Soon Kevin and Michael reached a ladder. He told Kevin to climb first, so Kevin placed his gun back in his holster and started climbing. He was halfway the ladder as suddenly his hand slipped due to the blood. “Shit.” Kevin said as he nearly fell all the way down. Lucky for him he had a good grip on his right hands, which was the one that was still holding the ladder, the pressure of his full weight on one hand cause some pain in his shoulder.”I’m fine.” He said, cause he knew Michael would have seen him nearly falling. He quickly grabbed the ladder with his other hand to and continued to climb.
Some moment later he finally reached the top, there he waited for Michael while he was trying to catch his breath. He used his good hand and offered it to Michael who was nearly at the end of the ladder too.

Michael tried to climb but on the first slots on the ladder Kevins blood made it impossible to climb. He jumped on a dumpster the other side of the alleyway and leaped at the ladder grabbing a dryer handle. He then headed up slowly keeping his eyesight on the ladder. He didn't look up or down. He didn't use Kevin's hand and lifted himself up at the top of the ladder.
Looking down once stood at the top they were on the roof of a smaller office building "Well we are safe here for now... Ill check a minute if you want to bandage up... Can figure a route from here"

"Alright, sounds good to me." answered Tory who couldn't help but crack a small smile from the irony. I guess that settles it. Tory mused, she'd be able to see the Empire State Building after all. They do say the Lord works in mysterious ways. The news didn't make things easier and it wasn't enough to lift her spirits, but it was enough to add an extra spring in her step.
Tory trudged on after Steph; she felt like she had carried her bags for hours before she finally allowed herself to drag her feet. I can do this. Keep walking...Keep walking The city only grew darker as they moved down the street. Tory slipped a few times, but she never lost her balance and recovered without missing a beat. Peeking around the corner of an intersection as they traveled, she motioned Steph to come back and take a look. Walkers. There was alot of them and they were all headed in one direction. "Is that normal?" she asked, "Why aren't they heading our way?" Tory patiently awaited Stephanie's instructions.

After walking along for some time, they'd come up to an intersection when Stephanie heard Tory ask her to come back to her for a moment. Joining her young companion at the corner, Steph followed Tory's line-of-sight and saw the small herd of walkers trundling along, oblivious to their presence.
"Is that normal?" she asked, "Why aren't they heading our way?" Tory patiently awaited Stephanie's instructions.
Thinking for a few moments, Stephanie watched the walkers trundle along, herself wondering why they hadn't caught sense of either of them. These surroundings, a virtual lack of activity...we should be flashing like a couple of open targets, she thought to herself. Maybe they're headed somewhere, perhaps?
Looking at the intersection they were in, Stephanie spoke, her voice quiet and calm. "A walker traveling alone isn't a problem....a bunch of them, traveling together...not something we want to deal with. And usually, they don't travel in packs unless--" Before she could continue, she craned her neck around, as if she'd heard something. "Hold up,' she said, looking quickly down each street. I know I heard something, she thought, these concrete canyons reflect sound easily... "To finish your question...why aren't they headed our way? My guess, Tory: there are other survivors nearby. But where?"
Looking around for several more moments, Stephanie smiled for a moment as her eyed spied a Humvee sitting nearby, looking a little out of sorts but otherwise in decent shape. "As soon as those walkers," pointing back towards the herd they'd seen earlier, "get far enough down the road, I'm going to see if I can't hotwire that vehicle," pointing towards the Humvee so that Tory could see it, "so we'll at least have some wheels. That sound good?" She hated making plans up on-the-fly but mused, thinking it's either find us some wheels or keep walkin'...

"Ya," she whispered in reply to Steph's question. Tory thought the plan seemed sound, as long as they weren't surprised by more walkers. Does she see something? Tory kept her eyes open, following Stephanie's gazes, but she, herself, couldn't see anything abnormal...not that she knew what abnormal was in the city.
The humvee was olive colored, standing out against the grey cityscape. Must have belonged to the military. Tory remained unsure of where she fit into Steph's plan, Should I wait here...or do I follow? but she elected to follow her companion to the vehicle as it seemed the safer choice.
Finding the humvee unlocked when they got there. Tory threw her bags in the back and climbed in the front passenger seat. Shotgun. She payed close attention to Steph, hotwiring could be a useful skill in this world. At the same time, Tory payed even closer attention to the walkers. "Do you think we could help them?" Tory asked, adding more when she realized how vague her question was, "Not the walkers, but the people they must be after..." Tory though about her own story, how nobody was around to rescue her group. The idea of following a herd of walkers struck fear in her heart; nonetheless, it still went out to the survivors she imagined must be close.

Michael refused Kevin his hand and climbed up on the roof. “Hey no need to be all distant.” Kevin said with a little smile as he tried to lighten up the mood a bit. Michael seemed different then he was before they left.
But then he was kind enough to take a break for a while so Kevin could take care of his hand. “Yeah that would be great.” Kevin said. Then he swung his backpack of his back, opened it and grabbed some bandage. He also had a small bottle of disinfectant which he also took out of the backpack. He sat down, ripped the bandage and laid it on his lap. Then he opened the bottle poured some disinfectant on the wound, grabbed the bandage and wrapped it around his hand, making a knot to make sure it wouldn’t come off. After that he closed the bottle and looked up at Michael. “Want me to take care of your wound too?” he asked.

After making their way over to the Humvee, both Stephanie and Tory climbed inside the Humvee, Tory following on Steph's every step. Leaning down underneath the steering column, Stephanie looked around to orient herself. I've hotwired many a vehicle but never a Humvee--ahh! There we go, she thought, dislodging a small panel from underneath the dash. "Alright, Tory...lesson number 1 on how to hotwire any vehicle. See the two wires here?" pulling out a couple of wires from the starter case, "every vehicle, whether its' a compact to a semi, have wires like this." Taking a moment to scrape the wires bare, she added, "and if you put them together like so," putting them together and tying them together, eliciting a muffled curse out of Stephanie, "you get a running motor," pausing as the sounds of the Humvee's diesel growled to life.
Checking to make sure everything was okay - no sense climbing inside and finding out the vehicle's a dud, she mused - Stephanie listened to Tory's question concerning whether they should try to follow the walkers and see if there were survivors. "Sounds good," she said, giving Tory a friendly shake on the shoulder. Throwing the Humvee into gear, they headed to the next intersection; pausing to make sure the coast was clear, Stephanie said, "We'll stay on this street and go to the next intersection; while I keep an eye on the road, I want you, Tory, to keep an eye out for any walkers, a'ight?" It felt weird taking responsibility for someone after so long, but it gave Stephanie a sense of satisfaction to know she hadn't lost all her humanity. Besides, she mused as they drove along, I have to admit...it is good to have someone nearby..., letting the thought trail with a simple smile as they headed down the street to the next intersection.

Michaels head wasnt really bad "Don't worry mines just a scratch, basic training I fell harder than this. We need to figure our next move" He was looking over the side at the walkers plotting "Damn... If only they would... rrrrgh" He then noticed a ladder on the other side of the building "We got two options. Head down through the building... maybe some supplies. Or we go down the other side, slip past the walkers and head to the Empire State. Empire State more chance to scout out the groups of the area... more chance of getting caught too"
Kevin heard how Michael said his head wound was just a scratch and that they needed to decided their next move.
“Ok and yes we do need to act fast.” Kevin said as he put everything back in his backpack and swung it back onto his back.
Then he Michael cursed, but came up with two solutions. Heading through the building or still go for the Empire State.
“Well we came to check the groups but also for supplies, so either way is sort of a win and both of them have risks.” Kevin said as he looked around. In the background it was as if he heard a car. “Ssssh, get down I think I hear a car.” Kevin said softly as he already ducked a bit. “Anyways I think you should pick where we go next.” He said as he looked around to see if he could spot the car.

"Watch for walkers, got it." Tory was glad to be of use. Back at home, before all this, it was the responsibility of the front passenger to watch for deer at night. This isn't much different. She thought. Easy peasy. Riding with Steph was alot better than driving alone. She had someone to talk to, someone to watch her back. Tory felt safe.
There was something odd up ahead. "Over there!" Tory pointed down the street, though she was certain Steph could already see. It was hard to miss; more walkers than Tory had ever seen in one place before, and they were all crowded around one building. Oh my gosh, is someone up there?!? The building was a ways down the street, but Tory could make out what looked like a ladder. She hoped that the walkers were unable to climb; otherwise, someone or something is in trouble. Butterflies in her stomach, Tory looked to Steph for a plan.

Michael dropped to his stomach as he had been taught on exercises and listened for the car "Sounds like a big engine... keep low... it could be national guard, could be another group... could be anyone... lets hope they are dumb enough to attract the group of walkers"
He continued to listen for the car "We got the first aid kit, we can try head for the Empire state building... If the car stops below and we can tell if they aint friendly... we go through the building. Car seems friendly or goes past we use the other ladder... sound like a plan?" He rolled over to his back and sat up taking out an energy bar and offering Kevin some.

Hearing Tory's shout, Stephanie slowed down...and blanched at the sight of even more walkers heading down the adjacent street, looking as though they were gathering for a meeting instead of trying to overrun a location. Following where Tory was pointing off to, she caught sight of where the walkers were headed - a building of sorts; straining to get a better look, she could make out what looked like a ladder. It looked for all the world like a classic Catch-22: the walkers couldn't go up the ladder...but whoever was uptop couldn't climb down, either.
Taking a few moments to gather her thoughts - and recover her sense of calmness - Stephanie took a few glances down the adjacent streets. Think, think! she whispered to herself...got it! Looking over towards Tory, she said, "It looks as thought those walkers are all focused on that one ladder...here's the plan: we're going to slowly drive up the street to the next cross-street," pausing to put the Humvee back in gear. Pressing slowly down on the accelerator, they moved forward down thestreet. "If these buildings in New York are anything like the ones down in Baltimore," Stephanie said, "there's more than one emergency ladder and I'll bet it's on the other side of that building. We get there, stop and then yell at the top of our lungs for whoever's up there to climb down as fast as they can."
After a few moments, Stephanie added, "Worst thing that happens: we draw more walkers to the building and we have to go to plan B. Best thing that happens: we rescue a couple of survivors. That sound like a plan?"
Kevin noticed how Michael dropped to his stomach to get out if sight, Kev himself was trying to stay low too as Michael asked. He also told Kevin it could be the national guard or just other survivors and he hoped they would lure the walkers away. “Well it would be good indeed if they would lure them away, but let’s also hope they don’t get killed in the process, we survivors have to support each other, just like you did with me.” Kevin said with a small smile.
Then Michael explained the plan and shortly after he offered Kevin a piece of his energy bar. “Thanks, once more.” Kevin said as he took a piece. “It’s been a long time since I met someone so friendly.” Kev said as he ate the piece. Then they waited to see what the car would do.

"Ya, lets try it." Tory replied. She liked the idea of avoiding the pack, though not as much as she liked the idea of rescuing the people up above. We're gonna save them. The humvee slowly made its way around the building as Tory held her breath. She herself would have probably driven way faster past the walkers. I'd have probably gotten stuck by now. The second ladder was now in their reach. Tory couldn't get her window down so she cracked her door before softly yelling up,"Over here!" The girl than turned her attention to other matters, chiefly the clutter in the back.
I should move my stuff. Tory turned around and stretching forward, slid her bags to the far side of the rear seat. If there's more than two or three we're gonna have seating problems. She thought, she wanted their guests to be comfortable. Peering out the window Tory waited for faces to appear. Please don't make us go up there. Only than did it cross her mind that she should be weary. They can't all be like Stephanie. It was time to wait and see who was up there.

As they made their way around, slowly driving along so as not to draw attention to themselves, Stephanie continued looking for any sort of emergency ladder on the side of the building. There! she whispered, seeing it as they rounded the corner and turned onto the side street.
Coming to a stop, Stephanie stepped out of the Humvee and quickly ran over to check the stability of the ladder system, jumping up and hanging onto the bottom ladder for several seconds. Should be good enough, she mused, adding, if not, we'll know soon enough.
Running back to the Humvee, she climbed in as Tory was just finishing up clearing as much room as she could from the back so that, if there were survivors, they could squeeze inside. Looking over at Tory, Stephanie asked, "Well, we're close enough for anyone to climb down and reach us..." Then she thought, what if whoever's up there can't see where we're at?. Pausing, she asked, "Tory, do you have anything with you we can use to signal whoever's up-top? A flare or anything like that?" It was risky to fire a flare, she reasoned to herself, with all the walkers over on the next street, but she rationalized it by thinking that if, God forbid, it were her and Tory up there, she would want other survivors to try and reach them if possible.
Post by Tory Bournell on Mar 23, 2015 21:09:24 GMT -5
They must not be able to hear us up there Tory reasoned, Or else they don't know we're friendly. "Yeah, I have a flare gun in the bottom of my backpack...I don't have many flares though." Tory replied to Stephanie, already turning to retrieve it. This is becoming quite a workout. She mused as she once again kneeled on the seat and stretched to the back. These things must be made for tall people. Taking a few seconds to rummage through her pack, Tory grabbed the bright orange device and hopped out of the car.
Aiming it high in the sky, Tory squeezed the trigger. Pop! She flinched a little as the bright star illuminated their surroundings on its ascent into the sky. It reminded her of Independence Day fireworks. Pretty, that should hopefully get the attention of the survivors. Tory looked back the way they came; Walkers were already making there way around the corner. "Uh...Steph!" Tory quickly jumped back in her seat. Those survivors better come quick! She wasn't sure how much longer they could safely wait out here.

'Seven rolls of rigid strapping tape, twelve rolls of elastic adhesive bandage, seven boxes of plasters and five rolls of soft bandage, paracetamol, a selection of pain killers, a new pair of scissors and a couple of syringes just in case...'
Lizzy smiled as she counted through her newly stocked sports therapist kit. It had been low, she knew it was low, had been for ages, but she'd been putting off refilling. The final straw was when she used the last roll of soft bandage on her own arm after some idiot from the last group she had been with attacked her with a knife. She had lost it and smashed his knee caps in with her hockey stick but it had meant a quick move from the group and with it the loss of support for a supply run. Lizzy had done her fair share of lone supply runs but never in cities as big as New York. She had tried to stay away from the city as best she could since the start of things but you don't get far on foot and tracking the people who had taken her sister had led her closer and closer to the city anyway.
Her scavenging her taken her through the city to Manhattan and into the NYU Langone Medical Center which was surprisingly untouched. The hospitals and medical centers had been hit first and many survivors decided to run from the cities which left hospitals a dangerous, but often fruitful place, for scavenging medical supplies. When she'd first got there that morning the place had been teeming with walkers. It had taken every bit of cunning and a good helping of skull smashing to get to the items she needed and a few more besides. Happy with the days work she had headed up to the roof to get a good look at the layout of the city. It was always good to know if any streets were blocked or how many walkers there were in one area in case she had to make a quick escape. The empire state building loomed over the city, an constant reminder of when humans were the driving force on the planet. 'Technically I guess we still are.' Lizzy sighed at the irony of it all. It was getting late and she didn't want to be stuck up on a roof all night. Lower floors were dangerous but there were more ways to escape if things went wrong. Roofs tended to have only two ways of escape, the way you came up or jump and Lizzy didn't fancy her chances jumping off this roof. Movement at the bottom of the building drew her attention and she looked to see a stream of walkers stumbling off in the direction of the Empire State building. What was happening? Maybe it was the people who had taken her sister. Suddenly a flare lit up the sky. It wasn't far away, a few minutes if she really ran. Lizzy slung her bag back onto her back and took off down the stairs the way she had come up, hockey stick firmly in her hand, like a mad woman on a mission.

Michael saw the flare go up and looked at Kevin... "Who the fuck are these idiots? That will draw every walker in the city" He then heard a banging sound from near by. Looking at the door to the building he saw the wood being smashed up as the lock began to unhinge "NO TIME... Ladder and whoever's car that is! GO GO GO" Michael went to the door and began shooting walkers through the gaps "You first, you have the bad hand... Ill follow!"
He looked through the door seeing dozens were headed towards the roof through a slim corridor.
Post by Stephanie Harrington on Mar 24, 2015 19:28:53 GMT -5
With the light from the flare illuminating everything around for a good distance, Stephanie kept one eye on the walkers, who were beginning to shamble their way around the corner, and the other eye on the building they were parked in front of. C'mon, whoever's up there, she whispered, glancing up and then glancing down the street every couple of seconds. Leaning back into the Humvee for a moment, she asked Tory, "How far are those walkers from us?" She hated asking but if those walkers got any closer...she didn't even want to think about what they might have to do in that case.
All of the sudden a flare lightened up the sky, shortly after Michael yelled that they where idiots and that walkers would follow. Michael was right, but these people probably did it to help. “They might have noticed us and tried to find a way to contact us, but I agree this wasn’t the best.” Kevin said as he started to run towards the ladder, since that was what Michael said. Kevin kneeled and slowly made his way down the ladder, while Michael was holding the walkers back. “Michael come on!” Kevin yelled as he was half way down.
Once he dropped down he noticed the people in the car, two women. For a brief moment he hesitated, not knowing what their intentions where. But he didn’t have a choice, there where walkers on the roof and walkers coming around the corner making their way to the car. So Kevin looked up. “Michael!” he yelled once more. Then he headed towards the door of the car, he waited there for Michael to join.
