Mac stood in front of one of the walls, inspecting it. It was one of many he had observed today to see what could be improved. One thing was for certain; the construction was solid and could withstand a large group of walkers pushing against it, but like Damon had done when he first arrived it could easily be scaled by human opponents. The height was good but they needed to put barbed wire on top.
He went up the ramp and looked over the wall. Putting up spikes pointing forward in a 45 degree angle would also make any potential walker run into them and get them stuck, leaving the shooters in the tower to deal with a target that was stationary instead of moving around. Still, that couldn't be done as long as there wasn't any barbed wire on the wall, as putting up such spikes would probably make it easier for human to climb them.
But Mac realized it was probably best to have it all written down. Ellen had said Charlie was going to meet him and take notes but the girl was running late and Mac wanted to really get started. If Charlie wasn't going to come find him, he'd go and find her.
It didn't take too long before he had found her, talking to the weird black guy that had disappeared for two weeks, the one that got drunk and was put in the goat pen when they first arrived. Mac couldn't help but wonder why the guy wore a mask, it seemed a bit obsolete.
Going in closer, Mac heard how the man threatened his daughter's best friend. And knowing Charlie, Mac also knew the girl was only going to take so much verbal abuse before attacking the man. Since Ellen clearly cared for Charlie, Mac wasn't about to let that happen. Also, he knew Charlie couldn't afford to lose face in front of the other guards; she was Ellen's second-in-command and on top of that a very capable fighter. It wasn't until the man mentioned Ellen that he had gotten Mac's undivided attention. Mac knew that Ellen cared deeply for Charlie, and her body language and behavior toward Charlie spoke for itself as well. He wouldn't care if Ellen was a lesbian, as long as she was happy. And if Charlie made Ellen happy, then Mac wasn't about to let anything happen to her.
Mac walked up and stood in front of Charlie and toward the man in the mask but stayed out of arm's reach in case he decided to try anything. But if he did, Mac would be happy to oblige and teach him a thing or two about common courtesy toward those of the opposite sex.
"Easy there Slim." Mac said. "You're gonna kill this girl? How'd you think that'll work out for ya? I mean look around; you're all alone and she's the one with the army behind her. Even if you're able to kill her quickly, what do you think'll happen? You think you can escape this place? There's six guards in between you and the front gate. If you're fast you might be able to pass the first and second, maybe the third. But by the time you reach number four, number five and six will already have taken aim at you and probably fired a couple of shots at you and considering your height some are bound to connect. And that's if the guys in the towers haven't sniped you by then."
A couple of guards had caught wind of what happened and had rallied behind Mac and Charlie. One of them gestured at the guy in one of the towers to keep an eye out as well.
"Oh but mister McAllister, I don't intend to go through the gate! I'll just jump the wall." Mac continued, implying what Hykeem was about to say. "Well good for you son, but there might be some flaws in that plan. For starters, you have to get there. No matter which wall you decide to jump, there'll always be two towers that'll have a clear shot on you. And unless you're able to jump up 13 feet, you're gonna have to climb the wall, thus slowing you down giving the snipers in the towers more time to aim at you properly and shoot your ass."
Mac was almost done with his theory on the consequences of Hykeem killing Charlie, although if the man was smart he'd already seen how killing Charlie would be a mistake.
"But let's assume that for some magical reason you make it over the wall." Mac said. "You'd have to run at least 800 yards before you're out of reach from the towers and even then you'll just die tired. You'll be on foot, they've got cars, supplies and ammo to last for days and there's only one way out of this area and that's through the trailhead. And even past the trailhead it'll take miles before you'll reach someplace you can hide, leaving them enough time to hunt you down and kill you."
Mac put his hands on his side, his right hand closer to his holster than his left, just in case.
"So do yourself a favor Slim and back away." Mac said. "This is not something you can win."
