"I hope she changes her mind too. Even if she's just and extra pair I hands it would still be nice to have the help. Seeing the two of you together would have been hot as well. Sadly Itll just be fantasies now," he laughed listening to her sing. He had to say she had a beautiful voice. Before all this she could easily have been a singer. He smiled at her watching her walk, carry the dead foal singing. It looked like a really bad disney movie.
Once the reached the camp Oscar just stared. To see everything they had burned again. It was torture. He spat on the ground and went straight to the jeep. Pulling it open he let her put the dead animal in the back and climb in. Once she was done he got in and roared the car to life. The words written on the walls were still visible. He turned the car and set off down the road. On the stereo loud music played. Oscar had a death grip on the wheel, the tires screeching down the highway.
Kwai nodded at Oscar. She actually agreed that him seeing her and Hannah together would have been hot. Despite her best efforts Kwai was starting to fall for this gruff asshole. After their first meeting when she had shot him she who would have thought that after only a few weeks she would be privately thinking that maybe she should have taken him to bed instead of Hannah. But then having Hannah holding her like that had felt so natural.
If she does come back things are going to get interesting for us, she thought to herself. In that moment she decided that if Hannah reappeared at some point Kwai would make it her mission to get both of them. She needed moments like last night but Oscar challenged her and made her think about things in ways that she would never have done if he hadn't come around. She wanted that growth to continue and for that she needed him.
She threw the carcass in the back of the jeep and then moved around to the passengers side, opening the back for Shadow and then climbing in the front. He had the music blasting and she was tempted to tell him to turn it down but something told her that he needed the music as loud as it was right now.
She had avoided looking at the camp before they loaded up but as they drove away she stared at her home. The bodies of the Chindi still lay, unmoved, on the ground where she had killed them and the words remained all to visible on the bluff. She wanted to kill those men all over again but she reminded herself that she needed to calm her rage. It would do her no good. Though she didn't sob a couple of tears rolled down her face.
"Keep to the main road for a couple of mile. There is a dirt road on the right, by mile marker 82, that we will take. It will probably take us 2 hours to get to the village, and Oscar. Just drive till we pull up to one of the Pueblo's I don't have the energy for tons of walking today."
She laid her head back and decided she would try and catch a little sleep. Though the foal had been relatively light it had still taken a little out of her and she wanted to be at her best when they got to the village. One way or another.
Oscar looked at K'wai as he pulled away. There were tears on her cheeks. He just looked away and focussed in the road. Nothing he could say or do would help. He was never good at comforting. He could protect, but he couldn't comfort, just wasn't him. He gripped the wheel tighter as they drove. Two hours down the road. It would be long, but they could try and rest once they were there. She had been far from her village, farther than he had hoped. Tiring down the dirt road he looked at K'wai. She had closed her eyes, probabaly trying to sleep away what ha happened, gain her strength and move on. He reached for the music and turned it off. He would let her sleep in peace, no need to wake her. She Needed her strength, a good sleep may help. Loosing his grip on the wheel he watched the road. At least they didn't hav to walk. All that walking yesterday had hurt. His leg was on fire, he almost thought the wound tore open. Driving was easier. He would pull up like she said, he wasn't walking any further.
Oscar drove until he saw the village. Reaching over he gently shook K'wai to get her to awaken. "Hey we're almost there," he said pointng to the buildings getting closer.
Kwai woke quickly and looked around. They were almost there but something was wrong. wet her her people were alive or dead there should be something here, even if that something was just Chindi. Maybe their just being cautious, she thought. They could be hiding.
When the Jeep rolled to a stop she started to freak out a little. There were things strewn about that shouldn't be there if her people had died long ago, but also shouldn't be there if her people were alive. She called out in her native language and received no answer.
The hair kn the back of her neck was raised as she went looking around. She went into one of the Pueblo's and what she saw took all of the fight out of her. On the wall was the same message that had been written at the bluff. Worse though we're the two obviously fresh Chindi. They still appeared mostly human, save for the eyes. They were chained to the wall and we're pulling against their chains to get to her. She knew them. They had been distant family.
Her legs buckled out from underneath her and she hit her knees. She continued to fall until she was sitting on her feet and her forehead was touching the dirt floor. Her body heaved with sobs as she realized what had happened.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I could have saved you. I could have been here. I could have done something. It's all my fault. Why didn't I come. Why did I stay in the desert. I should have found you."
In her state she didn't even notice the Chindi coming up behind her. What did she care anyways. She had failed. Perhaps the great spirit was just calling her home.
Oscar followed her into the huts like buildings and looked at the walls. The racists had gotten here first, this could auve been them. The Chindi outside their camp must have been thees people.
He saw K'wai drop to the ground. She was crying, he didn't by know what to do. Ther Chindi chained inside where coming at her. He brought hi spear up and stabbed it in their heads. The Chindi dropped, falling limp like his companion.
He could here growling in te other houses. He left and went into the next one. It was the same as the first. He killed the Chindi and went into the next. It was the same. Every hut was the same.
Oscar came back and joined K'wai. She was still on the ground, he didn't know what to say. Lowering down he placed a hand in her shoulder. "Hey you couldn't have know. It had been two years, how could you have known."
She snapped out of her head and looked up at Oscar. He didn't understand. She had been too scared to come here. To scared to face the possibility that they were dead... and now to find out that they were alive within the last few days... it had snapped something in her. She nodded at him but didn't speak. Not for a second. She didn't trust her voice to mouth words yet. She went to the jeep and grabbed a shovel. Shadow, who hadn't had a chance to come out earlier jumped out and stuck to her side. He could tell that something was wrong and he was in protection mode.
She looked to Oscar.
"I have to bury them. They need a proper burial. Thank you for saving me. I couldn't have buried them if I was dead. Can you collect the bodies."
She walked past Pueblo after Pueblo and into the desert. It was too close, the bodies should be buried further away, but she knew she couldn't get them any further, not on foot. So she started digging. One scoop at a time she dug. It would take forever and she didn't even know how many holes she would have to dig. She knew that even before there had been no more then 100 people in the village so she decided to dig 100 graves. She would then be sure to know that she had enough.
Her mind swam as she dug but it couldn't focus on anything but the digging. One scoop after another, she told herself. She was digging faster than she had thought possible but her hands were paying for it. She had already dug ten graves, deep enough for a body and about 3 feet of dirt. Her hands were bleeding already. She didn't feel it. Pain was unimportant the only thing that mattered was digging. There needed to be enough holes. She cried openly as she dug. She would have to find a prairie eagle, well more then one. Her people needed the burial customs due to them.
Oscar saw her storm out and start digging graves. He just watched her dig and dig. It was like she had for crazy. He saw the hatred and anger. He didn't know what to do. She had snapped, lost it, went Loco.
Oscar went into the firt building and looked at the body. Taking his spear he broken the chain from the Chindi's neck. Blood poured out and he scooped it up in his arms. The body laid limp and lifeless as he stumbled out. His leg was weak and he struggled to walk forward. Placing the body bedside the first grave he kicked it in and let it fall.
Oscar saw she had already dug ten graves. He placed a hand on her shoulder when he saw she was bleeding. "K'wai you need to stop. There's only twenty bodies, you don't need to work so hard."
She looked at him and he would see the tears running down her face. She was obviously cracking now. Her hands shook and she tried to form words but nothing happened. She dropped the shovel, her arms no longer able to hold it properly. Looking down at her hands she finally realized that she was bleeding pretty badly.
"I... just. I can't. I was supposed to be here. I kept putting it off. I just wanted them to be alive."
She zoned out for a second, thinking about all of the times that she had told herself she needed to come here. She had always told herself maybe tomorrow but she had never followed through with it.
"I was afraid, to find them gone... I needed them to be alive... they were, they were alive the whole time. I should have come. My people needed me."
She walked into him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She needed human contact. He smelled manly and it comforted her a little, made her feel more safe.
"You didn't know," Oscar said, "you couldn't have known. If you had been here it would have been you chained up. You survived. You're a fighter, you have to keep fighting." He looked toward her. "K'wai come on. You need to be strong."
Oscar rose and began to walk toward the huts. He couldn't say anything else, he would mess it up further. He would either get her angry and she needed to be alone. Oscar decided he would let her cry out, get out her feelings.
He felt her wrap around him and he pulled her close. "Shh, shh. It's okay," he said feeling her head at his chest. He put his hands on her back and tryed to comfort her. "It will be alright, you did nothing wrong. You killed them, avenged their deaths."
Oscar rested his chin on her shoulder. "Come let's go rest. Take a moment to breath."
Kwai wanted to fight it. She wanted to stay where she was and keep digging. Who cares if her hands bleed. She needed to do it. He was right though. She would have time to do tomorrow, and slower. They were not going to rot overnight and her emotions were in turmoil she clung to his side for a second. She needed his closeness.
"Is there a Pueblo that is clear?"
There should be but she didn't know if he had found one. She didn't want to go to one that had bodies or any of the horrible words scrawled into the stones.
"There is," Oscar said looking at her. He was glad she had agreed. He didn't want to have to force her out of the hole. "I moved the bodies. There is also little blood. I removed a quarter of the bodies, they're piled up." He realized he should stop talking so just stated at her.
Taking her had he pulled her into the pueblo. "You should rest. It's been a long day. I'll stay here with you. There is blankets in the jeep. We can burry the remaining bodies in the morning. Is that alright?" He realized he was still holding her hand an quickly let it go.
"Blankets would be good. We won't need many, the fire will keep it incredibly warm. Do you have a lighter?"
She didn't have the energy to start a fire the traditional way but there was wood right outside along with kindling. The stone would soak up the heat and radiate it back to them. There was a reason that her people had made their homes out of it.
"We will have plenty heat as long as we keep it going."
She had to do something right now. She needed to think. To clear her head at least a little. She moved along with her work. It hurt a little but she was careful with her hands when she picked up the wood and threw it into the fireplace along with some kindling and tinder.
Oscar nodded. He rushed out. Grabbing the blankets from the jeep he threw them down. Looking down at her he leaned his spear against the wall. He didn't know what to say. Pulling the lighter from his pocket he flicked it open. Oscar tossed it her and leaned back.
"You want some food," he asked rasing a brow. He watched her light it and looked down at his feet.
"Hey, are you okay? I know its thought but you're strong. You can get through this," he said taking her hand. He looked into her eyes and smiled.
When he returned she started the fire and was a little excited to see it. There was something comforting to her about a fire, there always had been. He asked her if she wanted some food, and truth be told she was starving. The hadn't really eaten much that morning and now she had worn herself out.
"Food would be... Yes I'm hungry."
Her normal way of talking sounded strange to her right now, almost forced. She tried to force a smile but it didn't work. As he got food she grabbed one of the blankets and wrapped up in it. She sat in front of the flames and just watched them.
"I'll be ok. I'm not now, but I will be."
She held onto his hand, not completely sure why. It just felt right. It felt like it was supposed to be happening in the moment.
Oscar pulled out a small bag and set it on the floor in from of them. It contained smaller items, a flask, gronola bars, chips, crackers, and some applesauce type thing in a jar.
He smiled as he pulled item out and set them in front if her. "Take anything you want," he said. This was his personal srash, one he never usually shared with anyone. It was a backup, incase the group went south. Yet some how he was sharing it with her. Maybe he felt sorry, or maybe it was more primal.
He still held her hand. It was warm and and his finger intertwined with hers. Reaching for the flask he unscrewed it. He had filled it with alchohol from the cabin so it was nice and full. He put it to his lips and took a sip. Offering it to her he smiled, "drink this."
Kwai stared at the stash he had pulled out. She hadn't seen it before which made her wonder. She looked up at him. What was this. She wanted to ask him but had a realization before she did. She remembered a pack of things she had behind the bluff that held things she would need in an emergency. Was this his emergency stash? And if so why was he sharing it with her. She smiled up at him.
"Thank you," she said softly
She looked through it with one hand and grabbed a granola bar. It was all she would need. Her stomach could only handle so much right now. She took a bite and looked up at him as he offered a drink. She hesitated at first but decided that she really didn't care. She had drank with him before and she had enjoyed it. She reached out and took the canteen.
"Your just trying to get me drunk aren't you?" She asked with a laugh. It felt good to laugh.
Oscarwasglad she took some food. He thought she'd have resisted, refused. He watched her take a sip and smiled. He needed her to relax, and was hoping this drink would help.
"Truthfully. Yeah I am," he laughed, "you needed it. Can't be stressed out. Can't have you freaking out again. Figured a drink would solve all that. What's the worse thing that could happen? You loosen up and have a fun night?"
He smirked and took another big sip from the flask. The steel was cold on his lips, but the drink was warm. He smiled and still held her hand.
"We will need to bury the bodies tomorrow but for to ugh you are right. If I try and do anything else tonight I'm just going to hurt myself again."
She looked down at her hands. She was still bleeding a little. She let go of Oscar's hand and dug into her own pack. She got her first aid kit out and grabbed some gauze and ace bandage. She wrapped it around her hands and secured it. After she had she grabbed the flask and took a deep swig. She looked at Oscar. He seemed larger then life to her right now. He had been there when she needed him. He had saved her. She was about to go to him when Shadow muzzled into her. She had almost forgotten him. He had blood around his mouth, Chindi blood.
"Looks like both of the men in my life were busy protecting me tonight. Thank you."
She patted Shadow on the head and then looked at Oscar. She covered the distance between them in a second and leaned up on her toes. She kissed him on the lips and then rested against his shoulder.
Oscar was glad she agreed, he didn't want to have to force her to stop. Looking at her he smiled as she let go and babdaged her hands, "glad you could relax. We'll work tomorrow, it had been a long day already though."
He watched the wolf come in and took the flask. Taking a large swig he felt it burn and the room spin. It had been good to relax, he hadn't gotten to last night as someone needed to be on guard. He let Hanah and K'wai relax last night, now it was his turn.
He saw K'wai walk across the room to meet him and melted into her when her lips touched his own. He pulled back and smiled, "knew you couldn't resist me," he smirked before kissing her again. He pushed her against the wall and continue to kiss her, his lips moving to her neck and then back to her lips.
Kwai let him push her against the wall. She wanted more then anything to anchor herself in the moment and Oscar's kisses were doing exactly that. He smelt manly and strong, things that normally would not be attractive to her. She prefered woman mostly but the right man could drive her crazy and Oscar had somehow pushed that button. She shuddered as he kissed her neck.
When he returned to her lips she wrapped her left hand around his waist and her right hand in his hair, what little there was. She pulled away for a second.
"I have no idea why but yes, you are very sexy outsider."
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
