Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington
Winter had already begun to prove itself to be utterly harsh in a world without the comforts of being able to just run to town and buy up food and supplies from the grocery store. She had attempted to hunt to help supplement her rations, but without success.
Today it appeared more and more that a storm was coming on, as it had begun to snow more heavily, the winds were picking up, the temperature had dropped drastically, and with visibility becoming more hard. Fortunately she had enough firewood and her supplies should be enough to carry her through the winter, but she couldn’t run scavenger runs into Packwood with this weather.
Alex peered through the window fronting her cabin, out at the storm brewing outside. The winds were howling, giving a haunting feeling, and through the cold hazy atmosphere outside she could just make out the trees alive with motion. Feeding another piece of wood into the stove, she sat back on the couch bundled up with blankets as she sipped tea. Placing her mug next to her M9 resting on the stand beside the couch, and grabbing her watch to check the time. “2137...” she muttered before putting it down and pulling the covers up more as she settled in.
Her thoughts wandered to how everyone else fared, specifically her family and eventually her thoughts turned to Jessica, her lover or former lover, as the two separated to pursue their careers which went in the opposite direction. The relationship was positive and the chemistry between the two was a good mix and it was certain that if their paths ever crossed again, they would certainly reconnect. Her heart ached a bit, as she recalled fond memories together, but deep within she struggled to keep the dark thoughts of what could have happened to her after the world fell apart. Jessica had moved to Boston after being accepted into Harvard Medical School on the complete opposite end of the continent from where Alex was now. Alex eventually slipped into the dream world despite the sound of the wind howling and whipping outside.
For once, it seemed Alex would be getting a peaceful night’s rest, this time no horrors reigned through her dreams. In stead she dreamed of Jessica and her warm personality and her soft touch. But it was not to last as Alex was jolted awake by the sound of a crash through glass and the roaring and howling wind outside. She fumbled for her M9 and leaped off the couch scanning the dimly lit room, she pulled her flashlight from her vest resting next to the stand and flicked on. She could see snow blowing into the room as she slowly followed to the kitchen and the icy cold began to fight the heat of the fire.
As she rounded the corner, she saw a tree limb impales through the kitchen window. “Shit...” she cursed as she set her pistol down on the table and rushed to work to fix the problem. Alex was able to get the branch out of the window and a piece of plywood nailed on over it. It had been a struggle, fighting against the invasive wind, but she got it done. With that taken care of she fed a couple more chunks of wood into the fire and sat back down on the couch and checked her watch again. 0119, 01/01 “what a way to ring in the new year...” Alex sighed as she laid back down to sleep
Come morning, when the storm had subsided she had found the snow level had climbed up more than half the doorway to her cabin. It was going to be a long day clearing it out.
