It took almost an entire day to get from Kansas to Blue Ridge, but it was well worth the drive. Driving across country was a sight to behold, even if the luxury of being tourists wasn't really there. There was no place to stop and eat, no places to really admire and take pictures of and no sense of 'getting away'. They had all the time in the world but getting away meant from hordes and groups of bandits.
It didn't take too long to find a cabin off a mountain pass road right off the large, Toccoa river that seemed to cut right through the mountain passes. Many of them were abandoned or walled off. There were all shapes and sizes of cabins and it took them late into the night to find one that had only a few walkers and no other survivors inside. The one they finally settled at three bedrooms, several beds and couches and a fire pit outside. It was a long drive and late into the night and when the sun rose the next day, they could establish where they were using Nate's maps and figure out how to split up the groups to go on supply runs and claim their territory.
It had been a long day. First driving for hours on end. Then they searched cabins. Nate was gung-ho through all of it. He pushed on, pushed past the pain in his leg. He knew most of the others couldn't help like he could. He obligated to put his life on the line and help these people.
He was glad when he was finally able to crash into a bed. Nate had taken one of the bedrooms, hoping no one argued it. Mia and him could share, at least until they got tired of each others company. He didn't know who else took the other rooms or who was on a couch, and at this point he didn't really care. --- Nate awoke in the morning an yawned. He was stiff from all the movement yesterday and ached all down his leg. Reaching out to rub it he stretched his arms. Slipping out of bed he pulled on a loose t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
Slowly he walked out to the main part of the cabin, limping more than he had the day before.
A young, traveling survivor traversed the creeks and grassy patches of the wilderness that is Blue Ridge, GA. A red and white baseball cap with the beak of it lowered enough to keep the Sun from clouding her vision with most of her presumably-long dark brown hair under it to keep it from just hanging freely, and for other reasons. With her evergreen green eyes, she spotted what looks to be the wooden contours of wooden cabins in the distance, blocked partially by trees and the like. With a huff from a long, lonesome walk, she pressed on with careful glances around her for any stalking zombies. Just why did this situation have to exist? She was happily preparing for a big race way back in yesterdayland, and then the next hour after that...death was everywhere, and growing! Her brows furrowed in a slight squint, both from tirelessness and being upset at the situation going on in--presumably--the world before she eventually made her way to the cabins...
Finn was up on the roof of the cabin. Seemed it wasn't the best idea but the solar panels he scavenged had to go somewhere. He had attached himself in a safety harness he scavenged in the early days of the outbreak, never thought when it could come in handy. He also had rappelling gear, for those quick exits that sometimes needed to be done. After he was done screwing in the last bolt to attach the panels, he connected the wiring and went back inside to see if everything was connected well into the inverter system to the house that stood in the basement.
He wasn't an electrician, but he was a good scavenger. Along with the panels, power converter and cables he also had scavenged a book on how to install them. Having followed every instruction to the letter, Finn switched on the power converter. A LED-light indicated that it was now 'charging' and Finn felt victorious.
"Booyah!" Finn shouted in excitement. "Who da man? I'm da man! Finn-Dawg in da hizzie fo shizzie mah nizzie!"
He had no idea where that last part came from. It was probably just the excitement of having accomplished something talking. Finn didn't even like rap music, he was more the punkrock, surf reggae and new-metal kind of guy. He had no desire to be black, or to pretend he was. Not in racial terms of course, it just wasn't Finn's thing.
Finn went back up to the main part of the cabin and saw Nate there. He jumped in one of the seats and relaxed for a moment. He had earned that much. "Well I got those solar panels hooked up!" Finn said. "We should have some power soon. Still wish we had some generators though..."
Finn didn't really know if anyone of them had a generator. He had his own car after all, and he hadn't been with them long enough to see what they were carrying in theirs apart from guns and other necessities.
Hykeem stood over the trunk of his HellCat moving the bags that laid in it to the side. He was looking for his Hunting Rifle. After all they were in the mountains almost surrounded by wildlife. The thought of getting in a good hunt pushed Hykeem harder to find the Rifle.
He pushed the sixth bag to the side before slamming his fist against the car.
"Where the fuck is it"
If they were back in the city the noise the car made after would have most likely drawn the attention of Walkers. That was the good thing about mountains not many Walkers were around nor people. Hykeem shook his hand in pain for a quick second before moving the rest of the bags in the trunk. He gently pushed the last bag over and as if it was magic the rifle was rested gently against the bed of the trunk.
"YES!FUCK YES!"
Finding the rifle almost made Hykeem the happiest man on earth but the meat he and the group would have might just have taken that place. He closed the trunk and walked into the cabin.
"Hey Nate can I borrow the truck? I've been wanting to do some hunting for meat and for the game but this would be a good opportunity. Also I can't drag the carcasses back myself."
Nate looked at the man in the couch. He said the had power, that was the best new he heard since they left. The lake had power, you just took advantage of it. He didn't know this man, but was glad he was here, he wouldn't have even begun to think of getting power here. "Well power's good. We may have to look for generators. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled for one if we go on a run."
Nate saw Hykeem come in and smiled, "think the trucks filled with junk and crap but if you want to help me clear it out you can take it. Don't want to put the carcasses in your car," he asked laughing, "come let's go outside," he said pointig with his chin.
After they stepped outside he smiled. He saw the truck, "whelp let's clean this baby up. I'll wait for Mia to get up, say goodbye, and then we can go hunt. I haven't been in ages, since I was a kid."
It was at this time that the brunette clambered around the corner of one of the cabins...the very cabins not one, but more so other survivors seemed to be staying in. Hell, the definite view of a truck parked nearby only confirmed there was recent and current activity going on here. She saw one of the survivors, a man, on the truck looking for something. It took her a bit to decide whether to try and sneak towards him, or be more cautious but honest about her presence and alert him. She decided to go with option B, and gently tapped the wood of the cabin she was next to with her battered steel pipe, loud enough for those in the cabin and the man on the truck to hear her.
Mia moved around the cabin, having just woke up. Her arm was in a makeshift sling to help keep it immobilized. Her hair was a mess, and she still looked like she needed hours of sleep. She padded across the floor barefoot, looking for the others. Everyone must be up and outside doing stuff. She hated feeling like she was not carrying her weight. She stopped near the front door as she heard voices outside. Her eyes scanned out the window, before she went out onto the porch. It was a nice morning. She saw Nate and Hykeem over at the truck and Finn in his car. What were they doing?
Liz was incredibly thankful when they arrived in Blue Ridge. The drive was fairly uneventful and now Sterling could get the rest he needed in order to heal fully. She had medicines and water for his intake and she was starting to feel tired herself. Together they had slept in one of the beds upstairs and she had given a good argument for why Sterling needed one. He needed to lay down and rest at least for another week, maybe two, to get his strength back. She had a feeling he would protest that fact, but if he tried to get up and do too much, it would only make things worse and he would feel those effects.
She woke up earlier then him and prepared a little mix of medicines that she had in her pack for him to take. A bottle of water and two pills, one an antibiotic and another a neproxin for any pain. She knew after a long trip like that, pain would be a factor all the way down to his bones. She looked out through the window to the dense forest as the sun rose. It was quiet, sans for the commotion Finn was making on the roof as he set up his equipment and Hykeem down at the car. But other then that, there was nothing to be seen except the river and birds that flitted from tree to tree. No walkers, yet, and no raiders, yet.
She looked back at Sterling as he laid peacefully in bed, crossing her arms across her chest and just waiting for him to wake up. Everyone would be waking up soon and that's when they could decide who does what for the group.
Hykeem was following behind Nate climbing onto the back of the truck when a loud noise came from the side of one of the cabins. He quickly turned in the direction of the sound throwing his rifle up and targeting whatever made the noise. A figure was over by a tree and seemed to be the cause of the sound. Hykeem knew the figure wasn't animal nor Walker because it seemed as if it was trying to get their attention. He slowly brought the scoped gun up to his eye placing the target on the figure.
"Human,Obviously smart to not try anything. I think she wants our attention."
Hykeem jumped back down off the truck gesturing for Nate to follow him. He moved a safe distance towards the woman before calling out to her.
"We dont want any trouble. We noticed you were making that noise and figured you wanted our attention. So you've got it."
Hykeem figured that after what had happened at bear lake peace was now the only option. The group didn't need any more wounded than they already had and maybe this woman could be of some help.
"So are you from around these parts?"
He lifted his hand stroking the small beard that he'd begun growing and then looked up in the air. It was a really nice day to hunt but they would have to wait before they could clear the truck and go. The situation at hand was much more important and Hykeem wanted it dealt with while he was still there.
Nate was pulling his axe from the truck when he hear the noise. He quickly held it up ready. His rifle was inside, to far to grab it quickly. From the corner of his eye he saw Mia in the window. He smiled but it quickly faded when Hykeem spoke.
"I'll go around back, see if I can flank her," he said in a hushed tone, but enough for his friend to hear.
He saw him walk up to her and Nate moved along back of the Cabin. He inched along the wall until he got to the side she was on. Slowly he watched her. She looked inncoent enough, but now a days anyone could be. He held his axe up ready to swing if he had to. He was more confident with the axe than he was with a gun. He could swing hard and fast, taking it right to her head.
The woman adjusted the dark blue single-strap backpack she had over her torso as if it had weight in it. The man flanking her unawares would find that all she visibly had on her was a sheathed knife in the back of her pants...pants that were rather thick yet light enough to allow breathing. It had some coloring on it, where white and red were tying for the primary color on this segmented outfit of hers with a slight tinge of dark green in smaller parts, and black for the rest. She kept the steel pipe she had been using to make noise at her front with both hands, where could be seen. It really seemed she didn't want any trouble herself, did she? If she wanted to, she could've snuck up to him and stabbed him in the head with the knife. Regardless, with a bit of shakiness that came with exhaustion and hunger, she slightly huffed her answer to the man calling to her from where the truck is. "No..I'm from far away from here. I did have a car but it ran out of gas, and the gas stations here..they're all dried up. So I've been on-foot for rest of the day."
Hykeem held the rifle steady as the woman talked. By what Hykeem could make of it she was just like he once was alone. The only difference was he was smart enough to have some backup fuel for his vehicle.
He watched the lady as she said what she had to before replying himself.
"We've got a cabin just up there. Maybe you could get some rest there. You seem like you need it."
Hykeem looked at Nate before pointing in the direction of the building.
"There's a group of us so you probably shouldn't try anything. Maybe you could help us with a few things and in return we'll help you."
He smiled at the lady in the cap before lowering his gun and waiting for her next move.
Nate coughed to alert the women of his presence. looking at the women from behind, He poked her back with his axe. "Why don't we just step around front," he said smiling, "we'll let the group as a whole decide if you can stay."
He remained behind her. "Just lower the pipe. We won't take it but let's not keep the bloody pipe in a swinging stance okay?" He walked around beside her.
"My friend is right. We have a group in the cabin. We just came here. But if you agree and cooperate, and if you can help us out I say you're welcome to stay. Afte walking for that long you probably need rest. There's a couch inside. After your fate is decided you can rest. I have no problem in another person joining us, but we are a group and its up to the whole group to decide. If majority votes you can't stay then you move along your way."
Sterling had not really wanted to sleep in the bed but he knew that he needed it and the ability that it gave him to sleep right next to Luz had been enough for him to shut his mouth. He knew that she was likely to try and basically put him on bed rest and he wouldn't have it. He would keep himself safe and not try to push himself too hard but he would rather kill himself then spend another week in bed.
He opened his eyes and saw Liz sitting up watching him. He smiled at her to let her know that yes he was awake. He clutched his side. The night had helped but traveling the long distances had done a number to his body and he hurt. He looked around and saw the pills. He gladly took them, swallowing both with a little of the water and then drinking a little more.
"So how long are you going to try and keep me in this bed?"
He smiled and kissed her quickly. He supposed that she could probably convince him to stay in bed for a while...
The woman let out a slow exhale of relief as she seemed to see that these guys were at least reasonable and not some psychos that would try to shoot her on sight without a reason. She kept her grip on the pipe but at least lowered it to her side while holding it with one hand. She heard what another man behind her said, after stopping a split-second tense that someone or something was behind her, and slowly walked towards the other man with the rifle. Her gaze wandered around as she walked before she was a couple feet from the rifleman, wondering what kind of group they were...it wasn't like she was in one before, after all. "Nice place you've got here..is there someplace I could sit for a bit? Out here is fine, at least."
The sounds of the group escaped Dale as he sat on the same couch as Finn and silently read a book. As Finn plopped down, Dale bounced upwards, but kept his place in the book he was reading. Since they had finally found some steady ground to settle on, he had decided to start reading the book his father had given him, and had been reading it since they had arrived. A moment more had passed from when Finn had sat down, and he decided to take a break from reading. Taking a piece of paper he'd been using as a book mark, he placed it in between the book's pages, and let it hang on the bottom of it to represent that he had stopped reading on the right hand page.
"Why did we have to go further south? Now that spring times here, it's freakin' burning up." Dale questioned Finn rhetorically, and wiped some sweat off his forehead. "We should look into finding some kind of cooling contraption. An air conditioner would take up too much power I'm sure, but maybe a few fans would be alright now that you got power coming in, right?" He leaned forward on the couch as he grabbed a makeshift paper fan and waved it at himself to cool down.
Dannie had woken up at the crack of dawn to start scoping out the area around the cabin they had occupied for the night. She wasn't sure if they were going to stay there, but it was certainly a good place to start. The hills were steep and the roads into most of the cabins were gravel with pavement closer to the homes. From the cabin where they were staying, at the balcony, they could see a smattering of other cabins around the tops of the mountains, but trees were a great barrier that kept neighbors far apart. The others were starting to go about their business with Finn on the roof and Nate tooling around outside. She didn't know what she would find aside from walkers roaming around the properties.
What she did find was a barn that was adjacent to the cabin where they were camped out. Next to the barn was a field that probably once had horses considering she found horse shoes scattered around. There were plenty of tools inside and not a soul to be seen occupying it, dead or alive. There was a long, barbed wire fence that contained the barn and the field they could certainly take advantage of and plenty of barbed wire rolled up inside the barn. She assumed the person who owned the property fixed the fences themselves. The sun was rising and as she came back to the house she happened upon Finn and Dale and offered them a smile. Dale was right about the heat and she was sure it would only get worse.
"At least we have the river close by. I bet this mountain water is still pretty cold. When I was a kid we came in the spring, but we couldn't tube in the river because it was about twenty degrees."
She took a break and caught her breath from going around the property.
"There's a ton of tools in a barn I found. What do you boys think of this place?"
Knowing Hykeem and Nate were outside, Finn didn't react when he heard clanging. The two guys were probably busy setting up something so he didn't pay any attention to it. The kid spoke up about the spring heat and said something about putting fans up. But the electricity from the solar panels they had would nowhere near generate enough electricity for such a thing. They needed a generator anyway to provide electricity all day round for the house and the solar panels were more of a back-up for emergency lighting in case the generators went out.
"Yeah I know kid." Finn said, slightly raising his voice knowing the kid was somewhat deaf. "But we're gonna need generators and gas if we want to place fans around. The solar panels wouldn't last an hour, I just set them up to have a bit of lighting when evening falls. They won't power the entire house."
Still, being cool didn't necessarily meant having some kind of cooling contraption around. Coating the walls with silver paper worked miracles in Finn's house back in Boston during the summer. And isolation would go a long way as well. Finn started thinking about possible solutions while Dannie spoke. She found tools, that was good. The possibilities of securing this house were endless if you knew what to look for.
"It's a well enough place, but Dale's right." Finn answered. "Shelter's no good if we cook in it during the summer or freeze to death in it during the winter. I was thinking; what if we scavenge isolation materials in houses from nearby towns, and plug up every hole and crack in this place? Like, we're gonna board up the windows right? If we put isolation on the window before boarding it up, that'll be one less place the heat and the cold can go through. Sure, it'll be dark in here 24/7 but I'd rather sit in the dark than in the heat or cold."
Finn figured his idea was rather doable. Get to a town, go in a house, up the attic and tear out the isolation there. Then bring it back here and isolate the place. It was an easy job and didn't need that many people either, just the pick-up truck and some cutting and sawing material. "A generator and some gas wouldn't hurt either." Finn continued. "The solar panels are enough to get some emergency lighting going but not even nearly enough to power the entire house."
Liz helped Sterling up a bit so he could take the medications. She would use them sparingly with him, especially the pain medication. He was at the point now that he could recover nicely without the assistance of too much naproxin and they would have to save that for people that may suffer more injuries in the future. She knew that was part of the territory when it came to establishing a new place to live. Be it by a walker, another person or just an injury trying to put up a fence or using tools. She returned the kiss and smiled, knowing he didn't want to be holed up in bed any longer. "Well, I was going to keep you here for a few more weeks, but I have a feeling you're not going to stay put."
She grinned as she said that, pulling back her long hair into a ponytail and tying it back. She wanted to see if her and Mia could establish a little room where they could take care of the wounded and set up whatever medicines they could find.
"Come on then. We should get you moving around a bit, but not too much. If the pain gets to be too much you need to rest. There's a few others downstairs that are already moving around and I thought I heard Dannie talking to someone. I was hoping maybe we could find a pharmacy or store or something nearby where we can load up on some medical equipment. Maybe try to raid a doctors or veterinary clinic somewhere."
She helped him to sit back up although it was really an unnecessary thing for her to do. He would need to build his strength back up on his own and he seemed to be doing pretty good with that. He certainly had more energy after being shot then anyone she had ever seen before. Then again, it was a vital part of surviving now.
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
