After a few minutes, the horde was pretty much thinned out and Ellen gestured her squad to gather round. She went in the back of her dad's car and switched her sniper rifle for a silenced M4 with a holosight.
"Alright, let's make sure they're all dead!" Ellen said. "And be careful, Randall and that Luca guy are still in there as well! Let's make sure none of these rotters got into the lake."
Ellen then took her squad forward until they were at the cabin. A couple of her guys finished off what was left of the walkers as Ellen carefully moved up to the cabin, the M4 aimed in front of her.
"Randall! Randall you in there!?" Ellen shouted. "Randall! Come on old man, talk to me!"
Feeling genuinely concerned for her friend, Ellen would hate it if the old man had gone and got himself bitten or killed and would walk out of the cabin turned. She really hoped it hadn't come to that. There was also no sign of the Lacroix woman, although Ellen wouldn't figure that as a great loss.
Mac had driven the vehicles to the cabin as well by now and brought the rest of the QRF along with Charlie and their new redhead friend. Ellen looked at her dad with a worried face. She really hoped her friend would come out unharmed.
Charlie raised an eyebrow at Rose calling her Blondie. She figured she was probably color-blind. As Ellen took a squad in, Charlie kept overlooking their advance. Once it was clear, Charlie switched the rifle for her crossbow and hung on the side of Mac's car as they were driven to the cabin again.
Ellen called for Randall but the old man gave no answer. Why hadn't he ran to safety? The old guy was a hardass but that just made Charlie like him, and she'd be upset as well if he turned out to be dead. There still was no sign of the Lacroix woman and the last Charlie saw was that she moved toward the lake. Charlie moved toward the lake but couldn't find a trace of the woman. Only thing she found were the vials of blood packed in snow in the backpack. Why the hell did she leave these behind?
Charlie took the backpack and brought them back up front. Doctor Andrei would probably want these. As for the real Blondie, Charlie wouldn't miss her if she never came back. That woman was nothing but trouble.
"Blondie's gone." Charlie said to Ellen and Mac. "She left her precious samples though. Any sign of Randall?"
Ellen shook her head. Mac bumped the hood of the car. "Son of a bitch Remy!" Mac cursed. "What the hell are you doing?"
Knowing that not even Mac knew what the Lacroix woman was doing didn't surprise Charlie. The woman was unreliable and a liability.
"If you don't know then I don't know mister McA.!" Charlie answered. "I know your friend Andrei'll want these samples though."
She handed over the backpack to Mac, who put it in the jeep. Charlie then took a stance near Ellen, waiting for Randall to come out.
Rose stayed near charlie.Frankly She was the only one who hadn't put a gun to her back, andd it seemed inclined that she wouldn't.
she looked at her and snickered"have a good snog?" this was mostly to hide the pain in her heart.
her mind was thinking of her wife....where ever she was.She tried to remember her face but it had only gotten a bit fuzzy.she had pictures on an Iphone in her pocket, but she was saving its battery.
in case of....she wanted her wife to be the last thing on her mind.
Grant helped clear out the rest of the Stumblers. After he saw the QRF begin to leave he followed them. He climbed into one of the cars and rode it out to the cabin. He leaned against the door, trying to see what the other cars were doing.
Once there he stepped out, he slung his rifle on his back and pulled his pistol. It had low power but he could use it to get out of a jam. He kept it raised up and ready, his finger resting on the side.
He saw people come and go, and hear that a Remy was gone.
"Should we track her? She couldn't have gotten far sir," Grant said to Mac, "we could go with a small group of men, get her back safely." He still helped his pistol. Grant wasn't the best tracker, but if they started to find a path he could maneuver it to find her.
Grant waited for a response, "though she probably left for a reason. Just hope it doesn't cause trouble for your camp."
What the hell was wrong with Remy? Was she honestly running because Bear Lake wouldn't allow her to experiment? And why the hell would she leave the blood samples, and her equipment in the camp? When Grant asked him if they should look for her Mac grunted and nodded no.
"No." Mac said. "The longer I knew her, the more she annoyed me. She always does what she pleases. She wants to be lost so I say let her get lost. I'm done looking out for her. I'm not gonna risk anyone or anything for her anymore."
If Remy didn't want his help or the protection of the settlement then Mac wasn't going to bother anymore. If Remy wanted to be alone then she could get lost for all he cared. He had two daughters to look after; others were lucky to get his help.
"Fair enough Sir," Grant said looking at the man. He could understand that, why go out of your way, risking supplies and people, just to help someone who doesnt want it. "Let's just hope she doesn't become a liability to your camp out there. Telling everyone about it. Using it as a bargaining chip for raiders. Would hate to see anything happen to it."
He still had his pistol raised, finger disciplined. "Those two inside the one leads the runs, correct," he asked motioning to where they were calling to. "Means they can both handle themselves. Don't need be on edge." He lowered his pistol but still kept it out and ready.
"The bag, has blood samples," Grant asked looking into it, "what was she doing with them?"
Charlie chuckled. 'Snog'. These Brits and their slang... To think she was descended from them. What would her ancestors think knowing the last of their name would be fighting off the living dead? Although 'Duchess Atherton' did have a nice ring to it, even though she was anything but ladylike. Having tea in the parlor? Not for this lady!
"Heh, you jelly?" Charlie asked Rose. "You uhh... into clam chowder as well?"
If Rose was a lesbian she'd have missed her shot. Although... maybe a threesome. Charlie smiled slightly at the thought, wondering for a moment whether or not the carpet matched the drapes. But she loved Ellen and she'd never do anything to hurt her. And with Big Poppa McAllister around, that probably wouldn't be the smart thing to do either.
the question she was asked caught her off guard "uh...i....." she showed her wedding ring.this only made feel sick." Don't ask, her fate isn't something I want on my mind right know...some dark places there I don't want to go near."
she clamped down on her mind before it could go to the image of her as a stoner or worse.
Charlie looked at the wedding ring. Married woman huh? Still, it seemed to be a touchy subject. Rose said 'her' so Charlie knew she had guessed right. But it obviously caused her pain and Charlie wasn't blind to that. Rose asked if they were good people and it made Charlie wonder... They were, weren't they? Everything they had done was to protect the people in the settlement, even if they sometimes did bad things for the greater good. Everything they did, they did so because of a good reason. Not just because they could. They gave people a chance to survive, to live... Charlie knew she had done bad things, hurt and killed people... But the reason why soothed her conscience.
"Yeah, we're the good guys." Charlie said convinced of that statement. "I'm not gonna claim sainthood for myself or anything... God knows I'm anything but. But I'm still able to look at myself in the mirror every morning and smile."
she looked down, sighing, she was tired of watching her back every minute of every day."do you mind if I go with you? It'd be good to have a place to regain my composure."
She should have trusted her gut instinct and walked away, she was just so tired.
she swung her rifle over her shoulder and held her cricket bat.this was as close she had every come to completely dropping her guard since the apocalypse had happened
Charlie smiled at Rose when she asked to go with them. There were people who might not look favorably on them bringing in another mouth to feed, but like always they were welcome to kiss Charlie's ass. And put their tongue in there as well if they were female.
"Hell Red, thought you'd never ask." Charlie answered.
she looked at her oddly."well then.....no sense in staying in this shithole....too many bears for my taste."she said letting a small smile cross her face
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
