Abby didn't like not going with Max, but she didn't have to worry long. She got mad when she recognized the name of the man who shot him, "You are the one, you asshole!" she glanced at the other two and stood firm, expecting them to gang up with their friend.
Charlie came out then and he mumbled something and then struck the guy in the side of his head. She felt a swell of victory in her chest as she scurried to follow behind him, 'Charlie, what is going on? Where is Max?"
Her eyes closed. A sigh escaped her lips as she didn't move from the spot. Thinking over everything that she had seen and heard from these people. It gave her a well enough idea of what type of people she with. People she didn't want to be around when there behavior was their own down fall. Sab hoped at least not all of them would die like the kid... but some people it seemed too likely such as Max. Biting her lip as she stood there with her final decision being made. "As much as i wanted to be with a group.. I never want to be with barbarians." She mumbled to herself as she walked toward the fort or whatever it was. "So if I could please ask for a vehicle if that isn't too much to ask? " Asking whoever she could knowing if she couldn't get one then she would leave immediate like she already planned for.
(Yeah... so umm i didn't know who to ask for a car and i assumed she couldn't just take one. So umm Charles I will take you up on the car mentioning in your post... sense she will leave immediately after getting it.)
"Max is in with someone that knows him. I don't know much else about what is going on. The guy seemed alright and if they're keeping him safe they can't be all bad, he's missing a leg."
He motioned for them to start following him but was stopped in his tracks when Sabita asked for a car, apparently she wanted to leave. Charlie didn't care one way or the other and if she was going to leave now was as good a time as any.
"Can someone get her some damn keys. There are more intact civilian vehicles out there then you could hope to need."
Sam smiled and reached into his bag. He threw her the keys.
"Black 4 door sedan. It's in good shape and has half a tank."
With that done the continued into the room where Max was.
Once the man left Brian turned to the man on the bed. He was amazed, he thought Max was long gone. When they had parts ways max was in bad shape, despite the shot he looked better. Brian smiled as he moved to his side.
"I just...I just can't bilieve it. You had left. How did you know I was here," Brian asked looking at the man.
He looked at the wound. "Let's get you fixed up," he said moving in his crutches and bringing over various supplies in a bundle. He displayed them on the bed beside Max. "Alright let's get that jacket off and tut shirt. I'll patch the wound and then you rest. I'll bring in food, Louis has the best cooking around. His gumbo is to die for. Well not literally but, you know."
When Max removed his jacket and shirt Brian went to work fixing the shot. He added disenfectant and then removed the bullet. He didn't baby it, he knew Max could handle it. He added some more disenfrctant and pulled some thread as he began to sew the wound closed. When he was done he applied bandages and wrapped up his shoulder. It was done in no time, the wound fixed and in stable condition.
"Max who are these people. They are good people right. Amber the ways he runs things here, it's good. But we are nearly defeated. Not sure how much more hoardes and bandits we can take. It's like this place is a magnet for them. We have ammo an food. But it's almsot not worth it to stay."

Max had to blink a few time. It couldn't be true. He saw him die. That kid, the freak. He had killed him. Brian had been covered in blood, he wasn't breathing. Max smiled at his old friend.
"Bri, it can't be. You were dead. I left," he looked down, wincing as he did. "I'm sorry. I should have checked. Just with ellen...," he trailed off his face saddened. "I didn't know you were here. On of the people I'm with, Charles, he was a high up army general or soemthing. He kee this place was supposed to be stock. This was just a run. This is still all to much."
He listens as Brian gave him orders to fix him. He slowly pulled off his leather jacket and shirt with Brian's help. He sat there as brian went to work. His hands gripped the medical bed harder as the bullet was ripped out. Luckily it was a clean shot, bullet didn't splinter out. Didn hit bone or anything vital. It was when Brian was sewing him he realized, his shoulder was just getting better and some asshole went and fucked it up again.
Max listened to his friend ramble, "Brian. Brian, listen. They're good. I wouldn't be with them if they weren't. Charles is military like you, Abby is like me, and Sarah is nice, you'll like her." He smiled as he started to mention the little crew he ha gotten, "and there's a kid, a builder named Declan, and Sab, she's a hunter. They all aren't her and I only just met a few of them, but they're good people."
Just then he saw Charles walk in. "Charles this is Brian. Brian Charles." He saw Abby behind him and smiled, "that's Abby. I told you about Brian remember. You thought I was gay," he laughed as he said that, knowing very well that that she knew he wasn't now. He winced as he laughed, the pain hurt but he could manage.
Abby followed behind Charlie, and had taken Jay by the hand and was leading him with them. No way she was leaving the kid to wander about alone. She dropped the hand and pushed past Charlie when she finally saw Max. She surged into the room and came up short, right next to Brian, stopping herself from hurting Max by hugging him. She glanced at Brian, and then frowned at Max, 'I didn't know, the way you spoke about him, I assumed , alright." She was feeling the heat rise in her face, and turned her head. She moved back a bit, "Is he alright?" She stared at the bloody gauze and stuff on the small table next to the bed, "I mean, this is gonna heal and he will be fine, right?" She suddenly felt sick, seeing the blood. Max's blood. She closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. She opened her eyes, and then glanced at Brian, 'What sorta place is this? I mean, that guy shot him for no reason" her voice was rising a little. She glanced at Charlie, "Can we just get the supplies and go, please?" She looked at Jay, "I wanna get back home, to Sarah, and let Jay meet her."
"A pleasure I am sure Brian, too bad we could not meet under better circumstances. I'm glad you patched up Max. Need our muscle in thus group," Charles said with a chuckle. He patted the man's good shoulder.
He let Abby talk to Max and motioned for Brian to come talk to him. He wanted to get a feel for this group and the best person to do that from would be Brian. He was Max's friend and he seemed like a good person.
"So what is the situation here, your group seems small. How are you holding the base?"
"Wait she thought me and you were. Oh God," Brian laughed. "No he had just saved my life. We were Bestfriends. I owe everything to him." He said smiling. "It's a pleasure to meet you both," he said as he moved over and lokked at the girl who came in. "His wounds will heal. He may need to baby it for a little while. Give it a week or so and it should be just fine. He's tough, I'm sure you all know that."
He didn't answr Abby's last question instead joined Charlie out in the hall. He held himself up on his crutches. "We are a small group. Barely any of us. Truth is we are barley holding up. We lost good people. Three just in this last week. The bandits keep coming, and the hoarded seems attracted to here. We try our best but we are beat. Max said you were in the military, may I ask your rank. We have supplies here, vehicles, weapons and food. Not sure if we can spare any, we can barely make it with what we have. Bandits are the main problem. The signs all point to here, it's large and visible from the road. They walls have held though."
"Max is a good guy but his memory is shit sometimes," he said laughing.
He was nervous about giving this guy his title though the fact that he was former military relieved some of his doubt. Thus man had probably had to do questionable things himself.
"I wasn't military. I was Department of Homeland Defense. We took point when the outbreak happened. I was Director of Policy Enforcement. We had already lost most of the cabinet when I left. The extermination center got overrun because commander wanted to be 'humane' and instead of shooting them he injected them with a lethal injection."
He let the revelation sink into the man. He seemed much softer then Max but that could be a wrong assumption.
"I was responsible for seeing the extermination order carried out. Not all of the field commanders wanted to follow that order."

Charles made a joke and he laughed, "easy Pres, can't have that grip wrecking my other shoulder." He laughed as he laid back on the bed.
He saw how worried Abby looked. He reached out to take her hand, "I'm fine. Minor wound," he said lauging.
When Charles and Brian stepped out in the hall Max looke at Abby, "I'm sure we can elave right away. It's been a long day. We might be best to leave tomorrow . I don't want any of us driving in the knight and night. It's gettig dark so we should stay the night. Plus Brian said they don't have much supplies. They are weak here. I assume that's why he shot. Brian said bandit attacks are frequent, that they can't take any chances anymore."
Abby glanced at Jay, "No, I want to leave, and soon!" She looked back at Max, 'They shot you! If they don't have supplies, then we should just go, what's the point, and that truck is safe , even at night. I would rather be in there then in here." She looked around the medical room, the place seemed cold, empty and she trembled a bit."I don't like this place, and I am not sure if we can trust these people, Max."

"With charles concussion and my shoulder we may not make it home," Max said sitting up in the bed. "I want to leave too. But it will take well into the night to get home. We had all gotten up early. It's been a long day. I'd rather not fall asleep behind the wheel and crash the knight." He looked at her, "we are better off not driving anywhere. If you want to sleep in the knight you can. Though in sure there better places than here in the medical room." He smiled, "I trust Brian. He wouldn't let harm to come any of us. He knoe we're good people. That shot was a misunderstanding. Look at how the female interacted. She was angry. That means she never wanted to hurt us. So just the sniper is to worry. Where is he anyway? He hadn't done anything to else has he? Have you seen him?"
Abby stared at Max, and finally nodded, "Fine, you win." She sighed and couldn't help but giggle when he asked about the sniper, "Well, Charlie hit him, and when we came inside he was on the ground." She grinned at Max, 'So, I don't know where he is right now." She glanced over at Jay, 'they guy was trying to keep us from coming inside. He was being such an asshole." She moved over and leaned against the stretcher a bit, 'So, you trust Brian, even though you haven't seen him in awhile, still think he is gonna have our backs?" She locked eyes on Max, 'you had me scared to death, you know that." She reached out and trailed the back of her hand over his cheek, 'Look, I just don't want anyone to get hurt , this wasn't what Charlie talked about."
"Does Max still have those idiotic ideas? And fits of rage," Brian asked laughing. "Bad memory seems to fit him."
"Was actaully hoping you'd have been military. I never followed the politics and positions of the people at the top. But you said you were there to assist with the killing," he shook his head, not something he wanted to discuss. "Must have been tough. Couldn't imagine something like that being easy."
He looked down, he didn't have anything else to say. "You said the cabinent had fallen? Guess the goverment was up in hell at the time. Not that any of the matter anymore. If max trusts you, so do I," he said extending his hand. "I'm Brian Green. And army medic."

"Surprised you didn't lay into him allstar," Max said smirking. "I do trust Brian. Even though I haven't seen him in awhile I know he hasn't changed. I left him I thought he was dead. I would trust him with my life. Maybe it's guilt. Maybe it's stupiditiy. All I know I I trust him. Can't say the same with the others."
He smiled as she came to his side, "you didn't need to be scared. I'd never leave you," he laughed. When she touched his cheek he placed his hand over hers. "Charlie didn't know what to expect. He wouldn't have guessed theted be peopple here. But what does it matter. People or sinners. We have a chance to loose people either way. Chalrie proved that earlier. If these people are good people maybe we could use some of them. A doctor would definetly be useful. Maybe not now but in the long run. Say nine months from all this."
Charles laughed at Brian's assessment of Max. He was dead on. The man was capable but he had his moments where he confused Charles.
"He clocked a girl for insulting Abby. Course she ended up being bad news anyways. We dumped her on the way here, she was completely unstable."
He offered his hand to the man. And assuming it was returned he shook it firmly.
"It was rough. I did what I had to but it wasn't something that I did without some guilt. I will carry those people with me forevor."
He stewed on the previous comments about the health of the base. He didn't know why they had stayed here so long. It was perhaps the stupidest thing he had heard. They didn't have half the people that it would take to keep this base. Even if he were to bring his people there they wouldn't have enough.
"You can't stay here. You will all die. There are too few of you to hold a base thus large. Someone will come and take it from you or a horde will overrun it. You would need a small army to hold this place."
Brian was glad the man shook his hand. "I fully agree with you about this place. We shouldn't even have made I this long," he said sighing. "Amber's tough, but the rest of us are weak. We can't make it much longer. We've expressed concern. We just don't know where to go fom here. We thought maybe a smaller community, search for something. I knew a girl who wanted to go to islands down south. It sounded good but never fell through. We did have a small army at one point. A civilian army, but still an army."
Amber walked down the hall towards the two men, "what we're you two discussing," she asked folding her arms. "The man Pete shot. Is he okay?"
"He's fine," brian said leaning on his crutches. "Resting inside. Charles here was telling us on how we should leave. That we don't have the manpower to stay. And I have to say I agree with him."
"Charles was it," Amber asked extending her Han towards him. "Don't think we were formally introduced. I'm the leader here. We kept this place running. We just don't know where to go from here. May I ask where you travelled from? By how little men you have I assume this wasn't your final destination."
"You should have abandoned it but I understand. You find something in this world, something tangible, you hold onto it like it is everything. If you do that though you die. You have to know when to leave."
Amber came in and started asking questions. She was a lieutenant and it showed. She got straight down to business and Charles respected that. He met her eyes.
"The name is Charles Basil, Director of Policy Enforcement with the Department of Homeland Security. Not everyone in my group knows that and I would appreciate it if it stayed that way. And before you ask, as far as I know the government fell."
He thought about lying to them about where they were coming from. It was dangerous to trust people. People were worse then growlers in this world but these ones seemed ok. They seemed like good people who were at the edge of their ropes.
"We have a farm. Came here for supplies; Food, guns, ammo, and most importantly medicine. We're trying to fortify the farm, build a wall and if we're lucky run electricity across it."
"We just kept holding out. Waiting for something," Amber said folding her arms again. "Guess we expected military to role in, make it all better. It was foolish. I'm not sure what supplies we can spare. Hard enough as it is we need everything we have. I don't want to make your trip for nothing, but it my have been. Best I can do is give you a few guns and a crate of ammo." She bit her lip and looked at him, "sorry we only have so much to spare."
Brian looked from Amber to Charles and then sighed, "I want to come with you. Back to the farm," he said with a sigh.
"I'm afraid I can't let you do tha Brian. Loosing you would be a shock to our system. Why don't we just think it over. I'm sure your group doesn't want to drive in the dark. You can stay the night. Sleep on your decisions. You can depart in the morning. Get a nice warm meal. Enjoy some company. One night shouldn't hurt," Amber said smiling.
"That sounds good. I can get Louis to cook something for us all. How does Spaghetti sound, or Gumbo. Both are really good. Swear that man could cook anythig," Brian laughed. "What do you say Charles, will your group stay the night. I'm sure you're eager to get back. I know you left people at the farm. But as Amber said, one night can't hurt."
Abby stared at Max as he spoke. He was swaying her until the crack about her being pregnant. It took allshe had to not slug him in his arm." max!" She glared at him and pulled her hand away from his." Look,it is what it is,you have to not worry over that or you are gonna drive me nuts!" She glanced at Jay,then gave Max a look. Why did he say that infront of the kid. " we can stay the night ,but inthe morning I wanna leave,I am gonna talk to Charlie." She backed away feom the bed and was going to go look for Charlie. She didn't like them being separated for to long.
