Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- Soley grew up in a small village in the far northern region of Iceland that stays snow covered for nine to ten months out of the year, only breaking for a few months during summer and not ever lasting long. Her childhood was a little different than most, being home schooled she never experienced the 'traditional' school life. Soley spent most of her childhood helping with the daily chores around the house by day and doing school work by night, She never complained however, to her the daily routine was the norm, it was what she knew and what she was accustomed to. On the weekends she would go out and play with the other children in the small community that sat on the edge of the vast Norwegian Sea. When she was ten Soley was taught to sew and cook from her mother to give her the skills she would need to survive as an adult and both tasks became something she enjoyed, Sewing slowly became something that calmed her nerves and cooking became something like a competition of sorts with her mother, they would take turns every day and her father would be the elected judge.
When Soley turned thirteen her parents surprised her with saying that they were going to take a trip to visit America for a few weeks, The prospect of getting to see another culture and area of the world had always intrigued her so when this news met her ears she had a permanent smile glued to her face all the way from leaving Iceland to getting through customs in Dallas.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
- Soley and her family had been traveling around the southern and western portion of the United States for the last week, coming back to the Dallas area after going all the way to San Francisco where they visited the golden gate bridge. After passing through the grand cannon on their way there they circled back around to regroup and relax for a few days before catching their flight back to Iceland. Soley had enjoyed every last bit of it, the sites, the people, the weather, everything; She had the thought of wanting to live there some day cross her mind a few times, not having to keep a fire going for ten months out of the year and having everything within walking distance you could ever wish to have was extremely enticing. The only thing that intimidated her though was the tongue of the people there was as alien to her as her's was to them. Her father had done most of the talking up to that point and she hadn't really had a reason to learn it so it didn't bother her all that much but as time would go on she would start regretting that decision
Making it back to Dallas Soley and her family rented a room in a local hotel to pass the three days before their return flight was set to leave, spending her time going through the souvenirs she had collected throughout their travels, some she found, Others were bought for her like the rock she took from the grand cannon, the Magnet with a picture of the Golden Gate bridge that her father had bought her from the shop close by along with a plethora of other ins and outs that they had snagged along they way, They didn't really do anything in Dallas however, opting to just hang out in the hotel room until the day their flight was set to leave rolled around.
The day to leave had come, Sadly. Soley didn't want to leave at all, even though she didn't understand anything being said by anyone but her parent's she loved being in the concrete jungle that America was living up to being. The morning came and she fought every step of the way when they were getting ready to return, Every step was a struggle as they made their way through the doors of DFW and into departure. Only when they got there they noticed a commotion at the gate, the attendant wasn't letting people board, in fact, none of the attendants were letting people board any of the flights, all flights had been put on hold, but for what? Soley wondered as she glanced around at the angry and frustrated faces around her, her parents being among them as they argued in alien tongue to the woman behind the desk, Soley caught bits and pieces but was lost for the most part.
As the time passed a man in a suit on the television caught the crowds attention and was reporting on dead walking, to find shelter immediately and to not leave your homes, with all flights canceled and the preposterous tale of the walking dead beginning to roam Soley's father grabbed their stuff and marched his family back out of the building mumbling to himself about how they'll just catch another flight and that the he wasn't dealing with those people any more, The flight would begin boarding about ten minutes after they left and was one of the last flights out of the airport before the end...
Making their way back to the hotel they rented yet another room to figure out what to do, Soley was told to not concern herself with the matter and to go play with her trinkets, She was too young to care for what was going on and was actually sorta happy they missed their flight, it meant that they were going to stay in the states for at least a little while longer. The new reports continued and the streets below began to go mad with panic at the first signs of the horror that was befalling the world. The reports of dead walking was indeed true and to the families horror they were stuck in one of the most populated cities taxes had to offer. Night fell and the amount of chaos on the streets began to rage on, dead roamed the streets and battles between what looked like the military and whatever those things were broke out, The evacuation effort had been put into effect south but Soley and her family couldn't find a way to get there, they were trapped in that small, two bed room of the hotel.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- Spending nearly two weeks in the small room in the hotel the family had barricaded themselves in and had lived off the minifridge food for as long as they could, Soley was terrified of the things outside, the things that were happening, terrified from the fact that no one came to rescue them and that it looked like they were completely on their own. After the food in their room ran out they were forced to move on, creeping their way down to the first floor they noticed that the place was void of any staff or fellow guests, assuming they had managed to get out in time they family searched around for anything useful, only managing to find a small bag and a pistol in the back managers office they set out to try and find anyone or anything they could use to stay safe.
Two years they moved from place to place, not knowing the area they roamed aimlessly for the most part, sometimes north, sometimes east. They managed to get all the way up and into Oklahoma at one point during their travels in the old station wagon they had managed to find on the outskirts of Dallas. They never strayed far from Texas though, it being one of the only somewhat familiar places in the states that they knew, struggling through finding gas and food the family scrapped by, Soley's father had begrudgingly taught her to shoot the P-32 pistol they had found in the hotel in the beginning but he understood that she needed to know how to protect herself, now more than ever.
Another year of roaming went by before they managed to find a small settlement to the north of Dallas in Sherman where they managed to live in some comfort for about a year, The place was small and food was hard to find but they managed to keep going, Soley had managed to make friends with the son of one of the settlement members there and he taught her some english, she could understand more than she could speak though and the speaking part seemed to be a very hard thing for her to grasp. The day that place fell was a sad day, a very sad day. The place had been dealing with a group of bandits that had claimed the area a few months prior to the families arrival and they didn't really give the place any grief unless they failed to give them what they asked for, The day they didn't however was the day they would regret for the rest of their lives. The drop hadn't been made and the bandits pulled the plug, busting down the wall and attacking Soley ran for her life. She had been carrying her fathers pistol when it all happened, she was at training when it all started and had been making her way back to the house they had been assigned when they had arrived. When chaos ingulfed the place Soley ran to her house to try and find her parents but they were nowhere to be found, not a trace of them was in the house.
Not being able to stay and look for them and being crunched for time as the bandits began clearing the houses she hastily packed a bag and threw it over her shoulder, snuck out of the back door and through the back exit that the bandits seemed to not know about. Maybe that's what her parents did as well she thought as she squeezed through the wooden passage. Soley searched for two weeks for her parents but alone for the first time she was completely lost, the bouts of sickness queued by her blood sugar acting up didn't help either but she pushed through in the hope of finding them. She began heading south back towards Dallas after checking through Sherman in the hope that they managed to get out as well and that they had headed back to the hotel. By this point Soley had learned the bulk of the English Alphabet and could read the signs and followed them as best she could as she made her way back into Dallas, The dead being ever present she cautiously made her way back to the hotel, the haunting silence of the building being the only thing that greeted her she began to cry. Tears flowing she made her way out of the town to the west into once was the town of Fort Worth where she was surprisingly greeted by life. Not the dead and decaying unnatural life but the living breathing kind. A stronghold that seemed to be double the size of the place they stayed. In the hope that her parents had managed to find this place she made her way to the gate where she was greeted by guards and military personnel. Being taken in she is now being held in the new arrivals section in a small one bedroom house near the wall. Hoping that her parents will come walking through the door she waits patiently for someone, anyone to come and tell her whats going on and what this place is.
