Julie was finishing up a long shift. It was three years before the world would rip itself apart. Three years before the dead would rise and the living would fall the rotted finger grasping for them in the dark. It was before all that when life was simple. Life was normal. Life in these times ment surviving work, not surviving another day. Julie had just barely survived work. She drove for a medical transport company called South East Medical. She didn't have any classes that night, she literally had the night to herself. A rarity. She didn't even know what to do. She was so used to working her little fingers to the bone that when she had a moment to breathe it made her long for the hard hours and endless cramming to become a certified EMT. Julie was 20 years old. The world stretched out before her and she could do absolutely anything with her life. Or so she thought. Julie didn't realize that her life would spiral out of control. She didn't realize that life as she knew it would cease to function and she'd be thrust into a world of chaos and survival by any means necessary. Julie turned in the keys to the ambulance she was driving. Julie checked her phone as she walked back to her little Miata. She had no new messages. The life of a single girl she thought with a sigh as she quietly sipped her Starbucks frappe. She set the drink on the roof and opened the door before opening the door and getting inside the car. Julie sipped her drink only to find it empty.
Julie: Well ain't that just nice? I gotta stop by the store get some wine.
She told herself as she started the car and drove off. She was going to get a nice box of wine and mindlessly flip through her tender app as she watched Netflix. Pretty depressing. She had no prospects of a life outside of work and school and it showed. Julie made it to the store and tossed her empty cup in the waste receptacle outside. She headed in and the woosh of air blew her hair around. Julie stopped and ran her fingers through it quickly. She didn't want to look like a mess. She crinkled her nose and pushed up her glasses on her face and walked past a man who was checking out at the register. The man turned to watch her walk by. The man decided he no longer needed groceries and told the cashier. "Set it aside and help the next guy, I just remembered something I forgot." The cashier shrugged and moved his stuff before moving on to the next guy. Why should he care? He was just; like everyone else, trying to survive another day at work. The man followed Julie down a isle. Julie was in the wine isle, casually browsing what looked like it would get her a nice heady buzz before she called it a night and went to sleep. The man pretended to be interested in something on the shelf behind her, and when he thought it was safe he took a glance at the radiant beauty in the glasses. He had never seen someone so beautiful. Someone so irresistible. He had to know more about her. The man was named Zane, and he had a pension for becoming possessive and obsessed. He had several restraining orders out on him already, but his rich parents normally skirted away any trouble that he found himself in.
.
Julie looked pretty no matter if she was just getting off a long shift, or she hadn't slept in days. It was a natural beauty that she was born with and this had caught the man's eye. Julie found something to her liking and pulled it down off the shelf, she almost dropped it when her phone went off. It was her brother he wanted to know if she was going to be home soon.
Julie: Opps!
Zane swooped in like a gentleman and caught her wine before it could shatter against the supermarket floor. Julie looked at him stunned, he had moved so fast she barely even had time to react but he rushed from the other side of the isle to get it. She was impressed. Julie smiled at him kindly and he smiled back, misunderstanding her polite smile for genuine romantic interest.
Julie: Oh my! That was quite impressive ya know. You saved my buzz tonight, i'm greatful.
Zane: Oh don't mention it miss uh....
Julie: Julie.
Zane: My that's a beautiful name.....
Julie saw his smile getting a bit pervy and she smiled awkwardly back.... she was getting uncomfortable now. Julie took the box from him and looked down at her phone. It went to voicemail. She'd call him back. Julie scooted around Zane and excused herself, the situation was getting weird.
Julie: Well.... Uh thanks again.
Zane: It was my pleasure! *He called after her as she walked away and started to get back on her phone to call her brother back and tell him about the creepy supermarket guy.* ........Julie. * Zane said to himself softly as if he cherished the name.*
Julie left the supermarket that night and had a glass of wine, or three and fell asleep on the couch half covered up in a throw blanket watching some Netflix original drama. She wouldn't remember the encounter in the supermarket. Zane would never forget it.
