Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Saffron's life was fairly decent and innocent; she had a healthy dream job of helping people in some shape or form, she wanted to be an astronaut, or even work in the military!
Her mother often told her everything would be okay with the two of them, since her father had left them earlier in her life. He wasn't around too much for Saffron to feel attached to him, but her mother was another story. A tragic time in her life came when she was 13 years old, she developed a rare case of dementia that focused mainly on hallucinations and mood swings, but her memory remained intact and was unaffected. Her dementia led her to seeing thing, of course, that occasionally tormented her and were just as occasionally trivial. Sometimes she would see her father again, coming back to them to be a happy family...or see him as a bloodlusting murderer complete with a fire axe and a smile of feigned innocence.
She would always wake up in sweat only to be greeted by her mother's concerned presence, and would end up sleeping in her arms minutes later. As the years passed and Saffron went through school as a teenager, Saffron began to pick up on working with medicine due to her condition, and she learned to stave off the influence of her dementia, keeping her sanity in an almost professional level of control. Her focus of career cemented when she went to get her first batch vitamins from the pharmacy to help her in her sports classes in high school.
Tennis, basketball, baseball; it didn't matter. Saffron was the athletic type of girl who worked hard, and even took up the rare extracurricular Archery classes her school offered, a sport she found she rather loved. After she graduated high school, she took to go to Harvard University for her medical practices and career in pharmaceuticals and nutrition, and took up lessons in playing a piano and violin in private with a tutor with her grandfather's rendition of Chopin's "Fantasie Impromptu" for inspiration, while she gained skill from experimentally doing archery on the side in her own time.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
One evening, she got a call from her mother in another township, complaining that she was in need of her help. She took that as a hard note that her mother was ill, or someone close to her was; why else would she need an express pharmacist's help? She drove down to her house in a hurry, and entered in a bit of a rush. She found her mother harboring a thin, raspy-loooking man holding his chest on her couch. While her mother went on to get her guest something to drink, Saffron started the routine of asking her "patient" if he had any medical histories she had to be aware of as she would go through the medicine bag she always kept on her. Things turned dark, a bit later, after he had answered a few questions.
The patient fell over onto the floor next to the couch, seemingly passed out as her mother came back in. Saffron knew she wasn't going to be able to help him, so she told her mother to call 911 while she tended to the man. The lines were busy, but luck shone for her when a pair of policemen in SWAT gear burst through the door, armed and ready. Saffron was taken aback and stood up from the unconscious man, only to hear it so swiftly--a thunderous snap resounded through the living room,
and it took Saffron several seconds to process it before she looked down. The man, pasty and sweat-covered, had tried to move and his eyes were faded in color, and now had a bleeding bullet wound in his temple. Screams rang out from her and her mother, and the men suggested they pack up to leave with them, before leaving the house after saying they'd explain later.
There wasn't going to be a later for her or for her mother. Minutes later, Saffron was looking for her mother in the house since she hadn't seen her for a few minutes, only to gasp in shock as she found her in the bathroom with a knife in her hand.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Ever since the day the undead took over, things haven't been easy for Saffron, in fact they became outright worse. Even with the comfort of any Strongholds willing to take her in,
except for bandits, she would still be plagued with nightmarish hallucinations of her deceased mother, the person she confided in most and loved. Her departure from the world made the hole in her heart quite a void, and the temptation to follow her was at an all-time high, a temptation she eventually would fight with the resolve to "live for her". Her skills as a pharmacist had grown and evolved over the 4 years since that day, with her learning the art of blending her own pharmaceuticals and plant life to basic pharma-culinary techniques.
Her growing role as a healer and supporter would be a great help to any Stronghold that needed her,
but such a thing wouldn't be a reality if they knew what she had.
