Kwai woke slowly and found that in the night she had in fact rested her hand on Hannah's. She slowly extricate herself from bed, taking a moment to look down at the woman she had shared a bed with last night. She was attractive, even more so with the memory of them cuddling stuck in Kwai's head. She smiled and slowly left the room.
She headed towards the pantry, grabbed the coffee, water, and a pot before heading outside. Shadow roused himself and looked up at her. She found an empty can and poured some water in it for him. He happily started lapping it up and she set to work building a small fire in the yard. She crisp morning air felt wonderful on her skin as she made a bow drill and quickly started a fire. It wasn't the optimal way to make coffee but she had done it when traveling in the desert enough to know that it worked. She poured water into the pan and started heating it up. When it was boiling she put the grounds up and let it boil for a while.
Oscar had left the room. He pulled his boots on and went to where K'wai was. Yawning he looke at the wolf and smiled. He sighed at K'wai, "where's our guest? Did she skip out on us?" He saw the car and shook his head. "Wonder where they could be."
He stretched out and looked at the Fire. "I'm good I dot want any coffee. You two can share it." He yawned again.
"We should get moving afterwords. Long day ahead of us. Before it gets to hot out after lunch," he said smirking. Even though IT was winter it was still hot here. Hotter than most places.
Hannah woke as Kwai shuffled out of the bed, but feigned sleep. As Kwai shut the door, she moved onto her back and stared at it a moment. She remembered her nervousness as she came int her room the night before, and smiled slightly. After she fell into a comfortable position, which didn't take long against Kwai's curves, she almost instantly fell asleep. She yawned and stretched her arms as long as she could, and flexed her legs so her heel touched her butt as she stretched. She heard Oscar shuffling about in the hallway, steps like his marking him as a man, and decided she should get up as well.
She moved to the side of the bed and slipped on her shoes, which she barely remember taking off, and stood, tapping her heels into place. She shuffled out of the room, feeling a bit of sway from the drink the night before, and headed to where he knew companions were outside. As she walked out to them she waved and curtsied with an imaginary dress. Her hair was majorly unkempt, it seeming to arc over her head from one side permanently, and her shirt hung over her right shoulder. She was relatively sweaty from cuddling with Kwai as the heat finally came around, but that was okay. "Mmmm... Coffee..." She replied to Kwai's preparation as she sat on a large log nearby.
Kwai looked up at Oscar. He had never been afraid of who he was and it was the thing about him that had initially interested her in training her and now it was creating other feelings for him within her and that was difficult because she also found herself interested in the woman who had shared her bed last night. How do you deal with that, she thought to herself. It's not like she could be with both of them. Even in the end of the world was that really possible. She discarded those thoughts. She needed to respond to Oscar.
"She's still here," she said, her mind replaying last night.
"Just let me get some coffee in me and we'll get ready. Don't exactly have much to pack anymore do we?"
The memories of the camp flooded back into her mind. She didn't really want to go back there now, not even for the Jeep but she knew they had to. Just thinking about it made her clench her fists. It had been her home since the early days and to have it ripped out from underneath her like that was like losing everything.
She poured a cup of coffee for Hannah, making sure not to scrape the bottom where the grounds were. It would be strong because of the way it was made and she decided to warn Hannah of it.
"Gonna be a bit strong. Desert coffee always is."
Desert coffee is what her uncle had always called it when they were out. It had become an inside joke for them and mentioning it made her miss him. He was a good man and he had taught her the skills that had let her live as long as she had.
"Shouldn't be too many Chindi in the village. Only very few families used it. Those who's ancestors had. It was one of the villages sacked by Europeans."
"Good tht she didn't run away from us," Oscar said laughing. Just then he saw Hanah come out to join them and he smiled, "sleep well," he asked her, "didn't even see you on the floor this morning. Where'd you go?"
He turned his gaze back to the fire. He then looked at K'wai. "Yeah drink up. We have bodies to burry still too. A lot of these bodies. Unless we don't need to anymore. Evil spirits maybe," he asked raising a brown. "It will be a Cabron to move all these. We'll be lucky to leave before noon."
He looked at the coffee but he didn't think he could handle the taste. "Less Chindi Is good. We can work faster then. Though other Chindi besides the families may have moved there." He bit his tongue, he just had said she won't find he people, shit.
Hannah took the coffee from Kwai graciously, nodding in appreciation as she took the cup from her, "Thanks.." She didn't mind it dark, that's how she drank it in London, but it was the gesture, and friendliness that suddenly got to her. It had been maybe a full day since she first laid eyes on Kwai, and she had already been far far more friendly than she could have brought herself to be to anybody since all of it began. She sipped the hot coffee, and almost burned her mouth. She put the cup to the side to give it some time to cool down.
She watched Oscar and Kwai as they spoke to each other, as her place in the conversation they were having wasn't really there at all. She simply listened and thought as she sat there with her elbows on her knees, and her chin in her palms. She suddenly became scared of where she was. Again, it wasn't because she feared death or the undead, but because she had made it a personal goal not to get close to anybody again. She had always considered herself straight, so last night had surprised her. Maybe it was because of the loss of her husband, but she didn't believe she could feel affection towards a man again. She thought that maybe that's the reason why she was letting a woman in. Even then she didn't know if that was what was happening, but she didn't know if she planned to stick around.

Kwai looked at Oscar with a fear in her eyes that he had not seen. She knew that they were not likely to find any of her people but she wanted to, needed to, hold out some type of hope. In his few words he had sunk her back into reality. There would be no one alive most likely. How could there be. Wouldn't they have seen the smoke signals that she had sent up at least once a month. A single tear slid down her cheek. She tried to hide it by ignoring it. Maybe if she didn't react to it they wouldn't notice. She didn't want to be seen as weak.
"Actually thought about it last night. My uncle told me stories about burning the bodies of enemies and it seems we've got a perfect funeral pyre right behind us. That is if your not planning to stay here Hannah."
She looked at the house as she thought. It had been tainted by so much evil, of that she was sure. To let the structure stand would be an offense to the earth. She wished that she could somehow protect the desert from the fire scar that would result from it but there was no way and she was certain that the earth would replenish it's own now that there were fewer people messing up the world.
"As long as Hannah is ok with it we'll just pile the bodies in the living room, spread the alchohol around and burn the place to the ground."
Kwai walked over to the porch and leaned against it. She whistled for Shadow to hunt. This time he would bring something back for them as well. She hoped he managed to find something big. If he did he would howl and they would have to go find their food, but Kwai was an amazing tracker. He darted off like a flash.
"Shadow is hunting for us today too. Hopefully he takes down something big."
Oscar saw the tear on her cheek. He just looked away. Fuck shouldn't have said that, he thought to himself, so stupid. He liked up at her, "you eat burn the cabin? We can use the fuel from the truck," he said pointing to it. "Save the alcohol."
He sighed, "that saved us hours of work. Plus I'm sure we'll have to dig a grave at the village," he said. He bit his tongue again as he thought to himself, fuck that stupid loud mouth of mine.
He looked at the wolf run off. "Do we wait for him. What if we finish before he's done hunting." He smiled to himself, may have been the first time he called the wolf him instead of it or wolf.
Hannah saw a lot of emotions in the next few sentences shared. She bit her lip, it was way too early in the morning for this shit, she thought. She looked over to her car which was low on fuel, and sighed. She figured it had been long enough for the coffee to cool down, so she brought it to her lips, and drank. She felt energy renew itself in her, and leaned her head back, sighing in exasperation. She gulped the rest down, and sat the cup aside, and then walked towards the house but stopped for a moment to look back at the two, "I need that gas. I'm leaving today. I'll help pile the dead guys up, but then I'm gone."
She rushed into the house, and pulled her change of clothes aside. Once entering the room she slept in the night before, she promptly stripped down and threw her clothes from the previous day in a heap on the floor, not realizing the door hadn't closed all the way, and not caring. She then put on that days outfit and her change of shoes. Once she was done she sprawled herself across the bed and lay staring at the ceiling. She had a lot of thinking to do. As soon as she got up, she planned on throwing her things in her car, dragging the dead bodies 'back' in, and driving away before they even set fire to the place.
"We probably don't need much. Just a little will get this tinderbox going. Make sure we have gotten everything that we need out of there before we burn it."
Kwai drank the last of her coffee, relishing in the feeling that the caffeine gave her. It made her feel alert again like she hadn't in so long. Not that she wasn't alert normally coffee was just that added jolt that she needed. She had been a daily coffee drinker before the apocalypse. Her uncle had always said that her spirit animal made sense because she was a wolf in the morning without her coffee.
"He'll be done far before we finish with the bodies. He is a skilled hunter, though it surprised me at first."
She wished that Hannah was staying but she could do nothing to change it now. The woman had obviously made up her mind and arguing now would be pointless. She knew though that if they parted ways now that they would never meet up again. There was no way that the woman would be able to find the village. She had a thought and went into the house to grab a piece of paper. She drew out a detailed map of the area, working off of memories from the maps that she had once spent hours studying. The map wasn't perfect but it would lead the woman to the village if she ever decided to come looking for them. That was of course assuming that they lived that long. Every trip was dangerous but this one was particularly difficult. There could very easily be more Chindi then Kwai anticipated and if that happened while they were in the ceremonial pit it would spell almost certain doom. There was only one way out of the pit, an old ladder.
Kwai walked over to Hannah and pressed the map into her hands.
"Assuming you don't want to kill your car right," Oscar asked, "your's takes premium. Even if you didn't have premium it could take regular. But putting the diesel of a jacked up truck prabably won't end well chica. I'm not evening he one restoring the car." He laughed, "I know next to nothing about cars. But I know they say don't put that in your tank."
Oscar watched as Kwai stormed off and started drawing a map. "How do you know he'll even find anything? Animals are't the same anymore. Birds don't fly, I assume deer won't be grazing."
He walked over to one of the dead racists. Picking up the man from under his arm he begn to drag the man inside the house. He limps with his leg, the muscle stiff from all the walking they did yesterday. "When you ladies are done drinking your cofeee you can join me."
Hannah hopped out of bed, and out to the porch where Kwai handed her the piece of paper. She simply nodded at her in reply, avoiding her gaze at the same time. Her expression was relatively blank, and lacking the welcoming expressions she had been giving up until that point. She walked out, and took the other side of the walker that Oscar was carrying, "You're mostly right, but not all trucks take diesel. Truth is I wouldn't trust the fuel put in any vehicles nowadays that have been recently used, they could have mixed em. It's smart to stick to unleaded now though, because it's easier to come across. Truth is I didn't think about the type of fuel until you said something. I'll figure something out down the road."
She hoisted the body up, and moved with Oscar. She watched Kwai as she helped him for a moment, and pulled her gaze away. She was being silly, and it was too early to know who these people really were anyways. 'Oscar and Cha'Kwaina', she thought their names. 'You'll do just fine without me.'

"Animals are smart. If you watch closely you'll see them. It's just about knowing what to watch for. Shadow is a hunter. He will find food."
Kwai thought once again about trying to convince Hannah to stay. She wanted to see what happened after the events of last night but it was really a useless endeavor. Hannah seemed convinced that she had to leave. The map that she had given her would lead her to the village if she changed her mind and that was all that Kwai could do at this time. Instead she put her mind to helping get the bodies inside the house so that they could burn them. She picked up one of the bodies and threw it over her shoulder. It was heavy as hell but she revelled in the hard labor, anyways she could take more damage to her body at the moment then Oscar could.
They all worked for about 30 minutes to get the bodies piled into the house. It was exhausting work and by the end of it they were all sweating. She smiled at a job well done and was about to start dousing the house in gas when she heard the howl that told her that Shadow had in fact found and killed something large.
"I told you that he would find something. Think I fed myself only on runs in town all this time?"
Oscar heaved body after body. He was starting to build a sweat. The air was cold, leaving him shivering in his damp shirt. Some bodies were heavy, and required all of them to lift it. All were butchered and bloody, his garment wad grimey and covered in blood by the timer they were done.
Hanah was set on leaving, he didn't blame her. She could trust them, they were strangers. Weird even in this day of age. Though as he watched the women he felt something between them. Something awkward but he couldn't place it.
Oscar heard the howl and looked at the fire still burning. "Light the building now," he asked looking toward where he heard the howl. "We can collect the food during the burning.
Hannah watched as the last body was thrown in, and the morning neared midday. She went to pumping diesel from the truck with a makeshift siphon she had put together herself. The tank filled quickly. She was almost surprised at how much fuel the men had gathered, or maybe it was that they rarely used the truck in the first place, who knew? She filled the tank up in a matter of minutes, and brought the tank to the home, and starting from the back dousing it heavily from top to bottom. She had to get another fill before she was done, but it didn't take her long. Taking a branch, a rock, and some dry leaves, she sparked a fire from the line of fuel she made to the inside.
She took a few steps back and watched the trail burn, and quickly reach the house. She stood close in between both of her new acquaintances, and almost took their hands without realizing it. She quickly shrugged it all away and began walking to her car. "Well, I've stayed longer than I said I would." She ducked down into the drivers seat of her car, and revved it up. She rolled the passenger side window down, and gave them a final farewell. She thought of many things she could have said, but all she could mutter was, "Don't die." After saying goodbye, she quickly rolled up all the windows, and drove off past visible range.
Further down the road, she stopped, and bashed her steering wheel a few times. She felt angry at herself, but her thoughts and feeling swirled so confusingly in her mind that she didn't know why. After a quick sigh, and a slap to the face, she continued down the road.

Kwai watched the house catch fire and stared at it for a second. She was glad that it was done but now it was time for them to get going. They needed to go collect the kill that Shadow had made.
"Alright let's get going. We have a ways to go and we're burning our daylight. Without Hannah it will be harder."
She started moving towards the area that she had heard the howl. Shadow would have eaten himself before he made a kill for them. Kwai had trained him to do as much after the first time he had brought her a kill that was completely useless to her. She had done what she could to try and clean it but had ultimately left him to his kill.
He wasn't far off and it didn't take them too long to reach where he was. It was a foal but it would be more then enough for their needs.
Oscar watched the fried burn. It wasa beautiful sight. The way the flames flickered and grew. It would take a while for the entire cabinto burn down. He knew they wouldn't be here to see it finish. He just hoped the fire would stay to the building, would burn anything around it. He smiled to himslef, they had gottne their revenge. It started with the buring of his camp, and ended with theirs. He turned his head and watched Hanah drive away. He didn't actaully expect the women to leave. This came as a shock to him. He only knew her for a short time, and she was gone.
K'wai said somethinf and he listened, "you're right we best get moving. You know these lands. What's the fastest route to the jeep?" He followed her towards the wolf and his kill. It was small, but it would be a good eating tonight. "Do we drag it back to the jeep," h asked nodding. "Let get going. As you said, daylight to burn."
Kwai thought for a minute and then pointed along the Ridgeline. It was the same formation that formed the bluff she had set her camp against to block the wind.
"We keep that ridge to our right and when it turns we will be at camp, and the jeep. It should take us less then half the time that it took to get here. I'll carry the foal."
As she said this she knelt down and ruffled Shadow's fur, petting along the ridge of his back.
"Good job Shadow. We will need the meat and you saved me a hunting trip of my own."
She rose and as she did she threw the foal over her shoulder. It was lite enough that she it didn't noticeably slow her. She wondered where her mother was but she had to let it go. She started walking towards the ridge. She would turn far before she reached it but she would use it as a guide.
"Keep to the ridge line got it," Oscar said looking at the dead foal. "Once at the jeep you can throw it in the back. Ill keep the top down to air it out and we can make some good time to your village. How close can I bring the jeep in? If I bring it right up to the gates will that be a sin?"
He stared walking after her, letting her lead te way. The wolf had done good, he smiled at it as he limped along. "So sad to she the girl leave," he asked as they followed the ridge. "I'm sure you to enjoyed last night. When I got up to take a piss I saw she wasn't on the floor. I put two and two together," he said laughing. "Was she as hot undressed as she was dressed?"
Kwai didn't know what to say to him about the Jeep. It would be far safer if they could just pull the jeep up to the village and it's not like vehicles had never been there before.
"You know you might be teaching me as well outsider. Maybe I am too strict."
She let the words linger in the air as they walked. It was a nice day, the cold winter air kept the desert reasonably cool and she was enjoying the walk. She didn't even realize it but she sang as she walked. It was one of the oldest songs of her people and the words were a mystery to her. Much of her ancestors history had been lost and the meaning of thus song was one of those things that had dissappeared. She sang it when she needed to find peace. There was something oddly reassuring about singing a song that you knew every word of but had no clue what it meant.
"Believe it or not nothing happened. She curled I'm behind me and went to sleep. I didn't even get to see her naked, which was a real shame."
She thought for a while about what they were about to do. Part of her said that there was no way her people would still be alive. They had probably died long ago. Another part of her maintained some small hope that she would be greeted by the faces that she knew so well.
"I gave her a map. It will show her the way to the village if she changes her mind. I for one hope she does."
