Sarah stood on the porch and watched til she couldn't see the truck anymore. <God, please keep them safe and bring them home to me, Amen> She turned and went to find Declan. They needed to get started and to form some kind of a plan , just incase anyone showed up besides the growlers. She knew he might not be happy with her right now, because of how she had flipped out, but they only had each other til the others came back.
Declan got up from the chair walking out of the hall, he stepped out of the doorway just in front Sarah. "Oh hey, I'm ready to start when you are, I just need access to the wood you guys found and my axe." He said, his axe would be needed in case they need more wood or a growler showed up. He checked his tools in his tool belt, a hand drill, hammer, saw, screwdriver and a spanner. Declan wiped his eyes, he had been half asleep on that couch but was fine now.
Sarah smiled at Declan,"alright I think Charlie put it in one ofthe boxes in the kitchen." She was a little nervous." Do you wanna get some wood from that tool shed, workshop thing,or should we see if we can get the tractor to work and maybe try to drag some trees over?" She wasn't even sure if the tractor would run,bit the noise."ya know, maybe we better stick to whatever lumber we have out there til the others get back,I dont wanna make too much noise." She started out the back door to show him the workshop.
He nodded at her and went to get his axe, he searched finding it then returned. "Right continue." He listened. "Yeah you're right a tractor would be too noisy, the lumber it is." He said as she led him to the workshop, he gave an impressed look, there was a lot of wood in there. "That's a lot, that will cover the securing of the doors and whatnot easy." He then turned back to Sarah. "Right, what do you need done first?" He asked, he would do as much as he could in the first day so he could sleep well in the night.
Sarah smiled at him,he seemed rather easy going about things, and it helped her to relax around him. She wanted to do as much as they could."well,we have power so long as the generator holds out." She walked over to a pile of boards in the far corner."how about we do the windows,I don't think we should block them off completely, but maybe make some slats, hard to hit ,but we could shoot out them if we needed to." She looked at him ,and he would be able to tell this was worrying her,"I've never had to do anything like this before,so I can help, but you are gonna have to walk me through it,sorry." She looked at his tool belt,"I mean,I don't know much about hammering in nails, but with that, shouldn't be too hard." She started to rummage around and found nails and screws and a power cord."what else do we need?"
"Right so like a few planks over the windows with a gap for the barrel of a gun? That should be easy enough." "Don't worry I've had to teach people before. I don't think we need anything else all of that should be enough. Right i'm going to grab a handful of these planks." Declan said as he moved forward, squatting slightly so not to throw his back, he threw a pile of 6 planks onto his shoulder and grabbed them with his free hand. "Right, what window first?" He asked as he lifted using his legs mainly. He'd been taught the proper way to heavy lifting for a course at work.
Sarah smiled at him. Declan was being nice and not treating her like dead weight for this project. She glanced at him,"um, probably the ones downstairs around the front first. Then we can work on the sides and finally the back." She stayed well behind him to give him space with the boards. She didn't need to accidently knocked out. Once they reached the front she set the things down in the swing."i will go and see if I can open the window to run the power cord and maybe find a step stool for the top half of the windows." She paused at the screen door,"thank you,Declan,I appreciate all your help." She went inside and into the living room. Sarah had to move the furniture a bit to get to the window, bit finally managed. The windows were old and wanted to catch and stick but she got it up about two to three inches.
"Okay" He replied as she said the downstairs, front ones. She also said she'd open the windows but then thanked him. "No problem." He responds as he sets down the planks and puts the axe down. He pulls out the tape measure from his tool belt side pocket and started to measure the windows and planks. "Thanks for opening the windows" Declan said as he measured a plank. He then hoisted it up leaning it over a chair. "Right i'm going to cut this to size to go across the window. Can you do the power chord while I do that?" He asks looking at her holding his saw in one hand and the plank in the other steadying it on the chair.
Sarah poked her fingers out of the crack in the window, "Hand me the power cord and I will plug it in, then go find a step stool or something for you to stand on." She waited for him to thread her the cord, then plugged it in and closed the window til it was snug and holding the cord in place.
Sarah went back to the kitchen and started looking for a step stool. She went to the utility room and found a plastic one slid in between the washer and dryer. It wasn't much but it would have to do. She came back out to the porch carrying it, 'This is all I could find. " She frowned, and glanced at him. She was obviously worried it wasn't what he would need and she had failed.
Declan grabbed the power cord, he started threading it to her then when it was all done she went to the kitchen returning with a small plastic step stool "It'll do, I don't need too much extra height to reach the tops of the windows." He said as he took it off her and put it by the first window. Declan walked over to the window and placed the plank over it, it covered most the lower part. "Hey Sarah can you pass me a nail please?" He asked as he pulled out a hammer. "Also can you hold the left side of the plank aswell." He asked as one of his hands rested on the right side of the plank, it slightly was wider then the window but it wouldn't matter, it would probably make it sturdier.
Sarah was thrilled he wanted her help. It gave her something to take her mind off of everything else. She grabbed a few nails and handed them over to him, then moved over and took hold of the other end of the wood.
Sarah had grabbed her 1911 and brought it out with her too. She figured all the hammering was going to make plenty of noise and would gain some attention. She was a decent shot, thank to Charlie training her through all this. She had tucked it into the back of her jeans and took it out and set it on the porch at her feet before she took hold of the wood. She glanced at Declan,"just in case, this is gonna make noise and gain us some attention eventually." She held the plank and kept watch towards the road.
Declan took the nails, putting the first one between his lips and the other one against the plank. He looked at the rifle but Sarah spoke up. "Ah, okay then" Declan said before beginning to hammer the nail into place. Despite his best efforts the hammering made a lot of noise and would attract growlers eventually. He finally hammered the first nail in. He took the other nail out. "Right, we're going to need to swap sides." He said as he started moving to the left of the plank. "If you see a growler warn me, otherwise i'll probably put a nail through my finger." He said with a slight laugh. He got the nail into place getting ready to hammer it into place.
Sarah was not watching Declan, she was making sure they were not caught by surprise. She switched him places and then glanced at him a bit confused,"just one nail on each end, will that be enough to hold it?" She raised a brow, was there a power bail gun, that was what she had grabbed the cord for. She looked down at their feet,"it was on the work bench,Max and Charlie had grabbed all the hand tools the other night. She realized she sounded crazy for a moment. " sorry,I was tracking on a train of thought, but I thought I grabbed the power nail gun. I don't see it.Did I leave it?"
"It should be enough but i'll go over everything after it's all done just to make sure." Declan said as he hammered the next nail in. He heard her talking and turned to look at her. "Oh, I thought you had lost it for a moment there." Declan said with a slight laugh. "Ummm, I can't see it" He said looking around. "You might've left it but we don't need it as far as I know. It might speed up the process though so if you think we need it then it's your call." Declan said as he reached over grabbing another plank. He stood on the stool. He positioned the plank with both hands for a moment, trying to find the best angle.
Sarah smiled at him,"yea, sorry about that,I am used to only being with Charlie. He isn't the most talkative." She chuckled and then reached out to help hold the board. She glanced around scanning the the front. So far so good. It would make it quicker, but for now she would humor him. "Let's get this window done and then we will see about getting the nailgun." Sarah stayed quiet while he hammered in the next nail, waiting patiently. She wanted more than anything to show that she could pull her weight and get jobs done. She wanted Charlie to be able to not feel that he had to look outfor her so much, that she could handle herself and take care of others too.
Declan nodded. "I get you. I was alone for the whole of this thing until now." He said as he finished with this board. He reached for another one. He brought it to his chest then stepped on the stool. "Okay, we'll get the nailgun once I hammer this one in." He said as he positioned the nail on the plank and placed it at an angle on the window. There was a small space in between all the planks that would allow sight and the ability to shoot from there. Declan hammered the first nail in and then the second. "Right, where would this nail gun be?" Declan said stepping off the stool. He grabbed his axe and looked out the window.
Sarah did her best to try to help hold the plank. She was relieved he didn't expect her to talk constantly. She glanced at him as she stepped back to survey their work, "Looks pretty good." She shook her head, "I saw it in the tool shed, work shop, I thought I grabbed it, that was what I got the power cord for.' She was upset with herself, 'I can go grab it, you can stay here , it was my mistake."
"It'll do for now." He says as he steps off the stool. "Don't worry, I'll go grab it. If you see any growlers you can call me if you need me. I won't be more then a few seconds anyway." He nodded at her as he started to navigate through the house out to the tool shed. He opened the door looking in, "where is it?" He started looking around seeing it, he grabbed it and turned smacking his head on the frame of the door. "Ouch.." He rubbed his head as he stepped out, closing the tool shed door. He started to walk back to Sarah.
Sarah nodded and let him go for the tool. She saw his head when he came back, 'What happened? You have a red mark across your forehead." She hurriedly moved over to him, "Are you cut any where, bleeding?" She was motioning for him to sit down in the sing so she could look at him, "Well, you found the nail gun, but I didn't mean for you to go and hurt yourself."
"I'm fine, just bumped my head on the door frame" He says laughing. "C'mon, let's finish up these windows." He says moving to the planks and throwing them onto his shoulder. He plugged the nail gun onto the power chord. He started on the next window. It made the work a lot faster. "Good job thinking of this" He said as he worked.
