The days had been uneventful enough. Darynn was growing healthy, her chubby little hands grabbing at anything that fell within her range. Fable’s long hair had more than once been the culprit and she had eventually resorted to keeping it up in a knot at the back of her head and away from grasping baby fingers. Cedric was wonderful with her, at times able to calm the screaming babe even when she couldn’t. Fable was adjusting to motherhood well, and was feeling completely better now after the difficult birth. She still wasn’t accustomed to having others do her bidding…or ordering them to do so. But the maids seemed rather understanding that she was just a meek soul and were starting to know what the queen wanted before she even ask.
She was outside their quarters and sitting in the lush grass. Darynn sat in front of her on her mother’s gown. Just recently she had been able to hold her head upright without help. Fable had a hand on each side of her to hold her steady as her tiny fingers grabbed at the bright emerald blades just out of reach. She made soft sounds of frustration, waving her chubby arms faster at the grass she couldn’t get. Fable laughed but turned when a shadow fell over them. She looked up to see one of the older maids with a smile on her wrinkled face. “My Queen you should rest and take some time for yourself, let me care for Darynn a bit.” She was capable….Fable knew that. But she was still hesitant.
Eventually she complied. Handing the happy curly headed little babe up to the maid who was already making cooing sounds and bragging on her beauty. She was in good hands…Fable stood after her daughter had been whisked away, dusting her gown off and set out to move around the village. There was the sounds of a blacksmiths hammer….the angry neigh of a horse….the loud clattering of swords as men and women alike sparred. She hadn’t had the chance to really look around much…she was happy in the company of her daughter and Cedric when he could spare the time. But even now as she moved through the people she found her gaze searching for a familiar face she still longed to see.
William.
But it was silly to think she would ever see him again….he was likely somewhere with his sister….she could only hope they were safe. The others also. Her thoughts had distracted her and Fable suddenly felt herself bump into someone. She quickly stepped back, apologies immediately springing from her lips.
