Highway 12
Outskirts of Mossyrock, Washington
The dreaded feeling and sound of the engine sputtering and pulsating, combined with the low fuel light as the Explorer slowed to a stop just as the engine cut out. “Shit...” Alex cursed. She had hoped to make it closer to Mossyrock, but it wasn’t so. She would have to huff it on foot from here on and hopefully find some gas. She pulled up the map and calculated the distance to Mossyrock and then to Mt. Rainier National Park if she was able to locate fuel or another vehicle.
Her main and overall goal was to make it to Mount Rainier National Park, there she knew there were some fairly isolated Cabins which would make for a decent and safe shelter away from the affected populated areas where the infected would be.
Alex heaved a sigh before folding up the map and putting it away. Stepping out of the Explorer, she grabbed her M4 and got her pack and the gas can out from the back. She grabbed 4 spare M4 magazines and stuffed them in her mag pouches on her plate carrier before closing the and locking up the Explorer. “Just like old times...” she muttered as she started out down the road. If she didn’t find gas or another ride she’d probably have to huff it all the way to Mt. Rainier.
In the distance the low rumble of thunder sounded, and she noticed that there were storm clouds off in the distance. “Well... it ain’t training if it ain’t raining..” as she kept her pace and continued down the road.
Approximately 20 minutes later, Alex had just entered the small town. Keeping her M4 in the low ready, she made her way down the Main Street. It was eerie and calm, the air was cold and moist and she could tell that rain storm was getting closer as the sky above was darkened by Blackish grey clouds. Not a soul around nor any signs of infected aside from a few abandoned vehicles here and there. Down the road in the distance she saw a sign for a gas station and auto body and repair shop
As she got closer, she saw that it looked virtually untouched, unlike the truck stop from yesterday. This caused her to put her guard up more as someone could be holding out. This whole town seemed a bit unusual. Not a single sign of infected or survivors, it was as if the town had just been abandoned over night.
Alex half expected at any moment someone or something was going to jump out on her as she neared the doors to the store, but to her surprise there was no one. The store was open and unlocked. After searching and clearing the building and most of the store, she was even more perplexed, the food and merchandise hadn’t been touched. No one had been here since and there was still no sign of what happened.
She made her way to the auto Garage in the back of the property. It’s doors were closed and looked as if they had been closed and secured for the day. Peering through the window on the top half of door to the office she turned the door knob, but it was locked. Slinging her M4 across her chest, she drew her Baton without extending it. Just as she was about to attempt to break the glass, a little shiny silver object caught here eye on the ground and low and behold, a little silver key was sticking out from the welcome mat. “Hmm..” she put her baton away and scooped up the key and tested it on the lock and just like that it worked.
As she entered the office and waiting area of the shop, her eyes drifted to the window surveying the interior of the garage itself and it was like love at first sight. Making her way to the door to the work area of the garage, her eyes were fixed on the the Dark Blue 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser. Now here was a vehicle made for the an expedition in the apocalypse and then some. This particular one was even geared for it with cargo roof racks with light bars facing on all sides of the vehicle, jerry can rack on the back next to the spare tire, heavy duty front bumper with a winch and a light bar, snorkel for fording through water, CB Radio, Rugged all terrain tires, well this was definitely someone’s toy for sure and now it was Alex’s. “Who said you can’t have nice things in the end of the world.” As a big grin crossed her face.
Not long after finding the keys to the Land Cruiser, she soon learned that it had been converted from it’s gas engine to a Fuso Diesel engine and best of all it had a full tank. Taking the empty yellow jerry cans from its rack, she proceeded to siphon and fill them up using the diesel from the gas station. She started it up without fail and pulled up to the front of the gas station and Loading up everything she had plus what food and supplies she salvaged from the little store.
A loud crack and rumble sounded as the storm was brewing nearer. That was when she heard the sound of chains and pounding near by. Following the sounds to it’s source at a church, she found the answer to the mystery.
Front doors to the church were chained and secured and the dead inside were straining the chains attempting to get out. On the front steps lay the body of a well dressed man with a bite wound on his forearm, a gunshot wound to the head and a gun in his hand, his identity unknown and the reason he locked the townspeople in the church was unknown, but if she had to guess it would be that everyone had been infected.
Alex backed away, not wanting to investigate further or risk inadvertently letting loose the horde. She didn’t notice the one infected approaching from behind until it kicked a can. Alex felt her heart skip a beat as she spun around and raised her Rifle. It was definitely one of the dead, a Local cop. She squeezed the trigger and laid him to rest, but the shot riled up the many dead ones in the church.
Alex didn’t stick around to wait for them to burst the chains, she high tailed it back to the Land Cruiser, hopped in and started it up just as the drops began to fall as she headed back to the Explorer to pick up the supplies she left.
