The time had come for the Bear Lake Council to finally deliberate on the admission for the group her father had brought in. They had a rule that stated relatives of people who were already within the camp were to let in without hesitation in order to reunite families, so her dad and sister were in the clear. Still, given the day's events it did not look good for the rest of them. Word had gotten around about the infected kid, and that there was a scientist who wanted to do experiments on the undead. It had overclouded the fact that they brought a doctor with them as well, and the fact that her father brought in a lot of advanced weaponry. People still tended to see only the bad in it.
Ellen sat in her usual spot, next to Randall. The other Council members sat to their right; Bob Landry obviously didn't like the new arrivals one bit and sat in his ever nonchalant posture, doctor Harding's expression was deprived of all emotion and Ranji Chamanlal prided himself on being objective and neutral in all hearings.
Ellen looked at her father and sister, Anne-Marie gave her a smile in return. Ellen was already certain of their position within the camp. As for the rest of them; so far it seemed to her the only one worth keeping was their doctor, Andrei. It wasn't her intention to bear ill will to some of her father's group but what did they expected her to do? She had a responsibility to the people in this camp after all. She knew the Lex guy was trouble however and had to make sure the rest of the Council would see him and the pirate as isolated cases. The pirate guy didn't seem so bad after he had dropped his act towards her, but she knew the Lex guy was going to be trouble. Especially if what that ruthless Remy chick said was true.
Ranji Chamanlal then started the meeting and things got on the way.
"This Council now calls this meeting opened." Chamanlal said. "Presiding are Bob Landry, agricultural. Jane Harding, medical. Ellen McAllister, security and scouting. Randall Slade, provisions and supplies. And myself, Ranji Chamanlal, engineering and mechanics."
In a normal Council meeting, Ellen would mimic soundlessly what Chamanlal said as it was the same thing over and over again. But this was a special occasion and she knew she had to behave for this meeting.
"This Council has gathered to deliberate on the admission of some new arrivals today." Chamanlal continued. "Council member Ellen, it has come to our attention that two of your direct family members are among them. Is this true?"
"Yes." Ellen answered. "My father Logan McAllister and my sister Anne-Marie McAllister. I would like to call on the family reunion rule for them. Here is a family photo to prove that we're related."
Ellen shoved the family picture she kept with her toward Chamanlal. After inspecting it himself he passed it on to Landry and Harding, who gave him a nod. Randall gave his permission as well. Ellen blinked with one eye at Randall.
"Very well, I hereby officially declare the named Logan McAllister and Anne-Marie McAllister as a part of this community." Chamanlal said. "They now have permission to sleep in the living quarters and be put to work in a job that befits them."
Chamanlal shoved the family photo back to Ellen. She smiled at her father and sister. Even though it was a sure thing, she still felt a sense of relief.
"Would the next candidate please step forward?" Chamanlal asked.
