(Recap: Hideki and Mitch have recently relocated to California after a string of groups. They endangered Mitch and at one point, he was captured for information that he didn't have and tortured mercilessly. Currently, Hideki is fretting over the wounds on his back, which appear to be infected or inflamed. He can't tell. All he knows is that he trusts no one, which is why it's problematic for him when Billie comes, looking for a place to stay. Hideki turns her away, but as she begins to get swarmed, Mitch pleads for him to save her.)
Hideki was relieved when the woman down below said that she would leave without giving them any trouble, not because he wasn't capable of handling her, but because he wanted to attend to Mitch's wounds. He had been keeping him on a strict regiment of time with his shirt on and off, and it was about time to disinfect the wounds with alcohol and put his shirt back on. But as he glanced over his shoulder and looked Mitch over, eyed his wounds, a new concern sprung to his mind.
What if this woman was part of a group? She said that she was alone, seemed helpless, but that could have all been a trap. If she came back with people they could endanger Mitch, and for a moment, he held the rifle in his hand with a purpose. For all they knew, she could be innocent, but what if she wasn't? Wouldn't it better to kill her before she came back and tried to kill Mitch? He turned back to the window with his rifle, undecided, but she said something that stole his attention. He had told her that he didn't have any food, water, or medicine to offer her, and rather than beg for any, she retorted that she had her own. Hideki crouched back by the window, rifle still in hand, and called out to her. "You have medicine?"
But the time for conversation would have to wait. The rattling of the gate, the yelling and crying, gave way to new noise. Growls, lots of them. Walkers shambled onto the scene, and Hideki watched as she tried to throw a brick at one. His brows furrowed. Did she not have any weapons? She cried for help, saying that they couldn't just let her die, but for Hideki, he saw it as a golden opportunity. What did walkers want with medicine? Nothing. He wouldn't even have to get his hands dirty. Let them eat her, then take her supplies. Simple.
But Mitch was too good, too sweet. He pleaded for Hideki to do something, echoing that they couldn't just let her die. Hideki looked back over his shoulder at him once more, bit the inside of his cheek. He didn't want to help her. Any ammo that was spared on this girl couldn't be used to protect him later. But Mitch was looking at him with those eyes, and Hideki always had a hard time saying no to them. He sighed and nodded, moving back to the window and firing at the immediate walkers. He spotted six of them, two close, four incoming. He'd have to move fast. He fired off two shots, dropping the walkers closest to her, and rose to his feet.
He moved across the room to Mitch with quick feet, and he dropped down and pulled his pistol out. He held it out to Mitch, his eyes just as serious as his words. "Mitch, if anyone walks through that door, you kill them. I don't care who it is. We don't know this girl, don't know if she has people. And I will not have you suffer any more than you already have. If anyone walks through that door without me, you'll shoot them where they stand. Promise me."
Hideki waited for the affirmation before he let the gun go, and he squeezed Mitch's shoulder. He rose to his feet and left the unit, running down the stairs and through the complex. He kept his gaze alert, despite already clearing the complex out when they started to squat there. Hideki was never too safe, too cautious. His feet slammed against the pavement as he rushed to the gate, where the girl was being swarmed by the remaining four. He made quick work of the chain, opening the gate only far enough to reach out and grab her by the arm. He yanked her inside the complex just in time, and as he slammed the gate shut behind him, there was no time to fix the chain. The quartet of the dead pressed themselves against it, tried to force it open.
"Not today," he growled, and he unsheathed his knife as he got close. He stabbed them through the bars, the growls slowly dissolving to nothing as they dropped like sacks before the gate. Hideki shook his head and spat on the ground, locking them in with the chain once more. He turned to the girl, the pair visible from the window of the apartment that Mitch was residing in, and held her at knife point. The rifle was still in his other hand, and as he stood there, he was sure he must have looked like a madman. "Hands up. I'm having a really rough morning. I suggest you don't make me cut you."
