Before the outbreak:
After serving 7 years as a communications sergeant, Samuel returned to his home town deep in the mountains of western Maryland to be closer to his family. While in the military Samuel served multiple tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and versions other locations. As fate would have it, Travis Johnson, the mayor of Cumberland, Maryland and an old high school friend was able to ensure that Samuel would be accepted into the local police academy.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day:
Samuel was fresh out of the academy and working on the night shift as a K-9 unit with his supervisor, Don grove. It was quiet just like any other night with only a few minor traffic stop. The following morning near the end of their shift a call came in that there was a major traffic accident about three miles out on westbound I-68. When Don and Samuel arrived on scene it was much worse than they expected. A total of 15 vehicle were involved including a greyhound bus coming from Pittsburg but what most terrifying was the school bus. The freeway in both directions was completely closed off. There were mangled bodies strewn everywhere and first responders already fast at work. Don immediately put Samuel to work at diverting traffic while traffic while he went help the other however he could. About an hour latter shots rang out. At first it was just a single pop but quickly it built up to what sounded like a firefight. Frantic calls streamed over the radios for back up and Samuel sprang into action. Running a half mile as fast as he could up hill his imagination ran wild. As he created the hill his training kicked in and he took to cover. Maneuvering from one car to the next until he was able to get an adequate vantage point. From there he could a small pocket of his fellow brothers firing on a mob of civilians but no matter how many times they were shot they just kept coming. Before he could react and join the others three shot burst out from his left. There he saw his supervisor fighting with another man covered in blood on the ground. Sergeant Grove struggled as the man climbed on top of him scratching and clawing. Samuel rushed as fast as he could and dove at the attacker knocking him a few feet to the side. Getting to his feet as quickly as he could Samuel drew his weapon and order the man to stay down but he wouldn’t listen. The man stood up and slowly turned towards Samuel. That’s when he saw it, the man was missing half of his face like it has been sanded off down to the bone. It hissed just before it charged at him. Samuel placed three shots square in the mans chest before resorting to a fatal head shot. Once the threat had been eliminated Samuel rushed over to check on his partner. It wasn’t good, Don was covered I his own blood and shock was swiftly overcoming him. Samuel tried patching him up as best as he could to stop the bleeding before he hoisted him up on his shoulders and ran back down the hill to their cruiser. As they approached their vehicle panic had already set in. Civilians had abandoned their vehicle and ran off on foot essencitally creating a larger blockage. Fortunately, the K-9 cruiser was an SUV and Samuel was easily able to use the shoulder to get to the near east exit. The entire ride to the hospital Don kept repeating over and over “that mother fucker bit me”. They were just a few short blocks away from the emergency room entrance when Don went silent. When Samuel pulled up the the ER door they were met by a team of nurses who immediately went to work. As his partner disappear behind the sliding glass doors another call came across the radio that there were attacks happening over. Was this another terrorist attack happening in his own home town?
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
It took less than a week for a population of just over 120,000 people to be cut down to a few hundred. Most of them were in small groups spread out over a 15 mile radius covering parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. Those who were able made their way to a semi defendable position on Washington street. There four main building were used, the library, court house, a church and a Masonic temple. Among the survivors was Samuels old friend, Mayor Johnson. Like any leader, Mayor Johnson took charge and order these buildings to be secured as he ran his operations center out of the castle looking courthouse. After everything was secure the main group went out looking for the other survivors and supplies. Months passed and food supplies dwindled scouting parties had to fan out further and further but the further they went the fewer that would return. In a desperate attempt at surviving the mayor decided it was time to go hunting. Scouting parties turned into kill squads and as the year passed the hordes of undead become less but not without a cost. Ten people is all that remained; Travis wanted to stay and wait for help but the people were scared. Eight of the remaining held a secret meeting and voted it was time to move on and with rumors that a sanctuary was set up in D.C. they decided that’s where they were heading. It didn’t take much convincing for Travis before he agreed that was the best course of action. As for Samuel on the other hand he decided to stay. He still had family missing and he had to know for sure before he could just abandon them.
Over the next few years Samuel stayed put running into a few people every now and then. He would offer them shelter for a short period of time but always telling them about the possible sanctuary in D.C. Every time each group would ultimately decide that they too would head east to D.C. The only advice he was able to give; “follow the C&O canal east or stick to the railroad track and they will take straight into D.C. keeping you away from major cities. If you are lucky enough to find a boat I recommend that you take the river. It’s the safest way to travel.”
