lot of pressure on his leg even though Nate didn't seem to care as much as before. He again walked back into the cabin placing the box on the table before walking back out.
"Well there you go Mrs.Shaw your boxes are on the table awaiting your arrival! Now as for a hand size, smooth rock if we find one we'll be sure to bring it back. Wouldn't want Liz to have to go and get one herself leaving sterling all alone!"
He spoke with little sarcasm in his voice trying to but not fully hiding that fact that he didn't think Liz cared about anything other than sterling. He hoped the others didn't think anything of what he had said. The group already had enough problems with everything else going on and he didn't want to be the cause of another.
Nate looked at Mia when she came out. He smirked to himself, "of course, anything for the pretty lady," he said with a laugh. He walked forward an saw Hykeem grab the first box. As Nate climed the steps he looked at Mia and reached for the second. Before he could grab it Hykeem did and carried that one inside as well, "thanks," he said to his friends as he stepped toward Mia.
Nate wrapped a hand around her waste. He smiled as she kissed him and kissed her back. "We'll be safe," he said letting go, "promise." He turned and walked back down the steps. "Flat rock, got it."
Mia smiled at Hy, she knew what he was doing. She knew he was helping out Nate and she loved him for that. As he came back and went past, calling her Mrs.Shaw, she grinned at him," thanks ,Hy! Take care of him." She smiled and patted Hykeems arm.
Nate came up to her and kisses her. She blushed at that. She wasn't one to show a lot of public affection. " bring back something good." She grinned and then gave a soft sigh as she watched them get in the truck. Slowly she went back inside to the table," hey, Liz, I got the guys to bring in the boxes of what supplies we have,if you wanna come take. Look." She opened the box and started pulling things out with one arm.
The picking of berries continued until there was little to none left on the bush. He patiently listened to Lyndsie explain her past jobs, impressive. Racer and a promotional model? Better than what he could've done. Semi-professional soccer looked like making a coffee compared to what she did. Emre stood up fully again, giving a few glances around him to see if there was anything else in the area. Nothing looked too close to them, but the woods were damn big, they'd just move around a bit and probably find some more food. "You did all of that? I only played for a semi-professional soccer and played once a week" he gave a small chuckle. He walked further into a direction that led to taller trees and Les sunlight, more dangerous. He waved his hand behind him to make sure Lyndsie would follow.
He saw another bush of berries and began to pick them. This would certainly be a repeated... And boring process. A few had gone bad, but he obviously left those, didn't want to be given bad food. Although, food was scarce, most people would probably eat the bad berries, better than biter brains. "Well, however long you stay with us, I hope you enjoy it and-" the sound of a rustling bush cut him off. As far as he knew, no one else was suppose to be here. So either another survivor had shown up, Lyndsie was waiting to ambush the group or there was biters in the area. He didn't really know which one to think was true first, all were possible. "Did you hear that?" he said to Lyndsie, but didn't look at her. He pulled out his hatchet and prepared for anything.
While looking around for anything, a growl could be heard. Well, it answered his question as to what or who it was and he guessed that humans hadn't learnt how to growl properly yet. His eyes met with that of a mouldy fleshed, blood pouring biter only about 10 feet away. Emre gripped his hatchet tighter and prepared to take on the beast, possibly along with a few of it's friends.
Lyndsie followed Emre as he talked about what he had to do before things went to Hell as well, chuckling a bit as she seemed to find camaraderie in the fact they were both athletes in some form or fashion before she, along with him, heard the sound of leaves and twigs snapping, and the bushes rustling nearby. Quickly, she ducked down slightly with her lead pipe in her hands, but she never knew how much help she'd be; she never had to directly confront these things before, she had to run more than fight. It was a wonder how she avoided bandits and herds altogether, but if she had to fight, she'd try her best to do so...that IS how experience is gained, is it not? "So, uh..any tips for fighting these things? I get you can kill them, but is it to the head? Any particular way to go about it?", she asked Emre in a whisper only he could hear. Of course it was a dumb question, but she wanted to confirm so she wouldn't mess up!
The creature saw Emre, but hesitated for some reason. It's dead white eyes just staring at him. There was a lot of blood in his mouth, suggesting that he had eaten something nearby, hopefully no one back at the cabin. Lyndsie asked if he knew how to kill the biters. Well, she hadn't done it before and needed teaching. There was obviously a good technique to use against them, but they didn't have the time to do a run down of what to do specifically. He just stared at the biter and spoke over to Lyndsie. "hit in the head. Hard as ya can" he said bringing his arm that carried the hatchet up. He charge at the beast and slammed the blade of it down into his head, killing it instantly. Blood spattered everywhere, including onto Emre.
After Emre had killed it, he could hear the rest of them. They must've heard the noises or caught the scent of blood. He readied his hatchet, looking over to Lyndsie. "We're gonna have to fight our way out of here, then we'll get back to the cabin".
Lyndsie had to use her willpower to keep from upchucking at the sight of the zombie's insides and brains, the latter along with blood as Emre practically cut into it with a hatchet, and nodded when he told her that it took a single, hard hit to the head to down them. But wait...would blood objects work? She noticed the weapon Emre was using to do the job was bladed, and so it penetrated and cut easily, but what about her lead pipe? She was too interested in how to defend herself, that she almost forgot that she had a sheathed knife on her person and quietly backed up a bit with her lead pipe raised, ready to give a rather heavy swing if needed.
Liz heard what Hykeem said and she looked at him, flashing a sarcastic smile. As she finished placing things she could find in the places she believed they needed to go, she moved towards the boxes.
"Oh don't worry. I care about others, but a girl has to have her priorities."
She softened her smile a bit as she helped with the boxes. As Mia started digging in, she looked at the arm in the sling and wondered what happened to her.
"What happened to your arm?"
She knew anything could happen out in the open, but at least things weren't worse for her, like they were for Sterling. She knew Mia couldn't do any heaving lifting with that bad arm, so she started to pull out some of the items for her in the box. She wanted to ask more questions of Mia but she didn't want to seem too intrusive. She knew how it felt when someone was asking too many questions.
"Did you leave Colorado because of Nate? He seemed to be the only one sticking up for Sterling and DannieLynn."
Mia smiled at Liz, " my shoulder, I got shot. It was a through and through, but shoulder is still sore" Mia looked over the IV bags and tubing she had collected. Stuff she smuggled out of Bear Lake. She glanced over at Liz," I ask myself that same question. " a sigh left her lips and she ran a hand through her hair," yea, Nate, he is a sweet guy, and he stood up for all of them when no one else was and they turned on him." Mia looked away and wiped her eyes." They changed, weren't the people I knew and trusted. Those people would t have doe that to Nate, to their own." She glanced at Liz," um , so we gonna put most of this upstairs?"
Liz slowed down her pace of pulling things out of the box as Mia reminisced about Bear Lake. She barely knew the people, having only been let in a few weeks prior to the 'incident' that brought her together with Sterling.
"Well, we can both be thankful that their true colors were seen. They kept both Nate and Sterling alive, so that's something, right?"
She was always the optimist trying to figure out the best way to look at situations. She was used to floating between groups, not really getting to know people or even showing her true colors until an emergency arose and in the case of Sterling and Dannie, that emergency was clear and present. The doctor at the camp was probably drunk and passed out while the new guy had to come and take over. Hell, if it weren't for her and Mia, the pair would probably be dead.
She could tell the entire situation was a thorn in Mia's side, a pain that was worse then the gunshot wound to the shoulder. Maybe the subject should change as not to aggravate any further memories...or that wound in her shoulder. "I can carry stuff up. Do you want me to take a look at your shoulder?"
As Liz spoke about Nate and Sterling being alive,Mia nodded. She didn't wanna talk about the lake or its people anymore. She smiled at Liz as she said she would carry the stuff upstairs.
" thanks, I am not much good for that right now."
She lifted a few gauze pads in her had as Liz mentioned looking at her shoulder," you read my mind. I was gonna have Nate change the dressing this morning, but we sorta got side tracked with everyone wanting to lay out a chore plan and all that." She held the pads out to Loz and sat Dow. At one of the table chairs. The sling was tied an she tried to get it loose with one hand." I walked Veran through stitching me up, so it shouldn't be too bad, but I have noticed some oozing."
Liz left the heavy lifting behind as she moved to the table with Mia. She helped her remove the sling and slowly started to unwrap the bandages that were around her shoulder. She could see the dried blood and yellowish stain that was starting to seep through. It was time to change the dressings, that much was certain.
"Yea, sorry I didn't really introduce myself back at the Settlement. I wanted to see what people were like before I came forward, you know?"
She looked over the wound and saw the rather ragged looking stitches that were left behind. There were some openings that were allowing for infection to settle in and she could see inflammation around the exposed tissue. It wasn't much, but it was enough that could cause damage to the shoulder, or worse.
"He did okay with the stitches, but you're getting an infection. Were you able to get some antibiotics? If not, I'll have you take Sterling's share that he has left. I think his wound is healed up enough that he won't need them anymore."
She wanted to clean out the wound, but would need some fresh water in order to do it. She looked at Hykeem who seemed to be awaiting his next orders while scoping out the house.
"Hey, uh..." She wasn't sure of his name, but he seemed to be the only one standing close enough to help. "Can you get some water? I need to clean out her wound."
She handed a fresh gauze to Mia while she went through the boxes looking for some antiseptic or rubbing alcohol she could use.
Mia sat silent while she took off the dressing and checked the wound, "That is okay, I understand." She listened as she spoke , "Well, there should be some rubbing alcohol in one of these boxes. I took some pills from the Lake, but I don't know exactly what I got, I was in a bit of a hurry." She pushed one of the larger boxes over to Liz, 'I think in a small box in there, should be." She sat bacn and held the gauze Liz had given her.
Elizabeth looked over her shoulder to see that Hykeem was gone. He was standing there a second ago and she thought he was pretty quiet for a guy who seemed to make a bit of noise back at the Settlement. Either way, she would take care of cleaning up the wound. She went into the kitchen and was going through some drawers until she came across a dish towel that was folded in a drawer that had many of them. That would do.
It took a bit of rummaging to find the rubbing alcohol and when she did, she was not terribly generous with it. Just enough to clean the wound and that would be it. They would have to use everything sparingly until they could find more supplies from homes and stores.
"So where are you from? Before all..this. Ya know."
She knew Mia already knew it would sting when she put the compress against her shoulder to start to eat away at infected skin. She could only imagine how it would burn at this point without any numbing agent, but if Sterling could pull through a gunshot wound with little aid of modern medicine, then Mia could pull through this.
Mia sucked in a sharp breath as the tag was placed on the area. She smirked , she knew Liz was distracting her, Utah, been a hospital nurse for the last 7,but 9 total, right out of college I did the nursing home thing for a couple years." She spoke through clenched teeth," you? How long?" Damn, this bitch was burning now, but she knew it needed to be done, or she would be in a far worse fate than a little pain.
Mia glanced at Liz," we should see what all are in these bathroom, I know there is one upstairs, not sure about down her."
Liz knew the burning would be quite righteous as she dabbed the rubbing alcohol against the infected skin. When she was done, she lightly blew on the wound to help cool down the burning sensation. It was a trick her mother taught her when she was a child with every scrape and cut that came with childhood.
"Sacramento. I was a nurse for about three years. I did physical therapy part time outside of nursing. I worked at the hospital. Long hours at school, long hours working at night."
Although she would leave out exactly where she was working at night to pay for school. It was none of anyone's business, especially Sterling's. She had a feeling that if he found out, he would be gone in a heartbeat.
"You're right. Raid everything we can get. I was thinking about heading over to a few more houses around here to see what I can find. Maybe Nate will come with me? I know Sterling would rather go, but you know as well as I do he needs to stay put for now. Maybe you can convince him better then I can. He knows how I feel about him being out and about as it is."
Mia just nodded as Liz spoke about work and school and long hours. She knew all to well exactly how it was. She smiled as she felt Liz blow over her wound. It was something she had experienced as a child and had done several times while working.
She glanced over when Liz spoke about checking place close to the cabin for supplies. She wanted to take Nate with her. For a split second she felt a little panic rise in her, but she pushed it down. Nate was strong and could handle himself. She didn't want anything to happen to him. Mia knew she had gotten too close, right then. She wanted to tell Liz no, wanted to keep ,her man, safe. Really though, there was no safe in this world, not now..
Mia understood Lizs concern for Sterling," you just be careful, you take care of Natw and I will watch Sterling while you're gone. Maybe we get Hy to go too, that will probably put Sterling at more ease about it." Safety in numbers and all , she knew it would her.
Liz finished up taking care of the wound on Mia's arm, patching her back up with clean gauze and medical tape as she sat back. "That sounds like a square enough deal. Although, where are Nate and Hykeem? They should be back by now, right? I mean, I would hope they didn't get too far."
She looked towards the windows as she saw the sunlight pressing down between the tall trees. She felt safe here, but she knew safety wasn't there. It never was. Danger was everywhere, no matter how safe you thought you could be. There were also people who were bigger and badder and could take what you wanted. She was also worried about Dannie and Sterling. He wanted to go with her to check things out and establish a perimeter around the cabin. "Do you think I should go try to find them?"

Jake was the first one to walk back inside the camp. “Honey’s I’m home.” He joked as he had no clue where everyone was. It was then that he noticed Mia and Liz. “Hey girls.” He said with a smile. “So Dale and I, found something.” He joked as he pointed at the rest, who were still walking closer.
“No serious, they were being chased by walkers and they are pretty young, I couldn’t leave them there.” Jake said in a more serious tone. “I think they both been through a lot.” He added with a little sadness in his voice. “Anyways I know I’m not the only person to decide, so I guess we’ll have to vote again.” He said.
Then he smiled again. “Anyways how are things here?”
