Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Ali was the first born of the Shihab children. As the eldest daughter of Lebanese immigrants, Ali was raised with strong ties to the Lebanese culture and faith. In addition, family expectations were high, often reminded to take advantage of an expensive catholic education. Shy and reserved, Ali had a small circle of close friends. Living in the same neighborhood, Ali and her friends studied, ate, and prayed together. When her siblings were born, Ali was entrusted with helping around the house and sharing in the rearing of her siblings.
After high school, Ali began to focus on three goals: stability, growth, and independence. Appropriate developmental milestones, Ali embraced the American idea of strong independent woman. Having found the great outdoors to be a refuge and sanctuary during difficult times, Ali was certain that she wanted to work in a job that kept her in nature's embrace. She completed an Associate's Degree in Environmental Science, which naturally led to an internship and future job with The State of Oregon's Parks and Recreation Division. Affirmed by her experiences with welcoming visitors and educating the public about local nature, Ali was encouraged to complete her education and work full time for the State's Parks and Recreation Division.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Ali just returned from a long weekend with friends in Southern Oregon. She spent the night in her comfortable rental home in Wasco, awakened to a beautiful Oregon sunrise, and driven to the remote Cottonwood State park about 20 minutes away. At the park, she was assigned on routine patrol, which took her out into the remotest edges of the park. While connecting with campers and checking permits and tags, she had turned on the radio, listening to local channels for updates on the growing virus. The infection rate had been rising over the past week. As hysteria began to break out in the major cities, all park rangers and Parks Enforcement Officers were mandated to stay and monitor park safety, in anticipation of an exodus of city dwellers looking to escape the congested and devolving climate of behavior.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Residents of Central and Eastern Oregon were the last to see the walkers of the apocalypse. The hills and rural passes provided a natural defense against the undead wanderers. Human traffic and refugees were abundant in number trying to escape the populated cities, specifically Portland, Salem, and Eugene. Most evacuees set their sights for relocation on Bend or Redmond, leaving the outskirts relatively untouched. The small town of Wasco, about 20 minutes from Cottonwood Canyon Sate Park, remain only a small stop for gas and last minute supplies while moving further East.
The Park Rangers were asked to remain at their posts, most working double shifts as evacuees and survivors set up camps in the park. For several months, Ali was drafted into service of the local Sherriff's office to assist with law and order. Overtime, communities began to form as the larger cities of Bend and Redmond began to experience breakouts.
