Climbing inside the Humvee, she looked at Kelsey and Jenna and Piers and said to the three of them, "Looks like we found some salvation," reaching over to give Piers a friendly squeeze on his shoulder, "and maybe a new home, for all of us...."
"Let's hope so, Alex," Kelsey said quietly, holding Jenna close as they sat in the back of the Humvee, watching as the military vehicles ahead lead them - and the rest of the convoy - into New Fort Worth. If NFW was like 77th Street, Kelsey knew everyone would have to go through a basic medical check before being allowed to stay, but it also meant a chance to start anew, to start fresh in a new place, free from the memories of Southern California - the earthquake, fighting to stay alive afterward, freeing as many people as they could - memories Kelsey knew she'd never forget. "Hey, there must be military personnel here," Kelsey whispered absentmindedly, noting the F-16s' lined up over on a nearby runway and humorously mused, Ben would have a damn coronary if he knew we were within eyesight of a bunch of Air Force brats, as they continued further on.
Eventually, the combined convoy slowly came to a stop and Kelsey nudged Jenna a few times, whispering to her, "Wake up, sweetheart; looks like we got us a welcoming party greeting us here, " as she looked and saw that, up ahead, a group of people - Kelsey figured they were NFW residents and officials - stood waiting to greet them as everyone in the convoy came to a stop and began climbing out of their vehicles, weapons left inside. "Come on, Jenna, let's see what's going on, okay..."
