The Dodge Charger roared down the road as the last of her gas was about to be spent. Dannie was in a strange, cold place, but she wasn't worried about it. The snow meant the walkers were nearly frozen in place and with the amount of ammo she had, she felt pretty confident she could take out one or two. She hadn't seen anything for miles though as she closed in towards a place called Bear Lake. The old welcoming sign was worn and had rust on it from lack of care, but at least she knew where she was. She assumed it was one of those little mountain/tourist towns that was busier in the spring and summer and sleepy in the fall and winter...or at least once was.
She made a hard right down one of the lonely roads that looked more like a driveway as she wound around some outcroppings of young, barren spruce trees, heading right for a log cabin that looked like it was built a hundred years ago. She knew better though. Things that were new were made to look old to attract tourists from around the country and this was no exception. At the edge of the lake, she parked and sighed. The little light indicator came on telling her she needed to refuel. At least she got this far and could get to know her surroundings a little better before heading off to find an abandoned gas station she could ciphon from.
She got out of the car, popped the trunk and decided to grab her handgun instead of one of the rifles. If she was going inside, that work far better in her favor then a long range rifle. Cramped quarters were no good for such dire situations and she wasn't about to let any dead things win. With a few quick breaths and techniques she learned in the academy, she waited at the front door and gently turned the knob to see what was inside. Her gun was drawn and she held up her maglight to see if anyone or anything would come at her. The only thing she could see was the stream of sunlight through the little windows.
"Come out with your hands up! I'm a law enforcement officer!"
If they were alive, she hoped they would respond back. If they were dead, she hoped they would come and get her. The sooner she could clear the house, the quicker she could map out a plan.
