Outside the rolling gates of the insidious raider camp they were finally patched up and free to go. Before they left Ellen told her the man that so rudely bumped into her had shoved a note into her jacket pocket. She must not have felt it over the bandages that Liz had tight ly wrapped around her arm and shoulder. But there was Sterling's car waiting for them. She went to trunk and found the promised handguns and ammo.
"I'll drive. Liz, you get in back."
Dannie looked at Sterling wondering if he would make the trip to Kansas in the front or if he needed to lay down the entire trip back. Before she could ask though she saw Hykeem pulling up in another car. She remembered the note in her pocket that was placed there by the man. She never changed her expression as she looked over the words while speaking to him.
"Are you going to be alright to take the front or so you want to lay down in back?" Liz said to Sterling as she nervously left with the pair. Nate, Mia and the others had left a few weeks ago and she wasn't even sure if they would be waited for. Either way she had no choice now. Instead of turning around and going back inside the safety of the complex, she decided to leave with the wounded.
Another group that she was going to try and trust. But this group was different. Sterling was different and she couldn't quite figure out why. There was something in his eyes that forced her to trust him even though the propaganda at the camp said otherwise. When Hykeem rolled up, she protectively went to Sterling and reached into her backpack, pulling out her handgun. Her hand reached down as if she were reaching to hold his hand but instead she placed her gun in his palm. He was a better shot and far more qualified to us it.
She looked up at him with a nervous gaze as Dannie took the lead on the conversation. She would intervene if necessary but Hykeem looked just as anxious to leave as they did.
"We should leave soon. They won't tolerate us sitting out here long."
Hykeem held a straight face as he walked towards the small group. He walked casually not wanting to cause anymore trouble then they already had.
"Sorry I couldn't make preparations earlier. I had just gotten in a mess with the guards in there and figured they'd want me out sooner or later. I chose sooner."
He smiled again pointing at the gate to the group of guards watching them. When suddenly a lady spoke of them leaving.
"She's right we should probably moving. I've got an open seat for who ever wants it."
He gave a quick smile before turning around back towards his car and climbing into it.
"If I need to switch out I'll make it known. For now I'll ride up front."
He watched as the new guy approached. He didn't know the guy, and was not in the most trusting of moods. It all just seemed too strange. About the only thing this guy had going for him was the fact that Ellen seemed to dislike him. That was almost enough in and of itself.
He grabbed the gun that Liz handed him. He tried to be a little secretive about it. He didn't want the people who were no doubt still watching to see that he had a gun. He held the weapon out away from his body, gripped like he would have held a service weapon. It was aimed at a 45 degree angle at the ground. Ready to come up in an instant if needed.
"I'm glad you want to help us, we could use it, but on the other side. I don't know you from Adam, and I don't get the notion either of these two lovely ladies do either, so we'll travel with you, but we will ride in the squad car. I hope you understand."
He looked back. They were far to close to the gates to be having this conversation. It would take only one trigger happy sniper to dislike what they were doing and they would be dead, and Sterling knew a thing or two about bear lake and trigger happy snipers. He had no doubt that Ellen was watching them as they spoke.
"As much as I would like to do the whole meet and greet with the new guy we need to move. One impatient sniper and we're all dead. I seem to remember one of those types two weeks ago... Gave me a new hole in my side. Let's move. We'll stop somewhere safe to talk."
He went to the squad car and climbed in the passenger seat. Normally he would be driving but he was in no condition to do so. He saw that it was his squad car because the picture of his wife sat where it had always sat on the dashboard.
Liz nodded to Sterling as he laid claim to the front passenger seat. She hoped he could make the trek to Kansas to meet up with the others if anything for himself. If he could make it, it would sprove he was healing quickly. She was also glad she gave him the gun. He could handle it better then she could. He was right though.. There was no to!e for pleasantries. They had to go before Ellen got word they were lingerting and more unnecessary and unfortunate shots were fired.
She got into the backseat of the car and was immediately intimidated as she sat behind the cage. This was normally a place for criminals and that was sometjing she never was. Her life calling was healing. As her eyes ?looked around the car she settled them on the picture of the pretty blonde. She already recognized her as his wife.
"Do you keep a lot of pictures of your wife? It seems nice that you keep her so close to your heart."

"They're right. We don't have time for any bullshit. We have to go. Follow us if you want but just know now that I have no trust for you. Because of what they did I won't have a second thought about taking you out if you pull anything on us."
And she meant that. She just wanted to get the hell out of this state and as far away from these sorority lunatics as quickly as possible. She had an idea where to go but she had to get to the meeting point first. As she roared the engines the tires spun out sending a spray of mud and snow towards the gate and they were off to Kansas.
