Parnell listened to Beau promise not to act out, heard his testimony about not being like his brother. For the moment, Parnell would let him stand by those words. He lowered the rifle and let him walk into the clinic, shutting the door behind him. He was like a hawk, watching his every move, his eyes occasionally darting to the operating room in the back where Bryce and Maddie had vanished to. He didn't like it, and Beau was right. It wasn't easy, not by a long shot. Having them here was a tough pill to swallow, but for Maddie, he would down the entire bottle. Parnell didn't like the strange closeness that the boys shared with his sister, and he also didn't like the apparent uncertainty surrounding Jude and the Crowes.
Parnell and Jude had been best friends before all of this, and he was well-aware of the relationship between Jude and Bubba. Beau seemed to think that he would want to stick around with the Crowes rather than surviving with himself and his sister, and Parnell had to disagree. Jude was family, had been since he was young. Parnell knew of how close Jude was with Bubba, but if the current state of affairs was anything to go by, he had a sneaky suspicion that things were not as they appeared.
"I'm sure that Jude will want to come home." Parnell leaned against the wall, surveying the clinic. He didn't like the way it looked with the additional people. "He and your brother must not be as close as they were, if the attack on Jude is anything to go by. This is where his family is, he knows that. Or at least he will know that."
Truthfully, Parnell never knew if Jude was even alive. He had searched for him in New Orleans and came up empty. To find him alive now, here, a little ways up the road, was flooring. Parnell would get him back, that much was certain.
"No, we were only here recently. And only in New Orleans briefly." Parnell shook his head. "For the lot of this, we were held up with Jay in the police station." Parnell furrowed his brows when Beau said that they had looked for them in the first few months of the outbreak. "Why would you have done that?"
There were so many unknown factors, so many irregularities. As Parnell looked at Beau, tried to figure it out, he heard Avery and Maddie talking. It was brief and sharp, and he didn't fully catch it, but he caught the way that Maddie shut the door on her on the way out. He took a step back from Beau when Avery said that she wanted to talk upstairs, though his eyes returned to Beau when he said that he wouldn't make any moves. Parnell wasn't sure that he could trust him, but at the very least, Bryce was still injured and Brad was outside. By the time that they tried to organize any attack, the pair would be wise to it.
"Don't leave this spot," Parnell warned. He called out into the office, his words echoing in the small space. "Maddie, I'm just going to be upstairs for a minute. Yell if you need me."
"Okay!" She called back.
He let his eyes linger for a long moment before he ventured upstairs with Avery. He loomed by the top of the staircase, ready to go down at a moment's notice. He had a lot that he had to say to Avery, and more than that, a lot that he had to explain to her. But he could see it in her eyes, in her jaw, how angry she was. She needed to get whatever she had to say out first, otherwise she wouldn't even listen to what he had to say.
"Go ahead," Parnell said, and in comparison to her fury, his cool tones were calm and level. "Say what you need to say."
