Out of the frying pan and into the fryer.
Lily knew that that farm was done for from the moment that she had opened her eyes. After she had saved the lives of everyone in that truck, she had given Jack two options when she was falling unconscious: take her back to where he was from or leave her in the car with the doors locked. He had chosen the former option, but as Lily walked down the side of the road with less than she had ever had before, she wished that he had chosen the latter. Kennedy, the tyrant that ruled over the farm, had taken her duffel bag full of weapons and ammo. And being taken to the farm meant that she started over with basically nothing. When the farm burned to the ground on top of that, Lily had already been three points down.
She had managed to escape with some medical supplies that Dean had showed her in the cellar. In all of the ensuing chaos, she had managed to grab a bottle of water and a loaf of bread from the kitchen, and had gotten very fortunate in finding a pistol under the floorboards of the burning barn. But even then, she had no ammo other than what was inside of the chamber, and she had only counted three bullets when she had left. Lily was used to travelling with a duffel bag of weapons and ammo, as well as food and water to spare. But now, with all of her supplies thrown over her shoulder in a trash bag and her original knife gripped in her other hand, Lily felt like she had gone from riches to rags.
She didn't even know if anyone had escaped. Jack, the kind man that had helped her before, went down in the sea of walkers that flooded the farm once the walls started to burn away. The young Asian boy with the injured friend vanished before her eyes, and the doctor that hadn't been murdered had vanished as well. Lily didn't know much about any of the people, and while she felt ultimately indifferent towards all of them, that didn't mean that she wished bad things on them automatically. She hoped that all of the good people escaped, and that the raiders would pay for what they had done.
Lily scowled and adjusted the bag thrown over her shoulder. Fucking raiders. She hated them more than she hated anyone, except maybe her husband. She pushed the bastard out of her head, wishing him dead too, and continued to limp along the road. Her thigh was doing better now that she had sewn it up, and with antibiotics rustling around in her bag, she knew that she would be fine to heal. But that didn't make walking any easier, and now that smoke from the blazing fire was beginning to choke the night air, she would need to find somewhere to crash for the night. This was farm country, and she had a feeling the nearest farm was at least a few miles away. She opted for the safety of the road, though she would veer off into the woods if she saw danger or a path leading to a new farm. Truth be told, she would climb a tree if she absolutely had to.
Well, except that she had no rope to tie herself to the trunk and sleep like she had in the past. Lily cursed under her breath, unable to believe the situation that she had found herself in, and carried on. Maybe she would get lucky and find an unlocked car that she could sleep in. The future was expansive and uncertain for Lily, and as she walked down a slope in the road, she quickened her pace to keep up and didn't slow until the road leveled out again. She looked over her shoulder, always checking her surroundings, before she returned her eyes forward and continued to walk.
It was going to be a long night.
