The Fort was well constructed with thick stone, and while it didn't do much for decoration, it provided its few residents with shade from the sun. It could be damp when it rained and dank when the sun went down, but on this day, it helped Haruka sleep in although the sun was high in the sky. Though lately, Haruka had been sleeping in a lot more than usual. She had been at the Fort for a few weeks now, and at first, it had been great. They had a sturdy roof over their heads and thick walls that were naturally fortified against the elements. They had a ship docked right outside that filtered its own water. They had food that was stored on the ship, as well as anything that they could catch from the ocean right outside. And more than that, they had a drawbridge that protected them from any intruders. It had been quiet, the most quiet that Haruka had experienced since she had been taken away from her father, and that had resulted in peace. Tyler and Elias were both kind to her, and as time had gone on, their promise of not being bad people seemed to be true. Elias was funny and always kept her in a good humor, and Tyler had a soft heart that made him a great companion.
Haruka only wished that Caleb could be here to see it. A little over a week ago, he just vanished. He went to run to the car to get something, and he never returned. Haruka had ventured out in search of him when he didn't come back within a comfortable amount of time, but she could only search so far on her own. She had checked all around the Fort and in the little town. She had ventured into gift shops and restaurants. She had all but turned the car upside down for any hint or clue of what could have happened to him. But he was just gone without a trace. Haruka knew deep inside of her heart that he hadn't just abandoned her. Caleb wasn't that kind of person, and he had also left all of the supplies and the car. If he was going to sneak off, she would have liked the think that he would have at least left with some preparations. But Haruka knew that that wasn't the case, that something had happened to him. And that made her sick with worry. Her own inability to only search for him to a certain point made her feel guilty, and being without him made her soft heart so sad. On top of losing her only friend, she hadn't heard anything from her father. No one had arrived since her message, not even a stranger, and it made her feel hopeless. Maybe Papa was gone. Just like Caleb was gone.
It made her feel depressed and listless, and that in turn made her sleep. During the first week or so of her stay there, she had had a blast. She had played in the ocean with Caleb. She had even caught a fish all by herself. She had explored the cruise ship and taken a real shower. She had laid out in the grass where Elias had been drinking, and she had toured the interior of the Fort with Tyler. She had had so much fun, but now, she just slept and waited around for something to happen. Today, she finally stirred from her slumber. She had been curled up on a cot, her back turned towards the gap in between the walls and the ceiling where the sun shone in. She opened her eyes and stared at the wall for a moment, the same wall that she had faced for the past few weeks. But it looked different now, despite there being no real physical changes. Maybe it was the amount of time spent in the Fort with her newfound companions. Or maybe it was the loneliness she still felt despite that. But today, she decided that she didn't want to lay around in her makeshift room.
Haruka pushed herself off of her cot and greeted the day. The stone floor was cold on her bare feet despite the sun shining outside, and she wasted no time dressing in a pair of blue shorts and a white tank top. There was still some of Benedict's blood stained on the pocket of the shorts, but all of her clothes were like that now. She grabbed the yellow cardigan she had been using as a blanket and donned it, wanting protection from the sun. She would take it off when it became too much. She pulled on a pair of pink socks and donned her white sneakers before tossing her long black hair up into a messy bun. She took in a deep breath, sleep still heavy in her eyes, and patted her cheeks twice to wake up before she left her sleeping space.
It didn't take her long to find her companions. Elias was out in the courtyard as he usually was, sunbathing with his feet in a little inflatable pool. He had something brown in a bottle at his side, possibly whiskey. Haruka had never had an alcoholic drink before, so she couldn't be sure. Tyler was looming nearby, though Haruka wasn't sure exactly what he was doing just yet. Elias and Tyler were like two peas in the strangest pod, and Haruka never knew exactly what they were up to. Out of instinct, she looked around for Caleb, though he was nowhere to be found. He never was. And yet, she couldn't stop looking. She couldn't stop searching. And Haruka had a feeling that that would never go away. Benedict had died in her arms, and yet she still saw him out of the corner of her eye, looming in the shadows. It had been over a year that she had been separated from her papa, and yet, she was always looking for him, too. It was a hard habit that she didn't know if she could break.
"Good morning," Haruka greeted as she walked out into the courtyard. It was probably afternoon at that point, but she couldn't really tell the difference when she was groggy. She offered up a smile, though it was a little sad, and came to sit down by where the little pool was. The weather was finally beginning to cool down a bit despite the sun shining overhead, and although it was still a little warm, it wasn't blazing like when she had first arrived. She let her pale fingers dance in the tepid water before she looked up at both of her companions. "What are you guys up to?"
