The door opened and a young fresh face greeted her, behind her stood a man looking grim. Hunter took a step forward, his neck fur raised, growling menacingly at the girl.
'Hush, Hunter,' she said, toeing her dog. He quietened down, but a low growl still sounded. She wouldn't want them shooting her dog, or her too.
Winter kicked her weapons inside as directed and allowed another girl to pat her down. The first thing she noticed were the two men and the amount of children in this group. She was sure there would be more hiding in and around the hanger. Probably the children's mothers. They were also wearing pajamas, which she would have found amusing if not for the guns trained on her.
'I'm alone and I've never seen any of you before,' she said as she took a seat, hands still up in the air. Her backpack was still on her, so she sat on the edge of the chair. Hunter stood beside her, his black and white fur bristling against her. 'Look I'm not here for trouble. I can go. I thought this place was empty. Let me have my weapons and I'll leave you be.'

This was the day from Hell for these girls, and it refused to end. After more than a year of relative peace and tranquility, unheard of these days, reality came crashing back hard in a single day. Being driven out bed and their safe haven for the past year at dawn was more than enough for a month. Then they lost one of their own during their escape, that would be enough trauma to deal with for a year, but also losing contact with the Thorne brothers, adopted uncles multiplied it all. Now an unnerving number of strangers happening upon what they thought would be their refuge for the night was beginning to take its toll on Dakota.
Though Winter had done exactly as the girls had asked, the fact she was the third in a line of strangers to surprise them at the end of such a horrible day brought Dakota's rifle up to her shoulder to aim. Though her finger was never over the trigger and she never cocked the lever action.
The 15 year old stopped well short of giving into that rash and momentary urge, and she dropped her rifle's aim back down toward the ground as she shouted in frustrated rage and grief to the roof. ”RAaaah! What the fuck else can go wrong today?!? I swear, if it turns out had something to do with the people who killed Mikey this morning and ran us out of our cabin... I... I..”
Dakota turned and walked away knocking a few tools off a nearby bench.. Hanging her head, she retreated to the office, glancing to either side at Dallas and the Padre, suddenly as embarrassed as she was just overwhelmed. To lose it like that in front of people Anthony knew or called family made it worse somehow. Her big hazel eyes filling with tears she could no longer hold back, she shook her head. ”I'm.. I'm sorry, Clem... can you?”
The nearly 14 year old, but slightly taller girl put a hand on Dakota's shoulder, motioning the younger of the three older girls over to take charge of the toddlers. Maria trotted over and Clementine advanced toward Winter, her own pistol aimed at the woman and her dog. Clem's own dark eyes were wet with tears too. Dakota did pull herself together enough to back up Clem with rifle slowly back at the ready before Clem began speaking.
Clem held up a hand and took a moment to breath before lowering the aim of her weapon toward the floor,
Clementine:”I have to apologize. It's.. just been a really..really long day. Maybe the only good thing happening today.. is meeting a couple of friends of our oldest friends.. Some raiders hit our cabin at dawn this morning..splitting us from Wyatt and Jesse.. like uncles to us and they killed our little brother, Mikey while we were running... so this three strangers in one night is..a lot. Still can't believe Anthony knew two of you.. So please.. if you know of anyone else out there waiting for us.. Just..tell us.”

Thomas glanced at the new woman. He'd been traveling on his own for so long. To suddenly run into so many newcomers...it was odd, to say the least. For the moment, Thomas had forgotten entirely what Dallas had told him about the fate of his brother--and the voice he'd heard. Had that been a dream? It wasn't important right now.
The woman came in with a dog--something Thomas hadn't seen in a while--and sat at the edge of a chair. She offered to simply go if she was allowed to keep her life. Thomas looked to Dallas and then to the girls. In a weird way, with every newcomer, every person who wasn't the NEWEST face felt like their own "group" already. As if Thomas, the kids, and Dallas were already a unit. "Well--nobody needs to die," he began. "We don't want that, and you don't want that."
Thomas paused for a moment. "What's your name?" Thomas' gaze shifted to the dog. "And him? Hunter--is that what I heard?" Thomas looked to Dallas, the other adult. "She doesn't seem a threat. Even with the dog."

Winter sat on the chair, feeling very tense. The girls kept pointing guns at her. Rather than feeling hostile, however, she felt somewhat sorry for the children. What a way to spend childhood. They would not have had the years of life experience behind them to lean on in these troubled times. What would children of this new world grow up to be? At least they had their fathers with them. This thought made Winter pause - why were the girls so confrontational when the adults were here? Shouldn't that be the two men's jobs?
She flinched as a younger girl stuck a gun in her face, but relaxed a little when she brought it back down to the ground and explained their story. The other girl seemed to be having a melt down. Winter concluded that these children were highly unstable. It was probably the first girl who had pulled the trigger when Winter knocked on the door moments earlier. Trigger friendly.
The man spoke now. 'I'm Winter,' she said. Winter gestured to the border collie mix, 'He's Hunter. I'm unarmed and have no intention of harming you people. Can you tell your daughters to back off? I was travelling alone, didn't see nobody outside.'
She could hear the sounds of babies close by. Hunter pricked his ears up at the noise as well. He had stopped growling now, but Winter could tell that he was still coiled up and ready to pounce. 'Shh, it's ok Hunter,' she whispered to her dog. Hunter wagged his tail once, but remained upright and alert.

(Got the green light to post here, so, hey. Here's a post! Sorry about the length and general meander-y nature of it, I couldn't think of a decent way to tie it up quickly.)
Lost.
Alone.
Haley checked her compass and her map, trying to retrace her steps, the paper making a soft crumpling sound as she laid it down on the flattest surface she could find, which in this case was the bonnet of a long abandoned, decaying and burnt out van. Flakes of rust and faded paint that was likely once white in colour yet after the fire and being left out in the elements likely as long as there had been walkers it was hard to tell.
She took a deep breath, a sigh escaping from lips as she attempted to calm herself down. She could still feel her heart pounding in her chest and her hands shaking as she attempted to trace the line following whatever landmarks she could. Honestly though, it wasn't helping as much as she would have liked. She had gotten turned around so many times and despite being so much closer to home than Texas this still wasn't exactly familiar ground.
All she could tell was that she was near an airport. Open terrain, but, the control tower would surely serve as a decent vantage point. Problem was, the terrain getting there was open. Just fields and light shrubbery blowing in the dry winds with very minimal cover or concealment. The girl quickly gave her weapon over, almost more out of instinct than any purposeful thought. The Famas had certainly served her well even if she could barely keep the recoil under control at times.
This whole situation reminded her of when she first ran into Pepper. Walking through the fields of California with no friends in sight, nothing but herself and her thoughts. So much had happened this year. The cabin, the castle, the scouts, Texas, friends coming and going as the world seemed to just throw her from great highs to grim lows day by day.
She shook her head, as if trying to shake those very thoughts out of her mind as she shouldered the rifle. Checking left, then right before slowly and carefully advancing, keeping behind any vegetation she could utilise for concealment. She walked ahead across a road, then to a cluster of buildings. Clearing them room by room revealed very little. It was like almost everything else now. Picked clean, laid barren and wasting away. "At least there ain't no walkers. Bam... where the hell did you go?" she mused to herself, mumbling the words to herself under her breath as she approached the airport itself. "Fuck, I'd even be happy to see Knox right no-"
CRAK! CRAK!
Haley nearly jumped out of her skin, diving for cover behind the broken down fuselage of a torn up twin engined Cessna. Those were pistol shots, not like ones she had heard before off in the distance, but, clearly less than a mile away. Or more specifically, inside the airport itself!
Silence.
Haley again steadied herself. That shot certainly came from one of the larger hangars that she hadn't had a poke around inside yet. If there was anyone in there, they weren't shooting at her. This could either mean there were actually walkers in the area, or, worse, bandits had just shot someone. Either way, they hadn't noticed her yet. If she just stayed silent using the cover of darkness to mask her presence, she could surely slip away unnoticed.
Walker! It must have been attracted by the gunshots! The decaying shambling remnants of humanity stumbled forward, one crawling from another wrecked aircraft, another moving in from the darkness, and yet another a good deal further out visible only due to a well placed beam of moonlight breaking through the cloud layer, the stench almost causing the girl to gag as she raised up her rifle, bracing against the recoil.
BLAM! BLAMBLAM!
"Fuck..." Those shots were a dinner bell and Haley knew it. She couldn't even be sure if she hit that last one and the Famas was not a quiet weapon and although she had dispatched these two walkers for sure, god knows how many more there were. There could be hundreds! Thousands! She kept the rifle shouldered, scanning with the acog scope left and right. Everything was still again. Silent. Perhaps that's all there was in this airport? Just two stragglers? And what of those shots? Maybe that *was* one of the scout teams? They might have just been clearing out one of the buildings.
She decided to take the risk, hunkering herself down behind as much cover as she could find, which happened to be behind an overturned bus' engine block in what she hoped was at just the right arc to protect her from any incoming gunfire if her hunch proved itself wrong.
"Hello? Bam? Johnny? You guys in there?"
She kept her voice down, projecting it just enough to make herself heard by someone behind the nearby hangar's thin walls. They'd surely be listening after her shots, at least, that was her hope.

Clementine seemed to take Thomas words to heart, though she didn't not lower her weapon completely, until she was sure herself that Winter and her canine friend weren't the bandit threat they feared.
She was as tired and hungry as her sisters and baby brother, the weight of a long and horrible day showing on even her face. Clem wiped her dark eyes dry on the back of one hand freed from her weapon now allowed to hang down at her side. ”They aren't family. Not yet. We take care of ourselves. I c-”
Whatever Clem meant to say next was lost at the next couple gunshots, this time from outside. She quickly gripped her handgun back at the ready. Dakota was shaken back into fight or flight adrenaline mode, her rifle turned toward the door.
Clem listened carefully for any footsteps. She didn't hear any, but she did hear a young voice seep through the hangar walls. The hangar walls muffled the voice enough to accurately gauge what age, but it called out for unfamiliar names. The unfamiliar names plus experience with cultists back in Denver were more than enough for Clem to know even anyone close to her own age couldn't be trusted. What was up with today? This voice was different though. It openly admitted to have having a number of friends... friends Clem did not know.
She really wished there was a back way out of the hangar. It was really feeling like pushing luck to keep using the same bluff... but some variation of it was they're main fall back. It was usually backed up by Dakota playing sniper. When it was working, Kota's decent sharpshooting and a well-placed warning shot could be used to sell the idea there might be others hidden and ready to fire. Right now, they had have to rely once more on tone of voice.
”We have your friends, and if they know what's good for them. They won't say a word. If you know what's good for them you and any of your other friends sh-”
The Clear Lake area and south on down to parts of Napa and Sonoma Counties were always one of of the more geologically active areas in the Greater Bay Area. Back when there was such a thing as seismographs, it was unusual for 4 or 5...sometimes 10 earthquakes to be recorded everyday. Most of them falling around 1.5 to 3.6 .sometimes 4.something were too small to be felt unless you were right on top of them when they occurred. Such things do not go away just because no one is measuring them anymore.
Only this time it was a notable doozy, interrupting Clementine mid-bluff. If there were any active seismographs still around, it might've registered a moderate 5.4. It's length was also extraordinary, creating a rolling rumble under everyone's feet for a full 43 seconds. No buildings collapsed nor suffered major structural damage, but anything that as not extra heavy or bolted down began to shift and fall off shelves, walls and windows rattled, and light fixtures shook and swayed, threatening to wrench themselves down from the ceiling.
