David watched as his last of his students left the school. A few had stayed back for rides, waiting for parents to pick them or, or friends to it. "Remember to stay inside, lock the doors," He said calmly. David gathered his bag, putting it on his back.
He was the last person there, all the other teachers had left, he was the last person in the school. A sound came from the hall. Slowly David came out, heading to the locked door. From the window he could see two cars, his and the math teacher Mr. Weathers.
"funny, he should be gone by now," David said to himself. He moved to the door, hearing the sound again. It was like a growl, some one breaking glass. He went to reach for the door, turned it half way. His phone rang. His wife. Releasing the doorknob he stepped back and put it to his ear.
"yes. Yes I hesrd. You're stuck across town. Yes I'm just finishing up. I'll get them now. Yes. Be safe. Love you too," he said clicking the phone shut. Adding it to his pocket he made his way outside. Tossing his back in the hatch he climbed in and set off for the elementary school his kids were at.
The radio played reports of incidents all over the states. Riots in LA, boats going down off Hawaii. It was bad, Chaos everywhere. There was nothing they could do. People were attacking each other, violent behaviour, some sort of virus. High pain tolerance. One report mentioned a lady, getting hit by a car, coming back alive minutes later, with the behaviour of the other infected. No music played, just reports, school closings, and other pandemic news.
David pulled into the parking lot of the school. There was one car but his own in the lot. "Please be here. Please be here," he said to himself as he went inside. opening the doors he moved around and looking around.
"Sebastian! Paige," he called for his children. He came into the room where laughter could be heard. His daughter, her teacher and his son were all inside. "Thank god you're safe." He smiled. "Thank you for staying with them. I was closing up across town Janice is running late, stuck in traffic. Downtown was cut off, a protest or something."
He saw the cupcake, his son sighed. "Let's get you two home. Best mom home." He smiled at Vanessa, their teacher. "Listen I know this may see moutmof the blue. But I know you live near us. Radio was advising to stay together. Why don't you come home with us, stay the night. We have an air mattress, or a couch. It's safer, better in numbers." He smiled, "I insist you stay."
