-He is, deep down, a bitter man, and sometimes this weakness shows.
Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Thomas was born in Miami, Florida, to an upper-middle class family. He and his older brother Anthony excelled in school, with Anthony attended Notre Dame and Thomas attending Duke. Thomas, intending to follow his brother's footsteps by attending law school, enrolled in Notre Dame Law School, though he soon found it was not his path. Already at the Catholic university, Thomas applied and was accepted to the Seminary, and after seven years, became a Brother of the Holy Cross.
Fr. Thomas remained at the college, taking up an administrative position and the rector of a residence hall before being sent on a mission to Washington, DC to help underprivileged schools and children
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Fr. Thomas was in Washington, DC on outbreak day--his brother, Anthony, attended law school there, so Thomas knew the area somewhat well. Thomas was on the subway when he had his first encounter with a walker: a woman, seemingly incapacitated, arose and bit into the neck of a man sitting right next to Father Thomas. Although Fr. Thomas was of the group that tried to help the man, it was not long before panic broke loose and the crowd flooded off of the subway--Fr. Thomas and his fellow priests included.
The trio of priests made their way out of the city, and Thomas called his brother, Anthony, in Miami, to see if he was alright. They made contact, and agreed they would meet in Savannah, Georgia. Of course, that was years ago, and the plan never materialized. Still, Thomas holds hope to meet his brother in Georgia, not knowing Anthony was killed during a violent storm in Florida.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Father Thomas and his fellow priests organized a small, religious community on the outskirts of DC. For a time, the community thrived by clinging to faith and remaining relatively small and thus "under the radar."
Thomas' comparative traditionalism finally convinced him to leave, as he believed the other priests "had forgotten their mission" and were simply trying to survive day-by-day, and not continuing their mission as Men of the Cloth. Determined to find his brother, or another community, or purpose, Fr. Thomas Burns began his journey south from DC.
